Dallas's diamond, Dirk Nowitzki, might not yet be the best European NBA player of all time, but he's rapidly approaching that status "THE MILWAUKEE BUCKS trade Dirk Nowitzki for Robert Traylor." All night long, Bucks coach George Karl is tossing and turning in bis bed, in the grip of a very bad nightmare. He starts screaming in horror and wakes up, crushed by the weight of not a dream, but awful reality. The deal is long done. It happened on June 24, 1998. Rumor has it that Karl is slowly driving himself crazy, with this awful trade still making his nights restless. How did the Bucks let Nowitzki get away on that accursed draft day?

http://hoopsanalyst.com/eurohistory.htm
HOOPS ANALYST A History of Foreign Players in the NBA by Harlan Schreiber (1/26/03) All factors are pointing to the growth of foreign players in the NBA. In 2002, the more foreign trained players, 14, were drafted then ever before. At the World Championships of basketball, players from all over the globe demonstrated an ability to compete with and even beat the United States players. The talent pool is clearly expanding. It was not always this way. We will examine the history of foreign trained players in the NBA and how the situation has changed over the years. Excluding the NBA’s early years, when the league was barely of professional level, the wave of foreign players coming to the United States started in the mid-1980s. First, great athletes, like Hakeem Olajuwon and Detlef Schrempf, were being recruited by colleges and universities and successful in the NBA. So it was well accepted that foreign players could be trained by American coaches to succeed in the United States. The question then became whether the NBA could take players who were both born and trained abroad and have them succeed in the decidedly different life of the NBA. The foreign game was and is different from the NBA game. The three point line is closer (20’6 feet versus 23 feet in the NBA), there are no restrictions in foreign leagues on defense like there are in the NBA, and the three second lane is wider than the NBA’s (19’8 versus 16’ in the NBA). The net result of the foreign rules is to encourage perimeter play because the three point line is closer, and discourage post up play, because the three second lane is wider. In addition, there is a perception that the foreign game is less defensively oriented. Finally, the foreign leagues play only 30-50 games a year while the NBA plays 82 games plus playoffs. With these differences and the differences in culture to factor in, it could be seen as something of a shaky proposition to take a chance on foreign players in the NBA. Still, the idea of an untapped talent pool has enticed NBA teams to venture of off the continent to find players.

Probably the earliest known description of a sporting event in Croatia is from the 18th century (1764). It referred to the regatta of two fishing boats representing the cities of Split and Makarska, from an islet near Milna on the island of Brac to the Split harbour. It was the Makaran boat that triumphed! One of truly fascinating exploits in which Croatian mariners participated is related to ARCTIC EXPEDITION in 1872-1874 , organized by the Austrian-Hungarian state. The first international football (soccer) match where Croatia participated with its national name had been held in 1907 (with Czechia). The Croatian Sporting Union was founded in Zagreb in 1909. In 1911 the Croatian representation participated under its flag (and with its national name) on the European championship in Torino. In 1912 Franjo Gregl was the European champion in bicycling. Outstanding Croatian wrestler ("junak iz Like ") was Marijan Matijevic (1878-1951). Matijevic travelled throughout the world to exhibit his extraordinary physiscal power (bending metal rods, stone breaking), including China. He is known to have surpassed Primo Carnera from Italy. Burried in the town of Zupanja near Danube.

http://www.eurotravelling.net/croatia/zagreb/zagreb_culture.htm
ADVERTISING INFORMATION Zagreb - Culture In the area of collective sports, basketball is very popular. The best players have been: Kresimir Cosic (1948-1995; he spent last years of his life in the USA as the Croatian diplomat); became only the third international player ever elected to the world's Basketball Hall of Fame, located in Springfield, Massachusetts, the birthplace of basketball; Drazen Petrovic (you can see his beautiful monument in the Olympic park in Lausanne, Switzerland); Toni Kukoc; and Dino Radja. Two best basketball teams are: Cibona (Zagreb) and the former Jugoplastika (Split), which were several times European champions. A At the close of the day, when you want to sit down in one of Zagreb's restaurants, here is a real gastronomic Mecca. You will have a truly remarkable choice from seafood, vegetarian and classical restaurants to snack bars or real gastronomic shrines. But words are insufficient you must taste the food. Try local specialties perhaps - we can recommend the Zagrebacki odrezak (veal cutlet filled with ham and cheese and then fried), Turkey with Mlinci (thinly-rolled pastry baked at high temperature and then boiled), and the original Zagorski Strukli, a continental specialty made from local pastry and cheese. And when the city lights are dimmed, a different Zagreb will emerge before your eyes, a city which moves to the rhythm of modern and classical dance mingled with the romantic sounds of a piano from a bar. You could even try your luck in one of the casinos. Different and with more dazzle, it still remains the same old Zagreb that you know - serene and safe, charming and friendly.
