David Maurice Robinson (born August 6 in Key West, Florida ) is an American former NBA basketball player, who was considered one of the greatest to ever play. A born-again Christian , Robinson is also an amateur musician who enjoys playing various instruments at home. His nickname is The Admiral , based on his service as an officer in the United States Navy . Robinson is now on staff at the Oak Hills Church in San Antonio, where Max Lucado is the pulpit minister. When Robinson was a youngster, he moved many times with his family, as his father was a Navy officer. After his father retired from the Navy, the family settled in Northern Virginia , where he attended high school. He then enrolled in the US Naval Academy Robinson was an outstanding all-around athlete and chess player; during the physical tests that the Academy gave all of its incoming plebes, he scored higher on the gymnastics portions of the test than anyone in his class, except for the plebes who were slated to be on the Academy's gymnastics team. This was even more impressive because he was 6 ft 7 in (2.01 m) when he arrived at Annapolis. To put this in perspective, virtually all male gymnasts are well under 6 feet (1.83 m) tall, and the service academies prohibit anyone taller than 6 ft 8 in (2.03 m) from enrolling. Known for both his defense and his scoring ability, the 7-ft 1-in (2.2-m) Robinson possessed agility and ball-handling skills uncommon in players of his size. Born in Key West, Florida, and raised in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Robinson attended the United States Naval Academy. He set more than 30 basketball records at the school, winning the John R. Wooden and Naismith awards as the top college player in the nation after averaging more than 28 points per game his senior season (1986-87). An excellent student, Robinson earned a degree in mathematics from the academy. Naval Academy in 1984, Robinson was 6-foot-4. He grew to 7-foot-1 by the time he graduated and was a consensus All-American center and college player of the year in 1987 after averaging 28.2 points a game. During his four years as a starter, he averaged 21.0 points and nearly 10 rebounds per game. Robinson was chosen by the San Antonio Spurs in the first round of the NBA draft, although he faced four years in the Navy after graduating. There were reports that Robinson would be excused from service because of his height, which exceeded the Navy's maximum. He did serve, but was released after only two years. Reporting to the Spurs for the 1989-90 season, the 235-pound Robinson averaged 24.3 points a game and was named the league's rookie of the year. He was chosen to the All-NBA first team each of the next two years, in 1995, and in 1996. Nicknamed the "Admiral," Robinson led the NBA in rebounds in 1991, in blocked shots in in 1992, and in scoring in 1994.
