NCAA Hoops '99-00
Michigan State, Auburn will meet in Indianapolis in March by Graham Couch
Assistant Editor
Teams with good veteran guards usually do the best at tournament time. Many of the teams I picked in the top 10 have that advantage. Yet, in an age where the top players often leave after their sophomore or junior seasons, a sophomore is now considered a veteran.
This season, young exciting talent will rule college basketball.
In my eyes, these are the top 10 teams in the country. That is as good as etched in stone.
1. Michigan State Spartans
As long as All-American point guard Mateen Cleaves returns in time for the Big Ten season, the Spartans should win the Big Ten. Cleaves (11.7 ppg, 7.1 apg) will be out for at least six more weeks with a bone fracture in his foot.
2. Auburn Tigers
Several years ago Auburn was dressing just seven scholarship players, and Daymeon Fishback was a starting guard. Now, Fishback will probably see only 10-15 minutes off the bench and Auburn has a roster loaded with experience and talent.

BuckeyePlanet Ohio State Forums Basketball Buckeyes PDA View Full Version : Return to the Glory Days ScriptOhio 03-23-2005, 03:15 PM Getting a top recruit (Daequan Cook) creates the excitment of the Ohio State basketball team is going in the right direction and might be competing for the national championship in the next few years. Looking back at some of the great teams of the past; what past starting fives on the Ohio State basketball teams were your favorites and/or you think were the best?
My top 5 are:
Bucklion 03-23-2005, 03:26 PM The 1968 team (Hosket, Howell, Sorenson, Finney, Meadors) that made the FInal 4 was pretty good too. I'd probably put them third or fourth...there's no arguing the top 2. 03-23-2005, 03:34 PM I'd rank 'em in date order, starting with the 1960 team. Solid on and off the court. I'd also put the 1968 team and a Gary Bradds team in there too ('63 with Ricketts and Riesbeck in the backcourt).
I haven't felt so positive about OSU basketball since Fred Taylor resigned. 03-23-2005, 03:50 PM To accurately use the term "Glory Days" you pretty much have to go back to the '60s. We have had some great teams since then, but never a program that was consistently a factor in the National Rankings. We have only been ranked back-to-back Top Ten once since '62 and '63 and only back-to-back Top Twenty twice since 1972.

Downsizing turns net gains in Big Ten
    By David Den Herder
Daily Sports Writer CHICAGO - Has Big Ten basketball taken a page from the guidebook of corporate America? If becoming smaller, faster and collectively better defines "downsizing," then consider these teams acute corporate strategists. Walking through the field of talent at the Big Ten's preseason press conference yesterday, it was hard to find a player that towered significantly over the cameras and recorders that surrounded him. It was tougher to find a camera that wasn't pointed at the conference's two defending Final Four coaches for a majority of the morning. "The last couple of years, it has really gravitated toward the backcourt," said Ohio State coach Jim O'Brien, of Final Four fame. "There are not as many dominant low post players in the conference - it probably goes in cycles, but it seems like right now there are a lot of very good guards in the league, and I'm sure teams will play towards that - as we will." And O'Brien will, with the best healthy guard in the league. Scoonie Penn - a marquee man for the Big Ten's backcourt show and the coaches' pick for preseason player of the year - has done much to heighten expectations in Columbus.

"... and all the news you get,
    from those little radios"
Like the weather, everybody complains about TV sports announcers, but nobody seems to do anything about it. All you have to do is turn on the radio. Not that the TV announcers who have been reporting the NCAA basketball games are actually bad (though some fans get all emotional over perceived slights of their favorite teams.) It's just that the games are so much more exciting on radio. Last Saturday, we caught two NCAA basketball tournament games on the radio, and both broadcasts filled the imagination. John Rooney handled the play-by-play of Connecticut's 67-62 West Region victory over Gonzaga, and his voice crackled with the tension in the air of the arena, going up and down with the noise of the crowd, baskets made and rebounds snared. Rooney called one dramatic three-point shot, chanting, "He fakes the three. Takes the three. HITS the three!" Minutes after the Connecticut victory in Phoenix, Ariz., the scene shifted to Knoxville, Tenn., and over the airwaves floated the familiar voice of Cincinnati Reds baseball announcer Marty Brennaman. But it wasn't word pictures of baseball Brennamen was painting, it was the South Region NCAA basketball final that finally went to Ohio State in a 77-74 thriller over St. Johns.

The 2005 Big East Tournament On Wednesday, March 9th, the first round of the Big East Championship opened with West Virginia, Georgetown, and Rutgers advancing to the quarterfinal round. West Virginia defeated Providence by a score of 82-59, Georgetown eliminated Seton Hall by a score of 56-51 and Rutgers outlasted Notre Dame by a score of 72-65.
Thursday’s quarterfinal action was highlighted by #8 seed West Virginia’s upset of Boston College by a score of 78-72. In other quarterfinal action, Villanova advanced with their victory over Pittsburgh (67-58), Connecticut rolled past Georgetown (66-62), and Syracuse easily handled Rutgers (81-57).
Friday’s semifinals matched Syracuse against Connecticut and West Virginia against a hot Villanova team. In the day’s opening game, West Virginia outlasted Villanova by a score of 78-76. Kevin Pittsnogle led West Virginia with 18 points while Mike Gansey made two free throws with two-tenths of a second left to seal the Mountaineers victory. Randy Foye kept the Wildcats in the game with 22 points on 10-of-20 shooting and Allan Ray added 17 points. In the other semifinal match-up, Syracuse squeaked by UConn by a score of 67-63. Hakim Warrick led the way for the Orange with 26 points and 10 rebounds, while Charlie Villanueva led UConn with 18 points and 11 rebounds.

1999-2000 record: Western Conference Standing: 14th (last) Games out of 1st place: 2000 Draft Selections: The L.A. Clippers : "The worst franchise in all of sports." Or so Sports Illustrated termed the woeful Los Angeles team in a recent issue. Donald Sterling Elgin Baylor , and the Clippers front office have become notorious for making poor personnel decisions, hiring and firing coaches at whim, giving away good players for nothing in return (i.e. letting Lorenzen Wright leave instead of pursuing a sign and trade deal with the Hawks or other suitors), and refusing to pay any player a substantial amount of cash to play for the "other" Los Angeles franchise. With nearly as much free agency money as Orlando and Chicago, playing in one of the top three television markets in the nation (which can, and I emphasize can, mean endorsements for star players), and with perhaps the top prospects in each of the last two drafts ( Michael Olowokandi and Lamar Odom ) one would think the Clippers are assembling a playoff team. But in fact the Clippers are far from the playoffs, though with a few free agency moves and a good draft they could come a step closer.
