Born Feb. 12, 1934, in Monroe, Louisiana American basketball player regarded in his day as the greatest defensive centre in the history of the game. He set standards by which other exceptionally tall players were judged (his height was 6 feet 10 inches). On April 18, 1966, he became the first black coach of a major professional sports team (the Boston Celtics) in the United States.
Reared in Oakland, Calif., Russell led the University of San Francisco to National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) championships in two consecutive seasons (195455 and 195556). After playing on the U.S. team that won the 1956 Olympic basketball gold medal in Melbourne, he joined the Boston Celtics of the National Basketball Association (NBA). With Russell at centre, the Celtics won 11 NBA championships in 13 seasons. He coached the last two of those championship teams but retired as coach in 1969.

Bill Russell *Bill Russell was born on this date in 1934. He was an African-American professional basketball player and coach.
From Monroe, LA William Felton Russell attended McClymonds High School in Oakland, Calif. After this he finished College at the University of San Francisco and was drafted (third overall) by St. Louis Hawks in 1956 and was traded to Boston Celtics. It was at USF that Russell cultivated his skills under Hall of Fame Coach Phil Woolpert. Russell was a dominant collegian, and teamed with K.C. Jones to make USF one of college basketball's most successful teams. Russell led the Dons to 55 consecutive victories and the 1955 and 1956 NCAA championships.
From both championships Russell earned All-America honors and was named national Player of the Year in 1956. Russell waited on his professional career to play in the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne, Australia where he led the U.S. to an 8-0 record and the gold medal. His on court legacy can be defined in three words; Defense wins championships. Before Russell brought his defensive and shot blocking skills to basketball, the game focused primarily on offense. He was arguably the greatest defensive center in the history of basketball. Russell played in 48 of the Boston Celtics' 72 games as a rookie, and his presence in the Celtics' lineup began a dynasty in Boston rivaled in sports only by John Wooden's UCLA Bruins and baseball's New York Yankees.

Bill Russell was the cornerstone of the Boston Celtics' dynasty of the 1960s, an uncanny shotblocker who revolutionized NBA defensive concepts. A five-time NBA Most Valuable Player and a 12-time All-Star, the angular center amassed 21,620 career rebounds, an average of 22.5 per game, and led the league in rebounding four times. He had 51 boards in one game, 49 in two others, and a dozen consecutive seasons of 1,000 or more rebounds. His many individual accolades were well deserved, but they were only products of Russell's philosophy of team play.

Mailbag: A conversation with Bill Russell Click here for more on this story Posted: Monday May 10, 1999 03:42 PM In this week's issue, Sports Illustrated launches its year-long series on the 20th century with a cover story on Bill Russell, whom the magazine calls the greatest team player on the greatest team ever. On Wednesday, as part of an exclusive interview with CNN/SI, Russell answered selected questions from Web users. Check out our conversation with Russell, as well as SI's ranking of the 20 greatest dynasties of the century. CNN/SI: Kevin Donner from Livingston, N.J., asks: "How different would your career be if you were playing today? And do you think the term "dynasty" as it applied to your Celtics can exist in the NBA today?" Bill Russell: I'd be making a lot more money! [Laughs.] I don't think it would be that much different. CNN/SI: What about a dynasty? Would you be able to sustain it? Russell: Yes. Because what you do is, you get a core group, which we did, and there's enough money under the cap to put a group like that together and keep them. What you have to do is factor into the decision of how you build the team the cost and the limits of what you can do. CNN/SI: Timmy O'Neill from Redmond, Ore., says: "I took up the thinking that you were the best basketball player ever in the the '60s. I am still of that opinion, but got the impression last year that you had decided Michael Jordan had surpassed you. Do you actually think this, and if so, why?"

They were pro basketball's most dominant team. Never mind "three-peats." The Boston Celtics of the 1950's and '60s pulled off an "eight-peat." The Celtics had Cousy and Sharman and Havlicek. They had the Joneses K.C. and Sam. But only one star was there for all 11 titles from 1957 to 1969. Bill Russell the prototypical defensive center was a champion from his rookie season until his last game in his last championship series. Before he arrived, the Celtics had never won a National Basketball Association title. Five times the 6-foot-9 1/2 Russell was voted MVP. Four times he was the league's leading rebounder. He played in every All-Star Game after his rookie year. His 21,620 rebounds (22.5 per game) are second all-time to Wilt Chamberlain's 23,924 (22.9 average). Relying on his left-handed hook, Russell averaged 15.1 points per game in 963 regular-season games. He probably would have led the league in blocked shots several years, but that stat wasn't kept then. He was complex, introspective, enigmatic, principled, aloof. His refusal to sign autographs was legendary.
