12. Bill Russell
Short biography of the first AfricanAmerican to coach a team in a major sports and the first black inductee to the basketball Hall of Fame.

Bill Russell
That's how Bill Russell lived his life: as a leader. During his playing days with the Celtics, black players were denied admission to an Indiana bar and Kentucky hotel coffee shops so Russell and other players boycotted a game in Lexington. In the early 1960's Russell said, " The basic problem in Negro America is the destruction of race pride. One could say we have been victims of psychological warfare, in a sense, in that this is a white country, and all the emphasis is on being white." In 1966, he made history by becoming the first black coach in the post-depression era of any major American sport. In 1969, he retired as a successful player-coach. As an observer, it may seem as though Russell led a normal life in Boston. But there were fans that hated Bill Russell and he knew it. So in 1972 when his jersey was being retired, he didn't attend the ceremony. He also didn't attend in 1974 when he became the first black elected into the Hall of Fame. He also never gave an autograph because he felt that a handshake was worth more. No superstar had dealt with the media and the fans in this way. His conduct was more evidence to the statement that he was never a follower. At the time, it was important for blacks to look up to someone who did what he felt was right despite what others told him. Bill Russell's conduct exemplified this principal. He represents a modern hero for blacks and athletes alike.

William Felton Russell (born February 12 ) is a former American basketball player remembered for his central role in the Boston Celtics dynasty that won 11 championships in the 13 seasons that he played. His major contribution to the sport was raising defensive play to a new level; he is commonly considered the greatest defensive center to ever play the game. Born in Monroe, Louisiana and raised in Oakland, California , the 6-foot 9-inch (2.08 m) tall Russell played college basketball at the University of San Francisco , which he led to NCAA championships in and , including an impressive string of 55 consecutive victories. NBA Statistics Other Resources Russell's intimidating defense and great rebounding skills transformed basketball. After college coaches saw him in action at the 1955 NCAA tournament, they adopted "Russell's Rules," widening the free throw lane to 12 feet and making it illegal for a player to touch the ball when it's on its downward arc to the basket. "Doggie" Julian, the Dartmouth College coach and a member of the Rules Committee, said afterward, "We weren't planning to make any changes. But after some of the coaches saw Russell's performance, they got scared." His own coach, Phil Woolpert of the University of San Francisco, predicted that the new rules would actually help Russell, explaining, "He's so much the fastest of the big men that now he'll just leave them further behind." As a skinny, awkward 6-foot-2, 128-pounder, Russell couldn't even make his Oakland, California, high school basketball team in his sophomore year and was only a third-string player as a junior. His coordination improved, he grew to 6-foot-7, and he became a starter as a senior, but graduated in the middle of the year. Russell enrolled at USF in 1952. As a 6-foot-9 sophomore, he became the team's starting center and he led the school to 55 consecutive victories and two NCAA championships during the 1954-55 and 1955-56 seasons.
