84. Sports -- A Sad Epilogue To A Great Story

A Sad Epilogue to a Great Story By Sean P. Flynn
Hoya Staff Writer The gift was a direct reference to one of Thompson’s most famous moments, the Feb. 27, 1985, "Sweater Incident," when Thompson stunned a Madison Square Garden crowd by wearing a vintage Carnesecca sweater. "I didn’t mind him upstaging me," Carnesecca says of the game, "but he had to beat me, too. He took the crowd out of the game and he took us out, too." Thompson’s showmanship helped the No. 2 Hoyas easily avenge an earlier loss to the No. 1 Redmen, as the Hoyas won 85-69. Georgetown would beat St. John’s two weeks later in the Big East and three weeks after that would defeat the Redmen in the NCAA semifinal. In its heyday, the arrogance of the Georgetown basketball program was endearing to Hoya fans. From Thompson’s outspokenness on controversial public issues to the wearing of gray uniforms at home and the accusations of "Basket-brawl," being a fan of the team that everyone loved to hate was fun. Saturday’s game against Syracuse was maybe the most intense home game since the Iverson era. The student section was as large as it has been in three years, the crowd was loud and one of Thompson’s greatest legacies — the Syracuse-Georgetown rivalry — was alive and kicking as if Rony Seikaly and Sherman Douglas were still battling Alonzo Mourning and Dikembe Mutumbo for East Coast bragging rights. And it seems that for the first time in a long time, the Hoyas’ Big East meetings are not the sloppy, mistake-plagued games of recent years, but instead 40-minute, down-to-the-wire wars, where big men dominate as much as guards and the word "offense" peacefully coexists with "defense."

Chicago Cubs announcer Harry Caray, who took millions of fans out to the ball game on radio and television, died yesterday four days after collapsing at a Valentine's Day dinner. He was believed to be 77. Caray was hospitalized Saturday after falling ill at a nightclub-restaurant while with his wife, Dutchie. He died at 4:10 p.m. at Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, Calif. A broadcaster since 1941, Caray was immediately recognizable for his thick, oversized glasses and raspy, sing-along rendition of "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" over the public address system during the seventh-inning stretch. Caray was a broadcaster for the St. Louis Cardinals for 25 years and for the Chicago White Sox for 11 years before moving across town to Wrigley Field in 1982. ... After months of tough talk, Bernie Williams decided not to go through with his salary arbitration hearing, agreeing yesterday to an $8.25 million, one-year contract with the New York Yankees. Williams and the Yankees settled at the midpoint of the figures the sides had submitted. Williams had asked for $9 million, which would have been the largest one-year contract ever. New York had offered $7.5 million, a raise of $2.2 million. ... Right-hander Jason Schmidt has signed a three-year deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates worth $4.5 million, half of the team's total payroll at the start of last season. Schmidt spent his first full season in the major leagues last year, going 10-9 with a 4.60 ERA in 32 starts for the Pirates. ... Catcher

    Welcome Back Kotter?

From yesterday’s elation to today’s humiliation. In classic Magic fashion, they have gone one step forward and then immediately two steps back.
Brian Hill? Brian Hill?! That’s who the Magic handpicked to get them back to the promised land?
I’ve read the message boards talking about how this hiring is going to “bring the fans back” to the arena. Why? Because they were there back when he was coaching the Magic before? You know who else was there? Shaquille O’Neal, a healthy Penny Hardaway and Horace Grant in his prime. That’s why the fans were there. Because the Magic were winning. Not because they liked the coach.
You know what I remember about Hill? Not fouling at the end of Game 1 of the NBA Finals with the Magic up by 3. Or how about not winning a championship in three seasons with O’Neal and Hardaway together.
Do Magic fans even realize the one year he did lead Orlando to the Finals was the season Michael Jordan came back from retirement and wasn’t in game shape? Or that he was swept out of the playoffs three seasons in a row?
Brian Hill was the product of Shaquille O’Neal. Plain and simple.
