Expect Celtics to be a green team
July 24, 2005 What you now see, apparently, is what you're going to get. The Celtics' 2005-06 season may not start for several months, but their roster looks pretty much set. The only wrinkle: the destination of Antoine Walker and who might come in return. Putting aside the fate of Employee No. 8 for a second, the Celtics now have 14 players who either are signed for next season or will be soon. Maybe Doc Rivers should get them together for the Under-21 World Championships to be held next month in Argentina. That's because of the 14 players, an astonishing nine are either on their rookie contracts or the second-round equivalent. Those nine represent 90 percent of Danny Ainge's haul in the last three drafts. The only one not still around: Brandon Hunter. We have Marcus Banks and Kendrick Perkins from 2003; Tony Allen, Delonte West, Al Jefferson, and Justin Reed from 2004; and Gerald Green, Ryan Gomes, and Orien Greene from 2005. We know Greene is in the picture for next season because, as colleague Shira Springer reported last week, his postdraft foot surgery was done with the understanding that he'd be healed in time for training camp. You don't operate on low-second-round picks in the summer unless you have plans for them in the fall. Gomes, meanwhile, so impressed the hierarchy with his play in the Las Vegas Summer League that the Celtics are prepared to give him a three-year deal at a shade more than the rookie minimum, which means it likely will have to come out of the team's midlevel exception. (Brian Scalabrine's signing accounted for around $2.5 million of the exception, which is expected to be in the $5 million range.)

A Competitive Era (1969-77) The preceding season saw the end of the amazing Celtic Dynasty, who had won the NBA championship 9 times in the previous 11 years, including a phenomenal eight straight championships.  Now entering the season, the NBA was now without legendary Bill Russell who had retired as player-coach of the Celtics.  The new team to beat in the East was the New York Knicks, who served notice by winning 18 straight games (a league record) early in the season.  With a core nucleus including Willis Reed, Dave DeBusschere, Bill Bradley, and Walt Frazier, the Knicks played ferociously as a team on both ends of the floor, with no one player dominating the spotlight.  Also, the season saw the entrance of Milwaukee’s 7-2 rookie, Lew Alcindor (later Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) who came out of UCLA with much fanfare after leading that team to 3 straight NCAA titles, who immediately turned that franchise around as a force to be reckon with.  He won the Rookie of the Year for his outstanding and dominating play.  New York (60-22) won the Eastern division, while the Atlanta Hawks (where the St. Louis Hawks relocated too) (48-34) just edged out Los Angeles for the Western Division title, thanks to a late season injury to Wilt Chamberlain.  The Lakers, Jerry West, had an outstanding season, leading the league in scoring 31.2 ppg.  In the playoffs, New York was able to easily oust Alcindor’s Bucks to advance to the finals.  While Los Angeles, with Wilt back in the lineup, was able to beat Atlanta to meet New York in what proved to be one of the most dramatic finals in NBA history.

Remembering Wilt Chamberlain (1936-1999) When most people mention the greats of basketball, you will always here the name Michael Jordan, Shaquille O’Neal, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Julius Erving, Bill Russell, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.  Rarely, you will hear Wilt Chamberlain’s name mentioned consistently.  Why is that?  With all the achievements that Wilt ’The Stilt’ Chamberlain accomplished, it should be a clear no-brainer that Wilt Chamberlain was the greatest and most dominant basketball player that has ever played the game We understand that most of today’s growing NBA fan base is youngsters – attracted by today high-flying, tomahawk dunking athletes in the NBA’s hip hop culture.  The NBA gets plenty of exposure these days, equipped with the all the flash and pizzazz of from abundant media coverage, and a multitude of lucrative advertising contracts.  Young fans of today just don’t know about the evolution of the one of the most popular sports league in the world.  Despite superficially hearing the names and feats of Bill Russell’s, and his 9 championships with Boston, and Kareem Abdul Jabbar’s amazing longevity and 4 championships, relatively little coverage is devoted to Wilt Chamberlain.  Although Chamberlain won only 2 championships in his illustrious career, his awe-inspiring, hard-to-believe individual accomplishments, is what sets him apart from other basketball players.

    Their Finest Hour
    By LEONARD KOPPETT
May 8, 1970 NEW YORK [Friday]-The New York Knickerbockers, displaying their finest qualities with the limited physical but important spiritual aid of a limping Willis Reed, won the championship of the National Basketball Association tonight by routing the Los Angeles Lakers, 113‚99, at Madison Square Garden.
Darlings of the basketball world and a subject of national sports interest since November, when they set a league record by winning 18 games in a row, the Knicks finally achieved the first title in their 24-year history by winning the seventh game of the final round of the playoffs. It was their 101st game this season. Walt Frazier, with 36 points and 19 assists, was the most brilliant individual, but this, like most Knick successes, was basically a team enterprise. By winning, the Knicks gave New York's happy sports fans their third professional world championship in 16 months. The football Jets won the Super Bowl game in January, 1969, and the baseball Mets took the World Series last fall.
For the 19,500 screaming spectators, the Knicks produced a staggeringly effective defense, their trademark throughout the season. In addition, their shooting was deadly in the first quarter as they built a 38‚24 lead. Soon they had a 51‚31 margin and it didn't dip below 20 points until the closing minutes.

For most pro basketball players it is a combination of both: years banging in the paint and miles sprinting up and down the court. Eventually, the body breaks down, skills erode, and the next stop is the golf course or the broadcast booth. Nat Hickey of the 1947-48 Providence Steamrollers, at 46, was the oldest player in NBA history. When teams treat the draft like a time for summer slumber, some true gems can slip through FOR NBA HISTORIANS AND FANS of the draft, it's amazing that so many current teams believe any draft pick outside of the lottery is a complete waste of time. The draft has been filled with great players, even Hall-of-Famers, who were chosen lower than the first round. How many people were paying attention in 1964 when the New York Knicks made Jim "Bad News" Barnes of Texas Western (now Texas-El Paso) the top choice? Well, just about any basketball fan. But how many were still paying attention when Willis Reed of Grumbling was the top selection of the second round? Not nearly the same number. Reed became the best center in Knicks history and the cornerstone of two championships. Barnes was a serviceable player, hardly a title-maker.

Proctor High School senior David Pokon presented Basketball Hall of Famer Willis Reed an award for his involvement with the school in September, he never imagined he would be the recipient of a scholarship honoring the former New York Knicks star. "It was a total surprise," said Pokon, co-captain of the school's varsity basketball team. "They called me Friday and told me I was selected." The scholarship, which is based on academic achievement, community and athletic involvement and merit, is given to one graduating Proctor senior each year. Pokon said he still is not sure who nominated him as a candidate, but he is appreciative.
