Rasheed goes to the Hawks in blockbuster deal. : Wallace and Person for Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Dan Dickau and Theo Ratliff. 'Sheed gets a change of scene, 'Reef gets a chance to prove he can put up great numbers for a potential playoff team.
posted by jeffmshaw to Basketball at 11:19 PM CST (16 comments total) I'm sad. He was one of the greatest Blazers of all time. I wonder what it means for this year, i prefdict 8th seed and out.
posted by djacobs at 12:11 AM CST on February 10 At least the constant rumors will finally end... Most of the goons in the Boregonian forum think it's a good trade for Portland. I'm sort of disappointed that I won't get to see 'Sheed egg Jerry Sloan on one last time tomorrow night, but I'm looking forward to hopefully seeing Reefer lay the smack down on the Nuggs on Thursday (sorry, I couldn't resist).
Theo Ratliff he seems like a nice 'free' upgrade over Dale. I still can't believe we traded Jermaine O'Neal for the worthless sack of crap that is Dale Davis.
As for what's next... I'm betting that Dale Davis and Ruben Paterson get traded for an SG before the deadline. Any SG. Hopefully one with an expiring contract. I'm guessing that they'll either let Damon's contract expire next year or trade him to a team looking to clear cap space. No one is going to want him this season. I'm also guessing that if he were offered an extension for a hefty pay cut he'd probably mull it a lot longer than 'Sheed mulled his.

Move over, Mensa: NBA put to test
By Chuck Woodling , Sports Reporter Wednesday, June 6, 2001 If you get on the Web and bring up the site of Mensa International, the society of super brains, you can take a test that will tell you if you might consider applying for membership in the organization. I'm not sure I could answer a tenth correctly, but it made me wonder what a Mensa test with an NBA theme might contain. So with apologies to Mensa, give this 10-question quiz a try. 1. Two NBA players, starting at the same point, walk in opposite directions for four meters, turn left and walk another three meters. Why? a. To avoid the dreaded illegal defense call. b. To go to the benches during one of the countless TV timeouts. c. To get autographs of Jack Nicholson and Dyan Cannon.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Isaiah "J.R." Rider (born March 12 in Oakland, California ) is a former NBA basketball player, who played from The 6'5" (1.96 m) Rider attended two junior colleges before finding a home at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas , where he garnered 2nd-Team All-American honors as a senior. Rider was taken by the Minnesota Timberwolves with the 5th pick in the NBA Draft . As a rookie, Rider (who began calling himself "J.R." that season) took the league by storm, tallying three 30-point games in December 1993, winning the All-Star Slam Dunk Contest in February 1994 with a spectacular between-the-legs jam, and finishing the 1993-94 season as a member of the NBA's All-Rookie Team. In his second season, Rider continued to display the scoring flair that earned him praise the year prior, but began showing signs of the troubling off-court behavior that would ultimately de-rail his entire career. Though he was among the NBA's leaders in scoring at 20.4 ppg in 94-95, Rider feuded with Minnesota coach Bill Blair throughout the year, leading to a December suspension. In 1995-96, Rider's play slipped slightly, but he regardless continued his insubordination toward Timberwolves management, prompting Minnesota to deal him to Portland after the season in exchange for practically nothing. On a deep Portland Trail Blazers team, Rider's scoring dipped to new lows, but the team enjoyed a modicum of success. Rider (who inexplicably took to calling himself "Isiah" again upon his arrival in Portland) also toned down his off-court act slightly in his three seasons in the Rose City, though he was not a model citizen, either. Still, the

Ewing was fined $2,500 for what the NBA said was "escalating the altercation with Rose." ... Norm Stewart left after 32 seasons as Missouri basketball coach, and insisted it was his idea. Stewart, 64, said the inspiration came during a game at Kansas in January and a familiar chant from Jayhawks fans, "Sit down, Norm!" took on a different meaning. "I said to myself that day? `I think I will,' " said Stewart, who will serve the final four years of his contract as a special assistant to the school's chancellor. Athletic director Mike Alden, who has been at the school only eight months, said he didn't push Stewart out, as had been speculated. Alden said he was "shocked" when the coach brought it up for the first time March 15 during what he thought would be a typical end-of-season review. He said Stewart reiterated his desire to retire from coaching the following day. "I asked him, are you sure?" Alden said. "He said he had decided what he wanted to do." ... The College of the Holy Cross named Ralph Willard as its new men's basketball coach, replacing Bill Raynor. Willard, 52, had been at the University of Pittsburgh for the past five years, where he led the Panthers to a 63-82 record and one National Invitation Tournament berth. He resigned after leading the Panthers to a 14-16 season and having one player arrested on theft charges and another undergo alcohol rehabilitation. Willard graduated from Holy Cross in 1967 and was a three-year basketball letterman and team captain as a senior. ... Portland guard

What the Shaq-Kobe feud means for the Lakers, the NBA, and the rest of America.

By S. T. Karnick, editor in chief of American Outlook magazine,
published by the Hudson Institute f you want to know exactly how NBA basketball became so brain-grindingly boring in just a couple of years since Michael Jordan's retirement, the problems of this year's defending champion Los Angeles Lakers are a good place to start. The team's travails also provide an object lesson in the limits of individualism, a seminar America has been attending with increasing frequency in recent years. Then, last Sunday, Shaq sat out the marquee game against the Knicks in Madison Square Garden on national television. He was suffering from plantar fascitis, a foot injury, but the Lakers were even more miserable than he. They looked terrible in losing 91-81 to a Knicks team whose two best big men were sidelined with injuries. Bryant scored 33 points but took 27 shots to do it. The Lakers were sloppy both defensively and offensively. Despite this setback, Bryant clearly sees himself as the game's best player and one of the best of all time, and he believes that the veteran O'Neal simply has to accept it. In a recent

Two Big East teams highlight schedule for men's team
By Tim Dougherty Published: Friday, November 19, 2004 Media Credit: Colleen Keihm
To find out exactly where a team stands when it comes to the development of their basketball program, fans don't have to look any farther than the out-of-conference schedule.
The OOC schedule is played before conference games, for the most part, and determines the status of the team, and the league they play in, before the start of the new year. This year, Drexel has put together a solid core of non-conference games that many teams would envy.
With a team that was ranked first in the country for most of last year, and two Big East teams who are perennially in the NCAA tournament on your schedule, it's going to be a tough road through December, but the rewards could be lucrative in the end.
