The 6-5 Baylor was one of the players who first introduced the acrobatic, above-the-rim style of basketball bravado that Julius Erving and Michael Jordan brought to future generations. In his 1958-59 rookie season, Baylor averaged 24.9 points and 15.0 rebounds and won NBA Rookie of the Year honors. The Minneapolis Lakers made it back into the NBA Finals in 1959 before falling to the Boston Celtics in four games.

It would have been nice if management had been blessed with the balls to back him up. Cheeks was a lame duck since Day One, the players knew, and management did nothing to change that impression. It appears I may have been somewhat overly optimistic in my belief that the TrailBlazers may have been finally heading in the right direction. Portland has, over the course of this season, quietly but repeatedly revisited the same terrain. Truly, a quality individual such as Maurice Cheeks did not deserve this collection of spoiled malcontents and the overly indulgent front office that helped to create and perpetuate the problems. Cheeks was near the end of a four-year contract worth an estimated $12 million.
