Ohio State point guard Scoonie Penn said yesterday he will remain in school for his senior season rather than enter this year's NBA draft. Penn helped turn around the Ohio State basketball program after transferring from Boston College following his sophomore year. He led the Buckeyes to a 27-9 record last season and their first Final Four appearance in 31 years, just a season after the team finished 8-22. The 5-foot-10 Penn was named the Big Ten co-player of the year with Mateen Cleaves of Michigan State and a third-team All-American after averaging 16.9 points and 4.3 assists a game.

The Cleveland Browns took a step toward shoring up their run defense yesterday by signing free agent defensive tackle Jerry Ball, a three time Pro-Bowler and 12-year veteran who had 15 tackles for losses with the Minnesota Vikings last seaon. Terms of the deal, which is contingent on Ball passing a physical, were not disclosed. Defensive tackle has been a real concern for the new Browns, especially since Cleveland will rejoin the tough AFC Central where top running backs like Jacksonville's Fred Taylor

Elite Ohio State in crazy Eight
In foul trouble, Penn steps up
By Jeffrey Shelman, Post staff reporter KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - It looked like the ride was over, that the crazy journey the Ohio State basketball team has been on for the past three months was going to come to an end. Scoonie Penn was on the bench with four fouls. Auburn was on a 10-4 run. The lead had vanished, and there were still 10 minutes of basketball to be played against a No. 1 seed. It didn't matter. Not with these Buckeyes. 'The thing that keeps hitting me between the eyes is the way these guys have constantly come back to accomplish more,' Ohio State coach Jim O'Brien said. 'They've surprised me all season. When I ask myself if they can do more, they actually do more.' What they did Thursday night was come back from six points down with 10 minutes to play. And with that rally, the Buckeyes (26-8) completed a 72-64 victory over the Tigers and will face third-seeded St. John's on Saturday evening for the school's first trip to the Final Four since 1968. 'If someone would've told me before the season that we were going to go to the Elite Eight, I would've said, 'What?' ' said Buckeyes guard Michael Redd, who finished with 22 points. 'But that's what we're doing. We're going from eight wins to the Elite Eight.'

So i'm glad to see alot of Big 10 teams doing well in recruiting. Here are my thoughts on next years incoming classes in the Big 10, including Transfers and Prop 48. (Does not include UM, who I think right now has the 2nd best class in the Big 10). 1. ILLINOIS FIGHTING ILLINI - Marcus Griffin, 6-9, F/C, No. 1 Juco, #8 Brian Cook, 6-10, C/F; and Frankie Williams, 6-4, 1/2G, gives Illinois three Top 25 players coming out of High School. Griffin and Cook will likely both start right away. Williams also might start, but he will likely begin coming off the bench. Jerrance Howard gives the Illini a very capable backup PG. A very talentd class. Should help Lon Krugar get Illinois back to the upper half of the Big 10. And remember, the state of Illinois is loaded with talent in next years class. 2. MICHIGAN STATE SPARTANS - Mike Chappell, 6-8, SF, was a part time starter at Duke, a Top 25 player coming out of High School, and a very talented wing man. Could start right away at State. #81 Al Anagonye, 6-7, PF, gives State a tough post man to help ease the loss of Antonio Smith. #148 Adam Wolfe, 6-8, P/SF, should also help there. But his minutes, along with 6-9 C/F Jason Andreas will likely come down the road. The prize of this class however is #12 Jason Richardson. All summer people were saying he was just a great athlete. That he is. But Jason has developed a perimeter game to compliment his outstanding athletic ability. Should not only be one of the Big 10's top players, but in a couple years, one of the nations best. The state of Michigan could have two Top 10 teams in a few years. Like Illinois, the state of Michigan is also loaded with talent in the Junior class.

    COLUMN:
Basketball lovers suffer uncontrollable urges to spout stats, give high-fives It starts with the twitching and shaking. It's that feeling that technology is your friend as you hug the TV and down one for the guy who came up with satellite television. It's the itch, the total obsession with free-throw percentage in the final two minutes of a game. It is March Madness. Many sports fans have become stricken with this disease. Its symptoms include nervous ticks developed from clicking the remote control too quickly and the urge for diaper dandies and super seniors alike to end every sentence with emphatic answers, baby! I know what you're thinking. "That's great and all. But how can I tell if I suffer from March Madness?" Well, the columnist is in, and I have devised a little test for all you out there suffering from college basketball fever. Think of it as March Madness (MM), Cosmo style. The first stage of MM is epitomized by behavior in public. When your TA asks you who the 15th president of the United States was, how do you answer? If you'd say James Buchanan, give yourself one point. If you feel the need to add, "He was awesome, baby! A real high riser!", give yourself three points. But if you follow that answer with: "Super, scintillating, sensational - he was the three-S man," and proceed to run around the classroom doling out high-fives, give yourself five points. The MM addict only cares about the euphoria of winning and isn't afraid to share it with others.

