Red stops me in the Red Sox dugout and begins talking contract, and thirty minutes later we’d come to an agreement.” The Celtics weren’t Auerbach’s first professional coaching job. He coached the Washington Capitols from 1946 until 1949, working for owner Mike Uline. Uline had made a fortune in the ice business, and Uline Arena was home to the Washington Lions of the Eastern Hockey League. In an effort to boost the arena’s income and cut down on the number of open dates on the calendar, Uline purchased a BAA franchise and offered the head coaching job to Auerbach. The Capitols were competitive under Auerbach, making the playoffs every year and advancing to the finals after the 1948-49 season. There, they lost to the George Mikan-led Minneapolis Lakers.

HISTORY OF THE LOUISIANA BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME The Louisiana Basketball Hall of Fame is one of the major projects of the Louisiana Association of Basketball Coaches. The Hall of Fame was created to honor former great basketball players and coaches from Louisiana universities and colleges. The Hall of Fame is located in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge. It contains plaques and mementos of persons elected to the Hall of Fame, along with other historic basketball memorabilia. Individuals are nominated to the Hall of Fame by their respective schools and are elected on an annual basis by a vote of the LABC's Board of Directors. Individuals are not eligible for election until at least five years after they have completed their collegiate careers. Charter members were elected in 1975 and inducted in 1976. They were Bob Hopkins of Grambling St.; Jackie Moreland of Louisiana Tech; Bob Pettit of LSU; Willis Reed of Grambling St.; and Cliff Wells of Tulane. Additional individuals have been inducted every year since 1976. Inducted in 1977 were Pete Maravich of LSU; Lee Prather of Northwestern St.; and Malcolm "Sparky" Wade of LSU.

James Worthy won three championship rings with the L.A. Lakers (1985, 1987, 1988). J.D. Cuban/Getty Images SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) James Worthy and Robert Parish squared off in the classic Lakers-Celtics NBA Finals of the 1980s. Now they could enter the Basketball Hall of Fame side by side. Worthy and Parish were among 21 finalists announced Monday, the largest group ever by the North American screening committee, which considers the men's college and pro game. At least 18 votes from the 24-member honors committee are needed to be a finalist. This September's inductees will be announced April 7 during the NCAA Final Four in New Orleans. Worthy, one of the game's great fast-break finishers, led North Carolina to the NCAA title in 1982 and helped boost Los Angeles to three NBA championships (1985, 1987, 1988). He is one of seven Lakers to have his number retired. Parish holds the NBA record for most seasons (21) and most games (1,611) and helped lead Boston to NBA titles in 1981, 1984 and 1986. He holds the NBA record for defensive rebounds (10,117) and scored 23,334 points during a career that included stints with the Golden State, Charlotte and Chicago as well as 14 seasons with the Celtics.

James Worthy won three NBA titles and an NCAA championship. Mike Powell/Allsport NEW ORLEANS (AP) Robert Parish and James Worthy played against each other during the fierce Celtics-Lakers rivalry of the 1980s and were among the 50 greatest players in NBA history. On Monday, they became teammates, elected together to the Basketball Hall of Fame. "I'm still floating, trying to grasp the impact," Parish said. "When I'm inducted I'll think of all my teammates." Also chosen for the basketball shrine were Meadowlark Lemon of the Harlem Globetrotters, NBA pioneer Earl Lloyd, longtime Louisiana Tech women's coach Leon Barmore, Italian player Dino Meneghin and the late Chick Hearn, who broadcast 3,338 consecutive Laker games. The seven were selected from a record group of 30 finalists and will be inducted in early September in Springfield, Mass. Among the finalists not elected were former Missouri coach Norm Stewart and ex-Kansas State coach Tex Winter. Parish holds the NBA record for seasons (21) and games (1,611). He spent 14 seasons with the Celtics and became a star in Boston after six seasons with Golden State.

