The Big O
With a cigar in hand, one of the greatest guards in basketball history looks back on his life, his Hall of Fame career and the NBA today
By Kenneth Shouler Charlotte, Tennessee, in summer is a place of stretching fields, with trees and mountains in the distance, and a high sky spotted with cottony clouds. This town of Robertson's birth, in 1938, would have been idyllic were life there more practical for his family. But his father, Bailey, lacked money to acquire farm machinery, so he moved his wife, Mazell, and three children, Bailey Jr., Henry and Oscar, to Naptown, Indiana. "Dad found a little shotgun house on Colton Street in an area that was your basic black ghetto," Robertson relates. "It was a world where you respected your elders, said 'Yessir' and 'No, ma'am.' I liked it fine." Perhaps the die was cast then: things might bother Oscar, but they would not keep him down. "I was kind of quiet when I grew up. I gravitated toward sports, because where I was from, there was nothing else to do but play sports." He didn't own a basketball, but mimicked shooting, tossing cans and bottles and tennis balls—even balls wrapped in elastic and rolled-up socks bound with string—at nothing but air. It was a sports pantomime in which he made believe that he was shooting with seconds remaining on the clock.

When you hear the word "globalization," you probably don't think of the sport of soccer. But Franklin Foer does. He traveled around the globe to explore this connection, attending soccer matches and interviewing his heroes. In this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge , Franklin Foer will tell us how soccer explains the world. SEGMENT 1 Franklin Foer is the author of "How Soccer Explains the World: An Unlikely Theory of Globalization." He tells Steve Paulson how soccer's international popularity leads to exchanges of players and coaches among many countries and results in team loyalties that transcend national boundaries. SEGMENT 2 Michael Mandelbaum is the author of "The Meaning of Sports: Why Americans Watch Baseball, Football and Basketball and What They See When They Do." He talks with Jim Fleming about the similarities between sports and warfare and religion. And George Carlin compares baseball and football. Also

No other player before or since has even come close to the all around domination that Wilt put on the NBA. In spite of all the rule changes to help offensive players in the 28 years since he retired Wilt still holds 50 NBA records - more than any other player in history. Among Wilt's most astonishing achievements was the only Double Triple-Double in NBA history: 22 points 25 rebounds and 21 assists on February 2, 1968 vs. Detroit. Wilt won the assist title in 1967-68 and made the all defense team (the award started in his 10th season) in his last 2 years. Michael Jordan
Bill Russel

Russel is the greatest winner in the history of pro sports with 11 NBA Titles in 13 years. Even with that fact in mind Russel himself once stated: "Wilt could do my role better than I could". Kareem Abdul Jabbar
After he became the all time points leader in NBA history Kareem's supporters tried to say that he was better than Wilt, however the argument did not hold up to scrutiny. At 7'2" Kareem was not as good a rebounder as either Russel or Chaimberlain. As far as titles go Kareem's titles were all won while he had either one of the two greatest point guards in history (Oscar Robertson & Magic Johnson).

As a Bearcat from 1957-1960, Oscar led UC to two Final-Four appearances and a record of 79-9. His achievements as a 14-year pro landed him in the National Basketball Hall of Fame in 1979, and he was recently named the Player of the Century by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. The limited-edition signed prints are $300 for alumni association members and $500 for non-members. That's not all, Oscar fans will also want to purchase the legend's first authorized video biography. The Big O: The Oscar Robertson Story compiles the precious highlights of Robertson's career from high school to the pros. Director Don Burrows uses the 125-minute video to look deeper into Oscar's battle for racial equality and how a shy young man became a Hall-of-Fame player, a world champion and a transplant donor for his daughter. Introduction
Subject Categories Index Cincinnati Historical ... Contact Us Oscar Robertson Oscar Robertson, nicknamed "The Big O," was born November 24, 1938 on a farm in Charlotte, Tennessee. When he was four years old, his family moved to Indianapolis, Indiana. Robertson began playing basketball as a child using a tin can in place of a ball. Later, when he had a regular basketball, he would dribble it constantly. In high school, he led his basketball team to two Indiana state titles.
Following high school, Robertson decided to attend the University of Cincinnati. While on the UC team from 1957 to 1960, he led the nation in scoring. He was a member of the U.S. Olympic Basketball Team in 1960 which won a gold medal in Rome.
After leaving UC in 1960, he became a player in the NBA with the Cincinnati Royals. For the 1961-1962 season, Robertson achieved a "triple-double" average, which means his averages for points, assists and rebounds were in double figures. This accomplishment has never been matched. Robertson continued to play with the Royals for ten years before being traded to the Milwaukee Bucks. Also, in the late 1960s, he served as president of the NBA Players Association. In Milwaukee, he helped lead the Bucks to an NBA championship in 1971. Robertson retired from the Bucks in 1974.
