Gaze, leads Aussies; France eliminates Canada
Click here for more on this story Latest: Thursday September 28, 2000 08:07 AM AP SYDNEY, Australia (AP) Andrew Gaze is making his fifth Olympics his best. Gaze scored 13 of Australia's last 15 points Thursday to lead the host country into the semifinals of the men's basketball tournament with a 65-62 victory over Italy. The 35-year-old guard is the second-leading scorer in Olympic history to Oscar Schmidt of Brazil. None of the 757 points have been any bigger than the ones down the stretch against Italy, as Australia's hopes for a gold medal stayed alive despite losing a 10-point lead midway through the second half. "We still have a couple more to go but we're really where we want to be right now," said Gaze, who had 27 points on 7-for-10 shooting, including 4 for 5 from 3-point range. The last two of those 3-pointers started his game closing run to keep Australia either in front or within a basket. His three-point play when he scored on a flip shot down low brought Australia within 60-59 with 2:09 left. He made two free throws with 1:38 left to make it 62-61.

But the Boomers and the Opals will have to be at their peak to position themselves so near the top of their respective competitions. With the groupings for Atlanta now finalised, Australia's men's team has world powers Yugoslavia and Greece in their side of the draw and the USA, Lithuania and Croatia in the other half. In the women's section Australia is grouped with other medal contenders - USA, Ukraine and Cuba. Brazil, China and Russia are the strongest teams in the other group.

OLYMPIC HISTORY From 1936 until 1972, basketball was about who could beat the United States - and no one did, in seven attempts. Then came the famous game between the US and the Soviet Union and the case of a British official, a US protest and a vault load of medals that some say still remain in a Munich bank to this day. The Soviet Union beat the US again in 1988 in the semi-finals before professionals were allowed in to the Games and the dream teams arrived to claim back supremacy for the US just as the Soviet Union faded into history. The stars of the National Basketball Association, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, were professionals among amateurs. In 1992 they were clearly taking sweets from the mouths of babes. For all their worth, however, the dream teams do not hold the title of most prolific Olympic scorer. That honour goes to Oscar Schmidt, of Brazil, who in 38 games in five Olympic Games has scored 1,093 points, an average of 28.8 points a game.

Basketball Definition and History
Basketball is a ball sport in which two teams of five players each try to score points by throwing a ball through a hoop. Basketball is highly suited to viewing by spectators, as it is primarily an indoor sport, played in a relatively small playing area, or "court," with only ten players, and using a large ball which is easy to follow. Additionally, the lack of protective gear makes it easy to see the reactions of the players. It is one of the most popular sports in the United States, and is also popular in other parts of the world, including South America, Europe, Asia, and the former Soviet Union.
Early History of Basketball
Interestingly, while the YMCAs were responsible for developing and initially spreading the game, within a decade they were discouraging the new sport, as rough play and rowdy crowds seemed to detract from what they saw as their primary mission. Other amateur sports clubs, colleges, and eventually professional clubs quickly filled the void. In the years before World War I, the Amateur Athletic Union and the Intercollegiate Athletic Association (forerunner of the NCAA) vied for control over the rules of the game. Basketball was originally played with a soccer (or foot-) ball. When special balls were made for the game they were initially a "natural" brown. It was only in the late 1950s that Tony Hinkle - looking for a ball that would be more easily noticed by players and spectators alike - introduced the orange ball now in common use.

Center goes 14-for-16, scores 37, Spain finishes disappointing 7th
ATHENS, Greece - Pau Gasol was 14-for-16 from the field and scored 37 points to lead Spain to a 92-76 victory over China and seventh place in the men's basketball tournament. The finish was a disappointing end for Spain (6-1), which finished preliminary play unbeaten only to lose 102-94 to the United States in the quarterfinals. This was Spain's best finish since taking eighth in 1988. Its only medal in 10 Olympic appearances was the silver in 1984. Gasol, who had seven rebounds, finished two points off the top scoring effort of the tournament - by Yao Ming of China against New Zealand. It was the sixth game of 30 or more points in the tournament. The Olympic record is 55 points by Oscar Schmidt of Brazil against Spain in 1988. The 7-foot-6 Yao, who fouled out with 3:52 to play and China (2-5) trailing 81-63, finished with 14 points and seven rebounds. The 7-1 Gasol, who plays for the Memphis Grizzlies, had 21 points and 11 rebounds in Spain's 83-58 victory over China in the preliminary round opener. Yao, who plays for the Houston Rockets, had 12 points and eight rebounds in that game.

