While everyone considers him as one of the greatest basketball players ever, most intelligent people have realized that he is the best. Born in Key West, Fla., on August 6, 1965 to Ambrose and Freda Robinson, he grew up without basketball having a major part in his life. He moved a lot because his father was in the Navy. Instead of the huge part basketball plays in most of today's NBA stars, David filled his youth with doing well in school and fixing electric things (TV's, etc.) around the house. It was not until his high school years that he played organized basketball. Even then, it was not a life altering choice, it was only for recreation. After high school, he went to the United Stated Naval Academy, not a major basketball school; obviously, basketball was not a major factor in his life at that time. After being an incredible basketball player in the Navy, David Robinson was drafted by the San Antonio Spurs, as the number 1 pick. Instead of going staright to the NBA, he had to stay two years more in the Navy. So finally the day came; in November of 1989, David set foot on the floor of HemisFair Arena. He made a splash immidiately; in fact, his first block was on the considered great Magic Johnson.

He's the only male basketball player to represent the United States in three Olympics, having done so in 1988, 1992 and 1996, and was chosen as one of the 50 greatest players in NBA history. In 1998-99, his 10th season with the Spurs, he led the team to its first NBA championship. A stellar career Timeline Slide show A lean, muscular, 7-1 athlete, Robinson is fast, strong and agile. In his first seven NBA seasons he won a Rookie of the Year Award, a rebounding title, a scoring crown, a Most Valuable Player Award, a Defensive Player of the Year Award, seven All-Star selections, four selections to the All-NBA First Team and four selections to the NBA All-Defensive First Team. Although back and foot injuries limited him to just six games in 1996-97, he bounced back to All-Star status in 1997-98, averaging over 20 points and 10 rebounds a game and shooting better than 50 percent from the field something he has done in each of his healthy seasons. In 1998-99, he modified his game so that Tim Duncan could fully blossom, and the result was the most effective Twin Towers in NBA history and the Spurs' first NBA title. Robinson is living proof of the old adage that good things come to those who wait.
