MIAMI HEAT HISTORY
Miami Heat, professional basketball team and one of seven teams in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Heat play in AmericanAirlines Arena in Miami, Florida, and wear jerseys of red, gold, and white. The Heat entered the NBA in 1988 when the league granted an expansion team franchise to a group of investors that included Ted Arison, Lewis Schaffel, and former Philadelphia 76ers star Billy Cunningham. The franchise used its 1988 draft picks to select center Rony Seikaly, guard Kevin Edwards, and forward Grant Long. The Heat lost the first 17 games of its 1988-89 debut season, setting an NBA record for the most losses to begin a season. Finishing the year with a 15-67 win-loss record, Miami used its poor finish to its advantage, selecting forward Glen Rice and guard Sherman Douglas in the 1989 NBA draft. The club’s record slowly improved over the next few years. During the 1991-92 season the team registered a 38-44 record, qualifying for its first playoff appearance. The inexperienced Heat, however, were defeated by the Chicago Bulls in the first round in three straight games.
The Heat returned to the playoffs in 1993-94 by posting a 42-40 win-loss record, the team’s first winning season. Rice led the team in offense, scoring 21.1 points per game. In the playoffs Miami lost to the Atlanta Hawks in the first round, three games to two.

I. Team Report
The Jazz are coming off their best regular season in the history of the organization. Utah had the best overall record in the NBA this season which was highlighted by a season sweep of Chicago. After a bump in the road against the Rockets, Utah steam rolled the Spurs and Lakers. If ever there were a time that Utah could beat Chicago it was this season. The Bulls were coming off a tough series against Indiana in which they looked vulnerable. The Jazz were well rested, playing well, and had home court advantage. At the present moment Chicago has a commanding 3 games to 1 lead in the series. The Bulls defense has smothered the Jazz. It looks as if Utah will have to re-group and re-tool in the off season and take another run at the title next year.

History
College basketball All-America teams weren't named until 1929, when both College Humor Magazine and the Christy Walsh Syndicate began selecting teams. The first truly authoritative selections were made by the Converse Yearbook , beginning in 1932 and continuing through 1948. Other major selectors didn't get involved in naming basketball All-Americans until after World War II: Associated Press in 1948, the National Association of Basketball Coaches and United Press in 1949, and International News Service in 1950. However, the Helms Athletic Foundation (now the Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles) chose basketball All-Americans retroactively, beginning in 1920. The Helms panel named ten players for each year, but didn't categorize them as first team or second team. Several of the other major selectors have chosen second- and third-team All-Americans from time to time, though not with any great consistency. The lists below incorporate the Helms All-American teams from 1920 through 1932. From that point on, players selected by other sources are also included.

Ode to an NCAA basketball champion
BY CHRISTOPHER YOUNG
WHEN I MOVED TO the area in 1984, one my main reasons for coming here was that Boston seemed to be such a great sports town. In upstate New York, where I grew up, sports fans did not really have a pro team to call their own, since my hometown was nestled equidistant between the two Empire State "metropolises," New York and Buffalo. Central New Yorkers were either Yankees fans or Mets fans; Jets fans, Giants fans, or Bills fans; Rangers fans, Islanders fans, or Sabres fans; and Knicks fans or Nets fans. And as this transplanted New Yorker became accustomed to the fanaticism that is the New England sports aficionado, I slowly lost my allegiances to the New York teams that I grew up loving so much — in my case, the Mets, Rangers, and Knicks (I was an LA Rams fan in football; don’t ask me why). Yet my devotion to one particular New York–based team never wavered. It survived and even thrived despite endless winters of disappointment and heartbreak. The Mets won the World Series in 1986, and I didn’t care. The Rangers won their first Stanley Cup in 54 years in 1994, and it hardly mattered a whit. Even the Rams won a Super Bowl in 1999, and it barely registered, because my attentions became focused on the New England teams and the one holdover from my youth: Syracuse University. I didn’t go to Syracuse, but I doubt my fidelity to its sports teams would have been any less rabid if I'd attended the upstate New York school. For Central New Yorkers, Syracuse has always been pretty much the only game in town. No other pantheon of higher learning north of the Big Apple has such a national standing in the primary college sports, and therefore Syracuse University can glean its support from all corners of the state. While universities like Cornell, Colgate, and RPI offer high-profile Division I hockey programs, only Syracuse plays a top-level national schedule in such marquee sports as football, basketball, and lacrosse.

Marquee post matchups a thing of the past in SU-GU rivalry
By Chris Carlson Published: Monday, February 3, 2003 Patrick Ewing used to battle Rony Seikaly. Alonzo Mourning met up with Derrick Coleman. The Syracuse-Georgetown basketball rivalry once brimmed with premier post matchups.
Despite a horrendous start this season, McNeil and Forth combined for 18 points Wednesday at Rutgers, their best Big East performance. McNeil also totaled eight rebounds and scored the game-winning basket Saturday against Pittsburgh.
Fine developed Dan Schayes, once an unheralded post player, into an NBA draft pick. He turned Seikaly from a Greek giant who had never played organized basketball into an All-Big East center. And he changed Etan Thomas from an awkward Oklahoman into a shot-blocking wonder.
A smile or sarcastic remark occasionally escapes Fine, but neither delays his courtside plodding. While Hopkins and fellow assistant Troy Weaver tackle, slap-box and hug players, Fine is all business.
But when Forth, McNeil and freshman Matt Gorman nail each other with the pads, they do about as much damage as a pillow fight.