Obituary: Gus Krop / Winningest basketball coach at Robert Morris
Tuesday, August 02, 2005 By Wade Malcolm, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
One by one they sounded off, like friars honoring their own, roasting all those funny, irreverent stories with a dash of sentimentality. It was May 15, 2004, and it was an event to honor Gus Krop's 87th birthday. The invitation to the event said gifts weren't necessary "just bring your fondest memories instead." So that's what friends, family and past players of the former Robert Morris basketball coach did they stood in front of the crowded banquet party and shared their favorite coach Krop stories. A man known for intensity on the court and congenial warmth off of it, Mr. Krop, of Squirrel Hill and the South Side, died Friday of chronic heart problems. He was 88. Mr. Krop never imagined the party would become a tribute to him. "He wanted to have a celebration to thank all the people who had an impact on his life," said his daughter, Mimi Krop Curry, of Greenfield.

APRIL 15, 1965 "Havlicek Stole the Ball!!!" It is the most famous radio call in basketball history, hoops' equivalent to Russ Hodges' famed "The Giants win the pennant! The Giants win the pennant!" from baseball's 1951 National League playoffs. In Game 7 of the 1965 Eastern Division Finals, the Celtics' lead had shriveled to 110-109, and Philadelphia regained possession with five seconds left after an inbounds pass attempt by Boston's Bill Russell hit one of the wires that ran down from the ceiling of Boston Garden and helped support the baskets in those days. Hall of Fame guard Hal Greer prepared to toss the ball inbounds under his own basket. The logical target seemed to be massive Wilt Chamberlain in the low post, but Russell fronted Chamberlain and took away that option. Greer spotted forward Chet Walker, seemingly open beyond the key, and passed it to him ... but Boston's John Havlicek had taken a position several feet off the direct line between Greer and Walker, making it look like Walker was open when he really wasn't, and after counting off a couple of seconds in his head, Havlicek sneaked into the passing lane.

Attention Coaches! (Posted Jan. 3, 2005)
Several teams are still missing rosters. Teams who have not submitted their missing rosters to the diocese by Friday, January 7 will have their games results recorded as forfeits until they submit their missing rosters. Thank you for your prompt cooperation. In 2003 the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in Washington D.C. (USCCB) instituted NATIONALLY a safe environment program for children. Each diocese is audited annually for compliance with these national norms and regulations. http://www.usccb.org/ocyp/websafe.htm In 2003 the Diocese of Metuchen issued regulations echoing the USCCB mandates which have been posted on our diocesan and league websites. http://www.yandyam.com/YM/sports_bylaws.html They include two criteria.
  • Coaches are required to pass a criminal history background check. 322 / 378 have shown compliance
  • Coaches who have not shown compliance will be given until January 18, 2005 to prove compliance with these national and diocesan mandates. On January 19, 2005 coaches not in compliance will be suspended from coaching in the Diocese of Metuchen CYM Basketball league.

By Patrick Mondout The '79-80 set was the third straight set of 132 card basketball sets from Topps with no subsets. Wax packs came with two additional cards this year, bringing the total to 12 per pack - and don't forget the gum! For those that did want to forget the gum, there were also 500 count vending boxes available to the hobby. While there are a number of hall of famers in this set, the only collector interest is in the Alex English rookie card. Even then interest is lukewarm as Alex English is certainly the most underrated and understated high-scorer in the history of the game. 1979-80 Topps at a Glance Back Checklist Wax Pack Jamaal Wilkes Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Marques Johnson Elvin Kevin Porter Moses

    1977-78 Topps Basketball Cards
By Patrick Mondout When you've just created the best set of basketball cards you've ever produced, how do you top it? It seems Topps really didn't try. The '77-78 set is a standard sized set of 132 cards with only one unusual characteristic: cards can be found with both the normal grey cards stock and white card stock, which is noticeable on the backs of the cards. Neither carries much of a premium, but collectors definitely appreciate the white card stock given a choice. The cut back all the way to 132 cards (from 330 as recently as 1975) means there are no subsets at all; an all-star logo is provided for the standard cards (see the David Thompson card on the right) of honored players instead of a separate card as in the past. Though not as colorful or airbrushed, the cards are perhaps most reminiscent of the ' 72-73 set , with team names at the bottom whose letters get successively bigger. Like the '
