Familiar basketball faces in Worthington summer league
By Jon Shecket Published: Thursday, July 7, 2005 WORTHINGTON, Ohio - The McDonald's Summer League reached the home stretch of its 24th season Tuesday with 18 teams playing their sixth of nine scheduled division round games at Thomas Worthington High School.
Every current member and many former members of the Ohio State men's basketball team is participating in the league, along with high school and college players from around the Midwest. In prior years, the league has included NBA players such as Jim Jackson, Nick Van Exel, and Michael Redd.
"Everybody comes out and enjoys themselves," said Bill McKenney, a 14-year veteran referee in the Worthington league. "The competition is good, the players are excellent and we all have fun together."
In an early game in the Wolves division, 5-time League champions Andrew's Insurance Agency defeated New Covenant Believers' Church 74-71. OSU senior forward Matt Sylvester led Andrew's with 20 points, former Dayton Flyer Ryan Perryman scored 19, and former OSU point guard Brandon-Fuss Cheatham had 10. Also playing for Andrew's was OSU sophomore forward Matt Terwilliger, who had 2 points.

Boyages makes a return to Buckeyes
By Dallas Scrip Published: Monday, December 8, 2003 A former member of the Ohio State men's basketball coaching staff returned to the court for his second tour of duty with the Buckeyes this season.
Boyages was born in Wakefield, Mass. and graduated from Bowdoin College in 1985. At Bowdoin College, Boyages was an All-New England basketball honoree. Boyages described himself as "a little pest who was quick but small." He always had a passion for basketball and that's why he continued a career in the field.
Boyages was named the head basketball coach at Bates College when he was 24 years old. At that time, he was the youngest collegiate head coach.
"It was a fabulous experience, a great training ground," Boyages said.

Return to home p age TERPS WHIP VALPO, CREIGHTON ON WAY TO SWEET 16
Maryland Sets School Record With 28th Win Written by Jim Johnson Posted 3/14/99 So far, so good! That's about as euphoric as it got for the Maryland Terrapins after victories over Valparaiso and Creighton earned them a spot in the NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen. While some of many lower seeded schools had wildly jubulant celebrations after their first and second round victories, Maryland merely shook hands and trotted off the court in search of bigger game. The 82-60 triumph over last year's Cinderella team, the Valparaiso Crusaders and the 75-63 defeat of the Creighton Blue Jays were expected but should not be taken for granted. In a tournament where the unexpected has become commonplace, a higher seed such as Maryland should take great satisfaction in moving through the first two rounds unscathed. Five teams seeded fifth or higher were victims of schools seeded twelfth or lower in the first round. Additionally, all seventh seeds lost to tenth seeds and all eighth seeds lost to nine seeds in the opening round. In the second round, two second seeds and two third seeds were knocked off. The South Region, where Maryland is competing, is the only bracket where the top four seeded teams avoided upsets and all advanced to the round of 16. Before looking ahead, let's look at how the Terps advanced. Valpo was feared because of their surprising success in last year's tournament, but this Crusader squad did not bear close resemblance to that group. The hero of their 1998 miracle, the coach's son Bryce Drew, has moved on to the NBA and this year's starting lineup included three freshmen. Nonetheless, a disciplined, well-coached team can prove troublesome for a high-octane team such as Maryland if they are not hitting on all cylinders. Through most of the first half, Valpo managed to stay with the Terps. They may have even built a lead if not for the efforts of Terence Morris and Steve Francis. A 9-0 run near the end of the second half enabled Maryland to take control of the game and go in with a 46-36 edge.

I've moved. For the last week I've been in the process of moving from Saint Louis to Baltimore. I caught the last two minutes of US-Argentina somewhere in West Virginia on a K-Mart television screen obscured by a blue light. I've been reading a LITTLE bit of commentary on the squad. As a lifetime baller with middling skills, I've got one question particularly for the conservative commentators. Has anyone suggested COMPETING for slots the next time around? Open the team up to International players like Scoonie Penn, or even folks like Jarvis Walker. Open it up to high schoolers, to college players, and to pros. Make cuts. Hell, make it a reality show. Then put them on the road against competition a year ahead of time at least.

Although no marquis match-ups have begun, some of the country’s elite programs have already started play. Wake Forest, the CHN preseason #1 pick, joined Providence and Arizona on ESPN this week. Rick Majerus, taking a year off from coaching at Utah, is a new voice calling games for the worldwide leader. My Take: No one is happier than I am over seeing Majerus back around college hoops, albeit in a broadcasting booth. Majerus is one of the best college coaches of our generation and equal parts charm, basketball expert, and crumb magnet. The coach’s first experience as a color man had a few awkward bumps, but his insight was refreshing. He was gushing like a Britney fan over the talent of Chris Paul, Wake’s lead guard and a preseason CHN All-American. Interestingly, Majerus explained why Paul stands out in a way few others could. His eloquent, yet erratic broadcast made the game more interesting and his herky-jerky style will only get better as the season progresses.

History
College basketball All-America teams weren't named until 1929, when both College Humor Magazine and the Christy Walsh Syndicate began selecting teams. The first truly authoritative selections were made by the Converse Yearbook , beginning in 1932 and continuing through 1948. Other major selectors didn't get involved in naming basketball All-Americans until after World War II: Associated Press in 1948, the National Association of Basketball Coaches and United Press in 1949, and International News Service in 1950. However, the Helms Athletic Foundation (now the Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles) chose basketball All-Americans retroactively, beginning in 1920. The Helms panel named ten players for each year, but didn't categorize them as first team or second team. Several of the other major selectors have chosen second- and third-team All-Americans from time to time, though not with any great consistency. The lists below incorporate the Helms All-American teams from 1920 through 1932. From that point on, players selected by other sources are also included.