Legends of World Basketball The second half of the twentieth century produced many star Basketball players who helped the sport’s popularity reach its zenith. Some of the greatest names come from the USA, the land that gave birth to Basketball. From the end of the 1950s and through the 1960s, there was a battle-royal between two of the ‘holy terrors’ of American and world Basketball: Wilt Chamberlain, a centre who swept over records and personal bests, came up against Bill Russell, the Boston Celtics legend, who led his team to victory in no less than eleven successive championships.  In the 1970s Lew Alcindore, later known as Kareem Abdul-Jabar, appeared in the Basketball world. Playing for UCLA and in ABA and NBA teams, he stayed in the forefront for two decades, winning titles and setting up appearances and total point records that will not be easily overcome. Another leading light of the time was Julius Irving (known also as “Dr. J”, a player who looked like he was dancing, and raised the show of Basketball to new heights. The 1980s found two of America’s great cities, Boston and Los.Angeles, struggling for the top place in the NBA under the leadership of two first-class players – for the Celtics, Larry Bird, an all-rounder with an incredible game sense, and for the Lakers, whom he took to five championships, Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson, Jr., a charismatic 2.05 m

http://hoopsanalyst.com/eurohistory.htm
HOOPS ANALYST A History of Foreign Players in the NBA by Harlan Schreiber (1/26/03) All factors are pointing to the growth of foreign players in the NBA. In 2002, the more foreign trained players, 14, were drafted then ever before. At the World Championships of basketball, players from all over the globe demonstrated an ability to compete with and even beat the United States players. The talent pool is clearly expanding. It was not always this way. We will examine the history of foreign trained players in the NBA and how the situation has changed over the years. Excluding the NBA’s early years, when the league was barely of professional level, the wave of foreign players coming to the United States started in the mid-1980s. First, great athletes, like Hakeem Olajuwon and Detlef Schrempf, were being recruited by colleges and universities and successful in the NBA. So it was well accepted that foreign players could be trained by American coaches to succeed in the United States. The question then became whether the NBA could take players who were both born and trained abroad and have them succeed in the decidedly different life of the NBA. The foreign game was and is different from the NBA game. The three point line is closer (20’6 feet versus 23 feet in the NBA), there are no restrictions in foreign leagues on defense like there are in the NBA, and the three second lane is wider than the NBA’s (19’8 versus 16’ in the NBA). The net result of the foreign rules is to encourage perimeter play because the three point line is closer, and discourage post up play, because the three second lane is wider. In addition, there is a perception that the foreign game is less defensively oriented. Finally, the foreign leagues play only 30-50 games a year while the NBA plays 82 games plus playoffs. With these differences and the differences in culture to factor in, it could be seen as something of a shaky proposition to take a chance on foreign players in the NBA. Still, the idea of an untapped talent pool has enticed NBA teams to venture of off the continent to find players.

basketball, game played generally indoors by two opposing teams of five players each. Basketball was conceived in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith , a physical education instructor at the YMCA college in Springfield, Mass., as a way to condition outdoor athletes during the winter months. His original list of 13 rules has undergone a century of revision, leading to faster pacing and greater athleticism. Today basketball is one of the most popular American sports and one the rest of the world has adopted. Basic Rules At each end of the court—usually about 92 ft (28 m) long and 50 ft (15 m) wide—is a bottomless basket made of white cord net and suspended from a metal ring, 18 in. (46 cm) in diameter, which is attached 10 ft (3.05 m) above the floor (usually hardwood) to a backboard made of fiberglass, wood, or other material. Players may throw, dribble (bounce), or shoot the basketball (an inflated ball usually made of leather or rubber) but may not run with it or kick it.
