Willis Reed
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Willis Reed, Jr. (born June 25 in Hico, Louisiana ) is a former American basketball player, who played for the New York Knicks during his entire career. In his first years he held the power forward position, then he gained fame as the starting center Despite his average stature (he stood at a mere 6 ft 9 in, when, for instance, his contemporaries Wilt Chamberlain or Lew Alcindor stood at 7 ft 1 in and 7 ft 2 in respectively ), Reed enjoyed a brilliant career with the Knicks, winning two championship rings, in 1970 and 1973 and one MVP award in 1970. Reed's most famous performance took place on May 5 , during Game 7 of the NBA Finals against the Los Angeles Lakers in Madison Square Garden . Despite a severe thigh injury, he started the game in front of a thrilled audience, won the tip-off, and scored the first two baskets of the game. The Knicks won the game 113-99, giving New York City its first ever NBA title. Sadly, Reed's career was cut short by injuries and he had to retire after the 1973-1974 season, his tenth. For his career, Reed averaged 18.7 ppg and 12.9 rpg, playing 650 games. For all his achievements, he was enshrined in the

The common American reed, also called reedgrass and canegrass, is a tall perennial grass ( Phragmites australis ), widely distributed in fresh or brackish wet places. It has stout, creeping rootstalks and a large plumelike panicle. In the SW United States this grass is called carrizo and is used in building adobe huts; it has also been used for thatching and cordage. Native Americans collected a sweet exudate from the plant and made arrows of the stalks. The leaves served as edible greens and the seeds as a cereal food. Due in part to the degradation of salt marshes and in part to the supplanting of the native P. australis by a Eurasian variety, the reed has become invasive in American wetlands, where it often forms a monoculture. The giant reed ( Arundo donax ), of similar appearance, is native to the Mediterranean region but is now widely naturalized throughout tropical and warm climates, including the S United States. It is often cultivated for ornament, and in Europe the stems have been used to make reed instruments, bagpipes, and reed organs. This is the reed from which

Willis Reed Leaves New York Area for the Big Easy
Yesterday, the New Orleans Hornets hired Willis Reed for their vice president of basketball operations. In his position, he will assist GM Allan Bristow and director of personnel Jeff Bower when it comes to roster decisions. Reed, enshrined at the Hall of Fame since 1982, led the Knicks to championships in 1970 and 1973; the title in 1970 was the first for the Knicks franchise and one of the most memorable performances in NBA History. Reed was injured in Game 5 of the Finals versus the Lakers and did not play in Game 6, which was the Lakers won with ease. When Game 7 came, Reed was not expected to play, but took the court moments before the tip-off, scored the first two baskets for the Knicks. His gutsy play in Game 7 propelled the Knicks to their first Championship. After a brief stint coaching the Knicks in the late 70s, Reed coached in college and was an assistant coach for the Hawks and Kings. In 1993, Reed joined the Nets as their GM and built a successful team, eventually becoming their senior VP of basketball operations. Before the 2003-04 season, Reed joined the Knicks as an advisor in the front office. Posted by tien mao in Basketball
