Farewell Four Eyes This summer we said good-bye to one of the remaining icons of the NBA's rise to prominence in the '80s. No we're not talking about Charles Barkley, but rather Kurt Rambis' glasses. Yes, the bespectacled battler has finally hung up the horn rims for good. In August, Rambis, the Lakers assistant GM, went under the laser and had LASIK vision correction surgery. "I'm like a little kid that keeps reopening his favorite present on Christmas Day. I've worn glasses since the third grade and to be able to finally see without them is an absolute miracle," Rambis gushes.

WE'VE BEEN PUBLISHING BASKETBALL DIGEST FOR 30 YEARS, AND within that time span we've made our fearless forecast. While we're proud of our status at the world's oldest basketball magazine, we're not above reversing course on a player, team, or trend. Rush on roundball
An imaginary interview with an imaginary sports expert
By Dennis Hans What follows are excerpts from my (imaginary) interview with Rush Limbaugh for the August 2003 edition of "For Laker Lovers Only," the unofficial magazine of the Los Angeles Lakers. All of the words but none of the mentality have been changed, to implicate the guilty.
Editor's note: In case you somehow missed it, this is an imaginary interview. And any expressed or implied political views are not necessarily those of this website. Enjoy.

Dennis Hans: I understand you're an NBA fan.
Rush Limbaugh: Absolutely.
DH: Did the Magic Johnson "Showtime" Lakers of the Eighties thrill you as much as they thrilled me?
RL: Yes, but what you call "Showtime" I call "The Rambis Era." Kurt Rambis was the straw that stirred the Lakers' drink, my friend. He set the tone with his hustle and desire, and his nerd-style glasses were proof positive he was the smartest player on the court. Magic, when he wasn't fornicating with floosies, merely followed Kurt's lead.
DH: But Kurt wasn't a one-man gang. There was Cooper, Scott, Worthy-

The AP reports: Michael Finley would still be with the Dallas Mavericks if they could have acted with their hearts. Instead, they had to make the right financial decision. The Mavericks were one of 18 teams to take advantage of a one-time chance to escape luxury tax obligations for any single contract on their books, waiving their captain just before the deadline late Monday night. Dallas owes Finley $51.8 million over the next three seasons. ``This is the hardest part of our business,'' said Donnie Nelson, the Mavs' president of basketball operations. ``We were trying to come up with some creative ways to still have financial freedom and somehow keep Mike. There was no way around the situation. ... There's no question that it's been a very difficult process for the franchise.''
The AP reports: Dallas, by far, reaped the most savings by releasing 10-year veteran Finley. The Los Angeles Lakers saved $29.7 million over the next two seasons by releasing Brian Grant, who was expected to sign Tuesday with Phoenix, and the New York Knicks avoid $23.1 in luxury taxes over three seasons for forward Jerome Williams. Under terms of the rule, players who were waived will still be paid by their former teams and cannot re-sign with them until their current contracts have expired. They also get whatever money from contracts with new teams.

Todd Warshaw/Allsport LOS ANGELES (AP) Dennis Rodman 's seven-week career with the Los Angeles Lakers has come to an abrupt end no big surprise considering his recent behavior. Rodman reacted to being released Thursday night by calling himself a scapegoat for the team's problems, and said the Lakers were "cowards not to take the fall for some of the things that have happened this year." The Lakers issued a statement saying they were finished with Rodman in the wake of another in a long list of incidents involving the eccentric forward earlier in the day. Desperate to win their first NBA title since 1988, the Lakers figured Rodman, a member of five championship teams, including the last three with the

Click here for more on this story Posted: Thursday December 09, 1999 12:47 PM John W. McDonough Issue date: November 9, 1992 By Rick Reilly Dear Phoenix Suns Congratulations on the purchase of your new Charles Barkley . Rest assured you have acquired one of the finest power forwards ever made. However, for your own safety, please read all instructions before using this product, and follow them carefully. Very carefully. EXAMINE CONTENTS WITH CARE Take time to check out all the working parts on your new Barkley. The shaky left knee, the left ankle, the bruised ribs and the dislocated finger that caused him to miss 21 games during the last two seasons are fine. You've got to expect your 6 ft. 6 in., 252-pound Barkley model to show a little wear and tear after eight NBA seasons and 650 games, including playoffs. But there may be some things you don't know. Right now, for instance, there is probably not a pro athlete in America who treats fans better. No kidding. Ever since he came to Phoenix in June in the megatrade that sent All-Star guard Jeff Hornacek , center Andrew Lang and forward Tim Perry to the Philadelphia 76ers, Barkley has been first-communion good. Sir Charles is pushing a royal 30 now. All he wants is a happy ending to his Peyton Place career.

Friday, September 6, 2002 Team USA Defeated: Are You kidding?
They lost? They freaking lost? The United States of America lost in an international basketball competition? To Argentina? The little Andean country that has had more presidents in the last two years than I have had Pepsis? We shot 22 percent in the first half? Was there a lid on the basket? Were the Argentineans shooting at us with pistols and slingshots? Did we replace the starting five with Cherokee Parks, Olden Polynice, Rick Mahorn, Mugsy Bogues and Kurt Rambis? We lost? That’s right folks, the United States of America, protector of freedom around the globe, the lone remaining superpower, mightiest among all nations, lost 87-80 to Argentina on Wednesday night, the first time Team USA has lost in international competition since the dawn of the Dream Team era. The following human beings are now to be officially considered national embarrassments: George Karl, Elton Brand, Antonio Davis, Baron Davis, Michael Finley, Raef LaFrentz, Shawn Marion, Andre Miller, Reggie Miller, Jermaine O’Neal, Paul Pierce, Ben Wallace and Jason Williams. They lost to Argentina. In basketball. Quick, without using the Internet, name one Argentinean basketball player. Can’t do it, can you? Well, a team of 12 of them beat the United States. Frightening. And did you see the Argentinean uniforms? They looked like they just stepped out of those Nike commercials from this summer, and then they made the Americans look like complete chumps.

    Coaching Like A Newlywed

When you were first married, did you notice all of your partner's warts? How about the bad driving, bad breath, or habitual snoring? Not likely, as early in a relationship we tend to focus on what attracted us to our partner, but as we begin to take these attributes and other qualities for granted, we begin to see the flaws.
The same is true in coaching and I am here to tell you that we need to resist the temptation to take the positives for granted and see only the warts. In a recent issue of The Sporting News, Laker assistant coach Kurt Rambis discussed his effort to focus on a player's pluses, "We try to keep an 8-to-2 ratio, that is eight positive comments to two negative ones. Players always appreciate hearing about the positive things they do. I've found that the negative comments sting a little more then, and players are more likely to take them to heart."
As you can see, Rambis is not advocating that coaches ignore mistakes or be "Pollyanna", but rather he believes in a balance that is titled to the positive side of the scale. If this is true when you are coaching young men in the NBA, it is even of greater importance in working with boys and girls of high school or youth league age.
