Gearon, Wilkins Visit Brazil To Promote Charity And Basketball
Earlier this week, Atlanta Hawks owner Michael Gearon took a trip to Brazil. The reason for his trip: to support “favelas” in Sao Paulo as part of the initiatives comprising his charity organization. ... Basketball U Basketball U on the FIBA World Basketball Championship for Men From August 29-September 8, the 14th FIBA World Basketball Championship for Men is taking place in Indianapolis, Indiana, marking the first time in 52 years that the tournament will be held in the United States. This 16-team tournament is an event of FIBA, the governing body for international basketball, and features countries representing Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceania and the Americas. Since its start in 1950, the World Basketball Championship is held every four years. It is the most competitive and prestigious tournament in international basketball, and it is a great honour for participating athletes to represent their countries. Why NBA Players Can Participate Before the 1992 Olympic Games, NBA players could not participate in international competition. Teams other than the U.S., however, featured players who were veteran pro athletes, such as legendary Brazilian scorer Oscar Schmidt who played professionally in Italy. After the 1998 Games, FIBA Secretary-General Boris Stankovic felt a change was needed.

Basketball is a ball sport in which two teams of five players each try to score points by throwing the ball through a basket. Basketball is highly suited to viewing by spectators, as it is primarily an indoor sport, played in a relatively small playing area, or "court," with only ten players, and using a large ball which is easy to follow. Additionally, the lack of protective gear makes it easy to see the reactions of the players. It is one of the most popular sports in the United States , and is also popular in other parts of the world, including South America , southern Europe , and the former Soviet Union , especially Lithuania

Oscar scored 46 thousand and something (in too lazy to search for the perfect stat right now ;) ) points, to steal Karim Abdul-Jabar's record with 46 thousand and some less :D
Oscar, for those who dont know (and probably a lot dont), is a brazilian basketball player, holding the most incredible stats of all times on our basetball and owning the nickname "Mão Santa" which would be translated as "Holy-hands" in english. You can take from that which is his preference move: Shooting. From anywhere, and scoring almost always.
Oscar, after breaking it, claimed that people wouldnt compare him to Abdul-Jabar, explaining that Karim always played on NBA, where the opponents are by far better, so the guy would have tons of more credit than him. I agree, but its still incredible how someone can score so many points!
CONGRATULATIONS, OSCAR!

SPLITTER, VAREJAO NEXT SOUTH AMERICAN NBA STARS
Pop quiz: who's the all-time leading scorer in professional basketball? Kareem Abdul-Jabbar ? Nope. It's Oscar Schmidt , the Sadaharu Oh of pro hoops. As Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel explains, Schmidt was no stranger to the hoops world - New Jersey drafted him in 1984 and he starred in several Olympics and International tournaments - but the sweet-shooting forward from Brazil decided to ply his trade exclusively on his home turf.
Schmidt's influence has reverberated the last few years as South American stars like Nene Hilario and Manu Ginobili starred in their rookie years, while Brazil's Leandro Barbosa and Argentina's Carlos Delfino had their names called in the first round of this year's NBA Draft. Yes, South America has become the next basketball hotbed so let's turn our eyes toward the South American Basketball Championships. Brazil's

2004 Olympic basketball
You're watching the US women's basketball team playing against the host nation Greece. All cheers are for the Greeks. However it doesn't matter, the Yanks have far superior chemistry, ability, and all that good stuff. They have close to a 20 point lead and have just stolen the inbound pass twice and converted in a span of 10 seconds.
You recognize several of this U.S team's members who were also on the '96 squad - 8 years ago. The game announcer let's it known that Lisa Leslie and Dawn Staley played together as far back as '89 for the U.S.
You think to yourself this is how the U.S men's team used to rout their opponents. They were called the Dream Team. It was such a powerful and practical concept that it transcended the basketball sidelines and into other venues. Such as other sports, business, and even music.
In a 1997 rap single LL Cool J exclaims:
Snappin you amateur mc’s
Don’t you know I’m like the Dream Team tourin overseas
For rappers in my circle I’m a deadly disease Ringmaster bringin a tiger cub to his knees In the history of rap they’ve never seen such prominence
The last true Dream Team that could live up to the billing however was the 1996 U.S basketball team. Composed of top level, cream of the crop talent, that was the last team that could run up a 20 point barrage almost at will in a single quarter. After it defeated Brazil in an exhibition game, Oscar Schmidt the country's #1 player and hoops legend proclaimed that it might be another 20 or 30 years before the U.S can be challenged. As of then it seemed a quite accurate prediction.

Watching Basketball on Television
in Latin America In most Latin American countries, the sport of choice is no doubt soccer. In the few countries where soccer is not dominant, such as Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic, it is baseball that rules. Behind either soccer or baseball, we usually find basketball as the next favorite sport. This is true probably in many other regions of the world. One significant reason for the global popularity of basketball is undoubtedly the excitement caused by the presence of televised basketball games, primarily those exported from the United States of America. That nation is currently by far the most dominant basketball power, as evidenced by the phenomenal successes achieved by the U.S. "Dream Teams" in world championships. Apart from those international tournaments, television viewers all over the world are supplied with a constant stream of US professional games. Since these games are being played for the US audience anyway, the additional revenues coming from international broadcasts represent easy profits. That is why there exists a concerted program to export NBA/WNBA everywhere. According to the Los Medios y Mercados de Latinoamérica 1998 study, 28% of persons 12 to 64 years old in Latin America said that they regularly watched basketball games on television. These games cover NBA regular season and playoff games, WNBA regular season and playoff games as well as local or national games. In the next table, we show the breakdown of the audience of televised basketball by various demographic characteristics.

Basketball is a ball (An active diversion requiring physical exertion and competition) sport in which two teams of five players each try to score points by throwing a ball through a hoop.
It is primarily an indoor sport, played in a relatively small playing area, called the court. The speed of the game, combined with the close proximity of the spectators to the action, make basketball an exciting spectator sport.
