Willis Reed is an NBA Hall of Famer for the New York Knicks. He was named the '70 and '73 NBA MVP. The moment remains a basketball classic: Willis Reed's courageous hobbling walk through the tunnel at Madison Square Garden and onto the floor for Game 7 of the 1970 championship series between the New York Knicks and Los Angeles Lakers. The Knicks won the game and the inspirational Reed stood larger than life, a true legend. In his 10 years with New York he had earned a place in the Knicks' top 10 in nearly every category, and he was among the top three in minutes played (23,073), field goals made (4,859), rebounds (8,414), and total points (12,183). In 1976 Reed became the first Knicks player to have his uniform number retired. The words that describe Reed's playing career may sound like quaint clich‚s, but they are appropriate: endurance, pride, dignity, obligation, hard work, and courage. For a decade he applied those qualities day in and day out on the basketball court, but they were distilled into a couple of dramatic minutes at the start of Game 7 of the 1970 NBA Finals. Two decades after that legendary night Reed recalled, "There isn't a day in my life that people don't remind me of that game."

    Willis Reed
Willis Reed was born on June 25, 1942 in Hico, Louisiana, and grew up on a farm just outside nearby Bernice. His parents were Willis Sr. and Inell Reed, and his father worked as a warehouse foreman (Dawson, 2002). He played high school basketball at West Side High School, where he won All-Conference honors 1959 and 1960, as well as All-State honors those same two years (Dawson, 2002). After his high school playing days were over he attended Grambling State University for four years. During those four years he managed to fit in more accomplishments than most people would ever dream of fitting into an entire career. He led Grambling to three Southwest Conference titles, three NAIA Final Fours, including 1961 where he led his team to a national title as a freshman. He earned All-American honors as well as All-NAIA Tournament team in both 1963 and 1964. Also in 1963 he represented the United States in the Pan-American Games in Brazil. In his career he scored 2,280 points, which was good enough to land him in the NAIA Hall-of-Fame in 1970 (Dawson, 2002).

Winning six games by an average margin of almost 30 points, the USA successfully defended its championship, captured the gold medal, and extended its Pan American Games winning streak to 15 consecutive games. Seven Game 7s to Remember: Basketball
By Jack McCallum A wobbled Willis Reed helped the Knicks knock off the Lakers in the 1970 NBA Finals. James Drake 1. NBA Finals, April 13, 1957, Boston Celtics vs. St. Louis Hawks Boston Garden
During the second OT, long-legged Celtics rookie Bill Russell disentangled himself from the basket support after missing a layup, ran upcourt and blocked a shot by the Hawks' Jack Coleman. "Greatest play I ever saw," said Tom Heinsohn. Established stars Bob Cousy and Bill Sharman made only five of 40 shots, but the kids (Russell had 19 points and 32 rebounds, Heinsohn 37 and 23 rebounds) led the way to a 125-123 victory. 2. NBA Finals, May 5, 1969, Boston Celtics vs. Los Angeles Lakers the Forum
Before the game the Celtics' John Havlicek got his hands on a script that described plans for a postgame Lakers celebration, including a rendition of Happy Days Are Here Again to be played by the USC band. When the Celtics walked out, they saw 5,000 balloons suspended in nets from the ceiling. Talk about the best-laid plans. Don Nelson's jump shot, which bounded off the back rim straight up into the air and down into the basket, was a key shot in a 108-106 Celtics' win.
