Capital Classic brings weekend of basketball thrills
    by Dennis Ryan
MDW News Service The opening ceremonies and the two championship games were played at the Fort Myer Fitness Center, and games were also played at Anacostia Naval Station, Henderson Hall and Bolling Air Force Base. The Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps kicked off the tournament Friday night with a plaintive rendition of the National Anthem. A Color Guard from The Old Guard led the musicians out onto the basketball court at the Fort Myer Fitness Center to begin four days of exciting basketball. The Fort Myer men and the Henderson Hall women were crowned champions on Sunday after playing six games over the weekend. "It's part of building the joint services family," Edward Gonzalez, acting director of the Fort Myer Directorate of Personnel and Community Activities, said about the importance of the event. "It's competition. It's physical fitness that ties in with readiness. It allows us to share facilities and it allows the community to see good basketball." "It's gotten bigger," Tyrone Hill, chief physical activities director for Fort Myer, said about the tournament. "We had to turn four teams away in the men's division. We're partners with other services and that's what makes it unique."

Since it's here, we might as well enjoy it as long as it lasts. The ABA, the league no one was clamoring for, made its Kansas City debut Wednesday night inside Kemper Arena. Our Knights, the team too good for JaRon Rush, hammered the Memphis Houn'Dawgs for the second night in a row. The history books will show that our Knights had about as impressive a start as Knights investors could've dreamed. Not only did the Knights outclass the Houn'Dawgs 105-82, but a little more than 7,000 Kansas Citians actually showed up to watch, and to top it off, they even acted like they cared. They booed bad calls by the referees. They chanted "Knights, Knights" on occasion. They quickly identified a fan favorite in burly, longtime NBA veteran Antoine Carr, who once he gets in shape will be unstoppable in this league. When former Kansas player Darrin Hancock broke loose in the open court and threw down a two-handed jam, the Kemper crowd erupted as if Roy Williams had just announced he was turning down North Carolina.

On this page, you'll see a few things: a Top 25 with brief insights on each team, a NCAA Tournament prediction, 3 all american teams, and a group of sleepers ripe for the upset. TOP 25
  • Kansas - The past two years, Kansas has had the most talent in the country and has been unable to win it all. This year they may get it done, as two All-Americans, in Paul Pierce and Raef Lafrentz return. A lot of hope has been placed in Lester Earl, a midseason transfer from LSU. Jacque Vaughn is gone but Ryan Robertson will fill in admirably, although he can't hope to be as good as Vaughn. Duke Although on their own, neither Trajan Langdon or Steve Wojciechowski is spectactular, together they form a deadly tandem which will be tough to stop. A great deal rides on the recruits, especially Burgess, Brand, and Battier. These three should lead the inside game which will determine how far Duke goes, the backcourt is a given. Arizona - You know Arizona's loaded for a repeat when their leading scorer isn't even one of the top three returners. Miles Simon, Mike Bibby, Micheael Dickerson, and company are back and better than last year. But like Arkansas, UCLA, and Kentucky know, everyone will be shooting for them, making it tough to repeat.

Westmont, Leland meet in two big games By Dick Sparrer There was plenty on the line when the Westmont and Leland basketball teams collided last week. Not just once... but twice! The Westmont and Leland girls played an important second-place game in the rugged Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League, and the Warriors and Chargers played for first in boys action in the West Valley Division of the BVAL. But while the games were similar in their importance in the league races, the results were very different. The Westmont girls turned back the Chargers 49-37 to take over sole ownership of the second place in the division race. Mitty tops the pack at 10-0 with Westmont second at 8-2. But the Westmont boys dropped a 49-31 nod to Leland to slip a game behind the Chargers in the West Valley title race. Westmont came back to beat Lick 70-48 later in the week to improve to 7-2 in league play, but Leland beat Pioneer in overtime to move to 8-1. Warriors win Mia Simmons poured in 16 points, and Alyssa Parsons added 11 to lead the Westmont girls to the 49-37 win over Leland.

No longer is it easy to find a place where an assembly of hustlers will gather in one place to pick apart and wonder how physical specimens may perform under competitive pressure. Well, if you are one of those lost souls, that juice can still be found at the annual ABCD Basketball Camp in New Jersey, which is run by Reebok grassroots basketball mob boss Sonny Vaccaro and his henchmen. What a place...Where else can you find an assembly of basketball aficionados like George Karl, Peter Vescey, and Rick Pitino pressing palms while drinking in the stories of the hustlers of the basketball community?
