Rating the New Basketball Cards By Dick Hunt The newest set of Strat-O-Matic basketball cards has arrived! The first thing I noticed at a glance was that there were more 2-12 free throw shooters than there usually are. Most of those had very few attempts, of course, thanks to the short schedule, but perfection is perfection! The second thing that stood out was the durability everyone seemed to display. With fewer games to endure, players had a lot fewer injury problems. I wonder if the NBA will take that as a sign? Nahhhh, probably not... ATLANTA (31-19): Mookie Blaylock got a 1 shooting rating and a decent shooting card, especially when you consider his lousy 37.9 field goal percentage. Steve Smith makes up for it, drawing fouls very well. He also has a 2-9,12 free throw shooting rating to back it up. Grant Long was a nice surprise, getting a good card for the first time in years. Like Smith, Long could make a living on his ability to draw fouls. However, if you have Grant Long on your draft team, now would be an excellent time to deal him. Sucker someone into taking his good 1998-99 card and ignoring the rest of his mediocre career. | |
