Elton Brown was one of the most unpopular basketball players in Virginia history. His whole career was an example of uninspired, selfish, lazy play. Brown has a lot of talent, at least on the offensive end, but could never seem to lay off the Ding Dongs enough to get in good shape. He'd get his points and rebounds here and there, but if anyone ever pushed on him, he wilted like a plucked daisy. On top of that, if anything ever went wrong - like if a coach had the crazy notion of holding Brown accountable for not playing hard - he openly moped. Yesterday, Brown was arrested in Charlottesville for pulling out a gun when he was about to get in a fight over a woman. I don't know how big the other guy is, but I think it's a pretty safe bet that at 6'9" and about 280 pounds (depending on whether this happened before or after lunch), Brown was much bigger than his opponent. But actually fighting would just be to much effort. Why not pull a gun instead? And I love how a freaking behemoth like Brown felt the need to carry a gun around in Charlottesville. Have you ever been to C'ville? It's about as rough as silk panties.

Media Credit: Sang-Hyuck Park Western junior forward Todor Pandov defends the ball against Globetrotters forward Cedric Ceballos during an exhibition game in renovated Diddle Arena Saturday.
It had all the makings of a regular season game.
There was electricity in the air in revitalized Diddle Arena on opening night, with pictures of the recent past ushering in a new era of Hilltopper basketball.
Video boards shot memories of last season's success across the refurbished floor. The highlights started with the victory over Kentucky and ended with Patrick Sparks' last-second shot in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, which gave Western a narrow victory over New Mexico State.

http://www.strat-o-matic.com/sphere/huntbb99.htm
Rating the New Basketball Cards By Dick Hunt The newest set of Strat-O-Matic basketball cards has arrived! The first thing I noticed at a glance was that there were more 2-12 free throw shooters than there usually are. Most of those had very few attempts, of course, thanks to the short schedule, but perfection is perfection! The second thing that stood out was the durability everyone seemed to display. With fewer games to endure, players had a lot fewer injury problems. I wonder if the NBA will take that as a sign? Nahhhh, probably not... ATLANTA (31-19): Mookie Blaylock got a 1 shooting rating and a decent shooting card, especially when you consider his lousy 37.9 field goal percentage. Steve Smith makes up for it, drawing fouls very well. He also has a 2-9,12 free throw shooting rating to back it up. Grant Long was a nice surprise, getting a good card for the first time in years. Like Smith, Long could make a living on his ability to draw fouls. However, if you have Grant Long on your draft team, now would be an excellent time to deal him. Sucker someone into taking his good 1998-99 card and ignoring the rest of his mediocre career.

It was cool to get an inside view of how the show is made.
F or two weeks every summer, some of the best young basketball players from around the world travel to Long Beach. If you like basketball, the Summer Pro League at the Long Beach Pyramid is the place to be. From July 8 to 23, there are five games a day to watch at 10:30 a.m., 12:45, 3:30, 5:15 and 7:30 p.m. Just $12 general admission per day gets you a great seat. Fans can hang over the bleacher railings, see current and future stars up close, and snap a photograph. The arena is big, but you can still hear the players laughing and talking among themselves. Almost all the players sign autographs and some throw their wristbands to fans. Last year Baron Davis, a former UCLA star, was on a team, and when that team won the championship, he threw his shoes up into the crowd, already signed. NBA players Sean Rooks, Lamond Murray and Cedric Henderson have given their shoes after a game, right off their feet.

Kings Have Prominent Role In NBA History The Sacramento Kings trace their roots all the way back to the birth of the NBA. In 1949 the franchise was one of 17 charter members of the new league that was created by the merger of the Basketball Association of America and the National Basketball League. Originally located in Rochester and known as the Royals, the club has also been known as the Cincinnati Royals, the Kansas City-Omaha Kings, and the Kansas City Kings. The franchise moved to Sacramento in 1985. It has been a long road for the Kings. The team won a championship in 1951, but since then the franchise has mostly known frustration. Since the 1955-56 season the club has been a sporadic visitor to the playoffs. From 1968 to 1978 the Kings made only one postseason appearance. In 1995-96, the Kings reached the playoffs after a nine-year absence.

Jim Larranaga, currently the head basketball coach at George Mason started his head coaching career at American International, a Division II school in Springfield, MA. He promptly took a team which had suffered through five losing seasons in a row and turned the program around his first year on the scene. He was at AI for two seasons before moving onto the University of Virginia as an assistant to Terry Holland. Larranaga was at UVA for seven seasons when the opportunity to take the head coaching reins at Bowling Green presented itself. Larranaga's 170 victories at Bowling Green put him second on their all-time list. Additionally, he was only the second coach in Falcon's history to achieve back to back postseason appearances leading them to a spot in the NIT in 1990 and 1991. Bowling Green played at better than a 61 percent winning record during Larranaga's last four seasons.
