Malik - the Explorer Malik in stalking mode
Malik was named in a "Name the Pups" contest when they first arrived at the Center. The name was submitted in memory of Malik Sealy, a star basketball player for the Minnesota Timberwolves NBA team. Due to his independent personality and curiosity, Malik is often described as an explorer. He can be distinguished from his white-coated brother by the raised cowlick between his eyes and his brightly colored coat. Malik is more dominant than his brother Shadow and currently holds a higher ranking position between the pair, although Shadow looks for any opportunity to get the best of his brother. Adapted to their northern climate, arctic wolves have rounder ears, shorter legs, and shorter muzzles and more heavily furred feet than their southern relatives do. In April of 2001, Malik underwent a full medical exam and weighed in at 86.5 pounds and continues to be a strong, healthy young wolf.

OECS Sports Calendar Packed for Remainder of 1999
The Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Sports Desk is anything but winding down; in fact, the bulk of the OECS sports calendar is still to be executed in the coming months. Among the upcoming activities are the sub-region's Championships in volleyball, boxing, squash and swimming. Three events are scheduled for St. Lucia.
Michael Olliviere, OECS Sports Coordinator, has held a number of meetings with the national governing bodies for boxing and swimming in St. Lucia. The OECS Boxing Championships will be held in late November, while the Swimming Championships are slated for December, at the Rodney Heights Aquatic Centre - currently under construction. Meanwhile, local squash officials indicate that everything is being put in place for the Championships in November. The OECS team to the recent Caribbean tournament suffered a setback when St. Vincent and the Grenadines pulled out unexpectedly, but all squash-playing territories have said that they will attend the Championships.

From being involved with the union I can tell you that there are programs in every professional sport. There is career counseling, drug intervention, second career programs. The question is are players going to take advantage of the programs? That's one problem I found with the union, they had all of these programs and players never participated. Once you make it to the professional level you're making your own money, you have your own following and sometimes guys don't focus on that. Norm Nixon. Career NBA Statistics. 12,065 points and 6,386 assists . I think the way you get guys to focus is if the people around the players would encourage players to continue to educate themselves. The bigger point about, whether the leagues are going to prepare you for school, no one is going to prepare you but yourself. We are handicapped at the university level. A lot of guys come into professional ball without having graduated. A lot of football players quit school in December to prepare for the NFL combines. So it's impossible for them to continue in school and prepare for the draft. So the key is education.

Duncan Signs
Basketball Digest , Nov, 2000 by Irwin Soonachan By re-upping with the Spurs, Tim Duncan got his cake. Now he and the Spurs are going to have to bake up quite a season to challenge Shaq for NBA supremacy THE MIDWEST DIVISION MAY be the most exciting and unstable in all of basketball. From top to bottom, this division is loaded with talent, and it's loaded with almost as many question marks. The San Antonio Spurs are the only team in the division with a real chance to knock off the Lakers, but their superstar, Tim Duncan, is coming off major surgery and the team's veteran core, led by David Robinson and Avery Johnson, is aging.

The franchise's first owner was Paul Snyder, who brought in NBA great Dolph Schayes to coach the Braves in their inaugural season. The team fielded the usual motley expansion crew. The starters included 6-8 center Bob "Horse" Kauffman, who had averaged 4.3 points the previous season with the Chicago Bulls; 6-4 forward Don May, who had been good for 2.6 points per game for the 1969-70 New York Knickerbockers; guard Eldo "Dick" Garrett, who brought a scoring average of 11.6 points per game from the Los Angeles Lakers; Emmette Bryant, who had scored 7.8 points per game with the Boston Celtics; and rookie John Hummer, a 6-9 forward out of Princeton. The first-year Braves achieved typical expansion-team results, finishing the 1970-71 campaign with a 22-60 record and in last place in the Atlantic Division. Despite the poor showing, Buffalo was not the worst team in the league-fellow expansion club Cleveland spared the Braves that embarrassment by losing 15 in a row to start the season and posting a 15-67 record overall.