UC can't afford to rest on its laurels if it plans on winning the NCAA championship By Bill Peterson By Christopher Witflee
The polls have been calling Stanford the No. 1 college basketball team in America, but the chatter has suggested otherwise. Bob Huggins even says out loud that the University of Cincinnati is playing for the top seed in the NCAA Tournament, and no one seems to be arguing with him. Beyond UC's installation as the front runner, little else about the tournament picture is clear less than two weeks before Selection Sunday. Between coaches polls, writers polls and computerized duplications of the influential Ratings Percentage Index (RPI), 14 different teams are rated in someone's Top 10. Some of the discrepancies illustrate an incredible range of perception. By the RPI's reckoning, Stanford not only isn't the best team in the country it isn't even in the top five. Kentucky, rated 18th by the writers, is rated second by the RPI. Contrary to the polls, the RPI says Ohio State and Michigan State aren't Top 10 teams, but Texas and St. John's are.

Final Four Frenzy: With Illinois and Michigan State advancing to the 2005 Final Four, the Conference has accumulated the most Final Four appearances with 39 (ACC-38) and boasts the second-most national titles (10) in college basketball history. The only other conference to reach double-figures in national championships is the Pac-10 with 15 titles. Since the inception of the NCAA Tournament in 1939, the Big Ten has recorded the most appearances of any conference in the Big Dance with 172 (ACC, 156) and has the second-most NCAA Tournament victories with 279 (ACC, 308). Big Ten Leads Nation With Two Final Four Teams: The Big Ten has sent at least two teams to the national semifinals on four occasions since 1992, the highest total among all conferences. The Conference also sent a pair of squads in 1992 (Indiana, Michigan) before pulling off the feat in back-to-back years for the first time in Big Ten history in 1999 (Michigan State, Ohio State) and 2000 (MSU, Wisconsin). Since 1992, only three conferences have sent a pair of teams to the Final Four - the Big 12 in 2002 (Oklahoma, Kansas) and 2003 (Kansas, Texas), the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2001 (Duke, Maryland) and 2004 (Duke, Georgia Tech) and the Southeastern Conference in 1994 (Arkansas, Florida) and 1996 (Mississippi State, Kentucky).

A club that's won seven of their last eight versus a club that's lost five straight.
A final four contender versus a team that constantly struggles to score.
Four returning starters versus a team playing with more boys than men.
The result was predicable as Scoonie Penn's 17th-ranked Buckeyes rolled over Northwestern, 58-44, Saturday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Penn was poetry in motion, finishing with 15 points, seven rebounds and four steals.
Ohio State took control of the game in the opening minutes, forcing Northwestern to commit five quick turnovers while jumping out to a 14-0 lead. The Cats outscored the Buckeyes to close the half and cut the defecit to eight, but that was the closest they would come all night.
For Ohio State, Brian Brown and Ken Johnson scored 14 and 12 points respectively. Johnson was also a monster in the middle, blocking five shots. Meanwhile, the other Johnson on the court, Ben, led the Wildcats with 18 points. Sophomores Steve Lepore and Tavaras Hardy were both held without a basket.
The Wildcats will try to stop their six-game skid against the Wolverines next Wednesday.

Net Gains Even if you don't have tickets to the big games, you can still get off the bench and take in plenty of other Final Four-related events. By Frank Etheridge
Just like tourists from around the globe, Jazz Fest pilgrims, Mardi Gras devotees and NFL powers-that-be responsible for picking Super Bowl cities, the NCAA has a special fondness for New Orleans. With this year's men's Final Four competition, our city ties the record with Indianapolis as having the most Final Fours ? our fourth following previous years of 1983, 1987 and 1993. The city's culture, cuisine and sports infrastructure have much to entice the NCAA. For New Orleans, the event brings to town a college athletics' crown jewel, along with a wide variety of sporting and entertainment events. '[The Final Four] is a huge event,' says Ron Maestri, the executive director of NCAA events for the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation. 'It has a tremendous economic impact; it brings a lot of people to the city. The hotels are booked, the restaurants are full and the airport is busy.
