Don't "if" your life away
V-mail: Feb. 16 Q: Jamaal Tinsley and Iowa State are playing real good ball right now, but tell me this if Marcus Fizer were still there, would they be No. 1 right now? And do you see them as a sleeper for the Final Four? Ajuan Armstrong, Chester, Pa. VITALE: We can play the "if" game all the way down the line. If Duke had Elton Brand Corey Maggette and William Avery along with the likes of Shane Battier, plus Jason Williams and Mike Dunleavy coming off the bench, they'd probably have a good shot at No. 1 one as well. You can "if" your life away if you want. Of course, Fizer would help them immeasurably. He stretches defenses and has the power inside force that teams would really have to concentrate on, leaving others wide open. But Larry Eustachy isn't thinking about what could be happening if he had Marcus Fizer . He just rolled up his sleeves and went to work with what he has on his roster, who have been sensational especially the phenomenal backcourt of Jamaal Tinsley and Kantrail Horton. Duke's Mike Krzyzewski has become college basketball's unofficial statesman.

NCAA Tournament Recap (Ohio St-Auburn) Posted: Fri March 19, 1999 at 1:52 a.m EST KNOXVILLE, Tennessee (Ticker) The 1990s were anything but kind to top seeds in the South and Southeast Regions of the NCAA Tournament. The backcourt combination of Scoonie Penn and Michael Redd combined for 48 points as fourth-seeded Ohio State overcame foul trouble to upset Auburn, 72-64, in the regional semifinals. The loss by the Tigers (29-4) completed a decade of misery for top seeds in the South. Only one team Kentucky in 1993 survived the region as a to reach the Final Four. Duke was eliminated in last year's regional final, and Auburn joined Michigan State (1990), Connecticut (1996) and Kansas (1997) as top seeds who lost in the regional semifinals. The Buckeyes (26-8), who were 8-22 in coach Jim O'Brien's first season, are one step away from their first Final Four appearance since 1968 and ninth overall. Ohio State will play third seed St. John's on Saturday for a spot in the Final Four at St. Petersburg, Florida. "They've surprised me all season," said O'Brien. "When I ask myself if they can do more, they actually do more and surprise me. It was a good win under the circumstances with all those fouls."

Junior Stat to note Penn can score (17 points a game) and dish it (4.6 assists per), but his real strength is his leadership. With him at the point, the Buckeyes won 15 more games than they did last year, a school record. Scouting report His mom used to call him Uno, for No. 1, and Scoonie kind of grew out of that, OK? Scoonie the nickname grows on you heads into the NCAA Tournament hobbled, with a bruised left hip and sore buttocks. But expect him to grit it out. With backcourt mate Michael Redd, Ohio State has one of the country's most devastating guard tandems, and the Buckeyes are picked by many as a Sweet 16 sure thing. Scoonie had to sit out a season after transferring from Boston College, following head coach Jim O'Brien. It was a chancy move, considering Penn was named Big East Rookie of the Year in 1996. But it worked out: Penn was voted the Big Ten MVP is in his first year in Columbus. Penn Scoonie, remember? is a strong shooter (46 percent overall), though he got off to a slow start in this year's tournament. Penn, probably still hobbled by his injuries, went 2-for-12 against Murray State (and 1-for-8 in 3-point tries) in Ohio State's first-round win.

2005 Minnesota Summer League - Day 1
By Josh Redetzke
Nikoloz Tskitishvili
As I was driving up to the Target Center well before the first game was about to begin, I noticed a tall white guy walking down the street with a short mop top. "That looks like Nikoloz Tskitishvili," I thought, "but he isn't on any of the rosters. I wonder what player that is?" As it turns out, it was Nikoloz Tskitishvili. In an odd case of foreshadowing, Day 1 of the Minnesota Summer League became the "Skita" Show. Added to the Wolves' roster just hours before the league started, Tskitishvili put on a clinic in the last game of the day versus the Bucks. In just 17 minutes of play, Skita managed 25 points and 10 rebounds, shooting 4 of 5 from the three-point line and 8 of 11 overall. But, it wasn't just the shooting that was impressive. He hustled and fought for rebounds and loose balls and played completely in control, turning the ball over just once despite not being part of the Wolves practice sessions this week.

In a draft with no consensus top pick, Texas seven-footer Chris Mihm looks like the closest thing to a future superstar IT NEVER FAILS. EVERY YEAR around February, you hear the same refrain from the NBA: The upcoming draft class is short on talent; only the top few picks will turn into impact players; here are more kids who are short on fundamentals and long on ego who will only further dilute the watered-down league. Our response? Boo-hoo.

A Buckeye Classic in the Worthington Summer League
By John Porentas If you are an Ohio State fan, more specifically, an Ohio State basketball fan, tonight was your night in the Worthington Summer League. Buckeye Corner squared off with Union Savings Bank in the semi-finals of the league tournament tonight. The combined starting lineups had Tony Stockman, Sylvester Mayes, Ron Lewis, J. J. Sullinger, Scoonie Penn, Brayden Bell, Matt Marinchick, Je'Kell Foster and Terence Dials on the floor. The lone starter without an OSU connection was Donatas Zavacas from Pitt. It was a great opportunity to see a lot of Buckeyes in action...for a long time. At the end of regulation, the game was tied at 89 as Terence Dials took an inbounds pass and scored a layup to tie the game with just under six seconds remaining and send it to overtime. The first overtime ended when Tony Stockman knocked down a three with 33 seconds left to tie the game at 98. Buckeye Corner then made a defensive stand that ended with a miss by Scoonie Penn at the buzzer to send the game to a second overtime. The second overtime saw each team put six more points on the board, the last three another three-pointer by Stockman with three seconds on the clock to send the game into a third three-minute overtime period with the score tied 104-104.
