Heirs to the Air By Dave D'Alessandro
The Sporting News Years from now, when you're old and gray and your grandchildren are gushing over the talents of some 7-3 point guard from Libya, you will be asked to recollect the talent of Michael Jordan as you all gather around the Microsoft Cybertube (retail price: $9,995) for a Sunday NBA quadupleheader. It shouldn't be hard to do. "He was the best at everything," you'll say, pausing long enough to have an android nurse wipe the oatmeal from your chin. And, just before you fade into your 12th nap of the day, you'll repeat, "The best . . ." Not even your failing memory or the convenience of time detachment will be able to alter this reality, either. Because you only have to remember one thing: In your time, when both you and Michael were in the prime of life, he was the touchstone for everything related to basketball. He was all things to all people-the best at this, the best at that, the best at everything in between-and this was the foundation of his spit-polished legacy. Just be thankful the kids didn't ask who became "the best" upon his retirement, because this is a question our feeble, superannuated brain cells will have trouble computing.

Smith's shot at
success goes in Epic failure taught former Knick how to triumph By FRANK ISOLA
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Charles Smith hasn't let one bad moment on the basketball court hold him back in life.
Charles Smith is wearing an expensive tailored suit and rimless glasses, like so many other successful businessmen who are inside Madison Square Garden on a cold winter's night to watch the Knicks. He would prefer to remain anonymous, but Smith's slender 6-10 frame is a dead give-away, especially at his former place of employment. The fans are mostly polite, but every once in a while there are those awkward moments when Smith's past, fate and an inebriated fan collide. The conversation is always quick and often brutal. "What the hell are you doing here?" a stranger once asked him. "Why are you here?" "The guy had a lot to drink," Smith recalls. "I think he was one of those Game 5 guys. It's hard to fathom that anyone would still harbor such strong feelings about that play after all this time." Tomorrow is the 10-year anniversary of the night Smith missed four point-blank layups against Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls in Game 5 of the 1993 Eastern Conference Finals, the night he failed on that most public of stages.

  • Home Teams Press Box Tickets ... Notes/Facts Michael Perry- Head Coach M ichael Perry has proven to be a major catalyst in the growth of the basketball program that has risen to heights never seen before at Georgia State. In 2003-04, Perry guided the team to another impressive 20-9 finish with Top 50 rankings in four different categories. And, as most coaches have to do, Perry overcame injuries, suspensions, and problems to find solutions to win. His overall coaching record is now 44-33 (57 percent). In 2004-05, the Panthers played a tough schedule with eight games against NCAA postseason teams (winning two). The 14-15 mark was good enough for the team to earn a ninth straight tournament berth (only the top eight earn a bid in the A-Sun). The team finished 10th in the nation in three-point baskets made. In 2003-04, Georgia State had two seven-game winning streaks and knocked off four teams ranked in the Top 100 RPI. The Panthers led the A-Sun inboth field goal percentage and free throw percentage while setting a new school record for assists. They were also successful on defense with a conference-best 29.6 percent three-point defense and second-best 41.9 percent overall FG defense. The team blocked more than 100 shots for a seventh consecutive season and had a +2.3 rebound advantage on the boards. After taking over the 4-6 team on Jan. 3, Perry guided the Panthers to a strong 10-9 finish with four tough overtime games. Perry led the team to a opening round conference tournament upset over North Division champion Belmont before bowing out to eventual NCAA-bound Troy State in a thriller to the closing minutes.

    New Basketball Stats
I agree with Chris. I mean hockey has the +/- ... basketball should keep track of the stat he said, plus forced turnovers and opponent FG%. Yeah it's imperfect because of switching men, zone defenses, etc. It's imperfect in the same way a wide receiver bobbling a pass and letting the defense catch it fucks up a QB's rating. But so what. Basketball is a mad defensive game these days, but besides steals, blocks you have no individual defensive stats. Looking at the numbers tells you nothing about Charles Oakley in his prime, and that's stupid.

    2002-2003 Season Recap
There are not too many Wizards fans, or Michael Jordan fans, who can look back at the past two seasons and see anything other than a failure. Yes, the team gained some much needed national and international exposure but even that might be tarnished after the team's abysmal and shocking dismissal of MJ. A franchise that two years ago had lots of wind in its sails now looks like the Bismarck, sinking to the bottom of the cold, danky, Atlantic Ocean. Jordan is gone as a player and as an executive, Doug Collins is gone as coach and the worst of all, Kwame Brown is still here. The last two seasons are a failure because when it is all said and done, the team is no better off than when Jordan came aboard as a player 2 seasons ago (although many of you will argue that the team has good young talent and to that I would say they have young talent). The hope for the Wizards when MJ decided to play again must have been threefold:
  • The Wizards would make the playoffs for 2 seasons, or at the least 1 season and gain some momentum for the moribund franchise

    TEAM HISTORY
Toronto Raptors As late as April 21, they were in the thick of the Eastern Conference playoff after beating the Orlando Magic at the O-rena 95-88, they held a winning mark of 22-21 and the city was abuzz with talk of a first-ever postseason appearance. However, back-to-back home losses to Detroit and Charlotte sent them spiraling into a six- game losing skid that abruptly ended their playoff aspirations. Nevertheless, 1999 was a remarkable turnaround season for the Raptor franchise. The combination of Glen Grunwald's shrewd managerial moves, Butch Carter's steady coaching, and Vince Carter's