Tournaments Cardroom Directory ... Poker Live Tournament Info: Daily Results New Schedules Last Month This Month ... Next Month Death in the Families By Mike Paulle Poker writers are intentionally upbeat. There is enough bad karma out there; we don't usually have to dwell on the dark side. Our focus is helping players rise above all the negativity that the bad beats and bad apples bring. Occasionally, however, something happens in the 'real world' that gives one pause. Each of us has two families. As poker players we've added a new family, the people we play with regularly. Then there is the family that includes the friends and relatives we have outside of poker. Death touched both my families recently and I think it's worth talking about. In poker, death took someone I knew well for his tournament play. A popular Southern California player, Brandon King, is a reported suicide. Death is usually tragic, but suicide is especially appalling. Brandon suffered a stoke last year and was crippled by it. This powerful young man had to walk with a leg-brace and cane. My conjecture is that the worst part for Brandon, however, wasn't the physical damage. I think Brandon felt he lost some of his mental acuity from the stroke. That would be very tough for someone like Brandon to take. Brandon's loss was compounded this week by a death in my other family, the one outside of poker. And it made me think about life.

Men's basketball notes
Two prized UCLA recruits showed off their offensive prowess and put an exclamation mark on the belief that the Bruins got the best recruiting class in the nation. In the IntenseCity Summer Classic, an exhibition basketball game held June 29 at Ocean View High School in Huntington Beach, Baron Davis and Schea Cotton had a playground party showing that they belong to the Bruins' high-powered offense. At the game, graduating seniors from L.A. County high schools matched up against graduating seniors from Orange County. Overall, L.A. County won, 124-112, but both Bruins equally made their presence felt. Davis, out of Crossroads High School in Santa Monica, was in fine form, scoring 19 points and racking up six rebounds and six assists. He earned the game's MVP award and won the slam dunk contest, a feat he had performed earlier in the school year at the much-hyped McDonald's All-Star game. Davis signed with the Bruins in May, and is expected to fill graduate Cameron Dollar's spot at point guard. Cotton was also masterful, doing what he does best - scoring off of the dribble. He had a team-high 25 points, showing his prowess at the small forward/shooting guard position. Cotton also signed with the Bruins in May, but his eligibility was contingent on an SAT score above 800. He recently passed the test with a score of 920, sealing his future at UCLA.

http://scholar.lib.vt.edu/VA-news/VA-Pilot/issues/1996/vp960603/06010045.htm
``EDDIE'': CORNBALL, NOT BASKETBALL
IS A GIRL named Eddie any kin to a boy named Sue? Actually Eddie is embodied by a comedian named Whoopi. Madame Whoop (as her friend Robin Williams calls her) has to bear the comic possibilities in ``Eddie'' virtually alone. In spite of this cliched sports plot, Whoopi Goldberg's ironic and sassy presence does much to make the film palatable. She plays Edwina, the world's loudest and most avid New York Knicks fan. She's the kind of fan who talks back to television sets, screaming things like ``Why don't you listen to me?'' to the players. In a freak free-throw competition she becomes the coach of her idols. They've lost 19 games in a row but Whoop, spurred by a Mary Worth kind of busybody style, talks them into the championship game. When they get too egotistical, she pulls her trump card - she telephones their mamas and rats on them. It's more cornball than basketball, leading up to that final shot that is so predictable you can almost hear the ``whoosh'' while you're reading this. ``Eddie,'' which is not to be confused with ``Ed,'' the baseball-chimpanzee movie, proves that we don't really need another basketball movie right now. Even at that, Whoopi's personality makes it better than either ``Celtic Pride'' (in which fans were pictured as psychotic kidnappers) or ``Sunset Park'' (in which Rhea Perlman had the identical role of an unlikely hoop coach).

The Bored The Bored Dumb The Sports PDA View Full Version : Paul Hornung Scroda 03-31-2004, 04:51 PM Ex-Irish great says school can't compete
Former Notre Dame great Paul Hornung may have landed in some hot water when discussing how the Irish can improve their football fortunes.
Hornung with his 1956 Heisman Trophy.
Hornung told Detroit's AM-1270 The Sports Station (an ESPN radio affiliate) on Tuesday that Notre Dame must ease up on its academic restrictions because "We gotta get the black athlete," he said. "We must get the black athlete if we're going to compete."
Hornung said that Notre Dame's schedule factors into his opinion.
"You can't play that type of schedule," Hornung said. "We're playing eight bowl teams next year ... and it's always year in and year out ... one of the toughest schedules.
"You can't play a schedule like that unless you have the black athlete today. You just can't do it, and it's very, very tough, still, to get into Notre Dame. They just don't understand it, yet they want to win."
Hornung, who is part of the Westwood One Radio team that broadcasts Notre Dame games, has previously criticized the school, saying its academic requirements have hurt the athletic department.
