Steve Nash: A Point/Counterpoint
By Nick Prevenas
Steve Nash
Photo: AP/Kevork Djansezian Pros: Nash provides a terrific role model for younger basketball prodigies. He would rather energize the crowd with an assist to one of his high-flying teammates than dribble out the shot clock and launch a contested 20-footer. He brings out the best in his teammates and acts as a true floor general. Cons: Here are his career numbers: 12.8 ppg, 6.7 apg, 2.6 rpg, 3 All-Star games. Here are his 2004-2005 numbers: 15.5 ppg, 11.5 apg, 3.3 rpg. People point to how awful the Suns looked when Nash was on the DL. All that tells me is their backup point guard sucks. The drop-off from Nash to Leandro Barbosa is jarring, like watching HDTV for a month then suddenly switching to a 13" black-and-white TV left over from the “I Love Lucy” era. Barbosa is fine in short bursts, but if he’s matching up with the other team’s starting point guard for 30 minutes a game, that’s a cry for help.

Get your own space ... Music Blog May 28 What if Steve Nash is a Filipino? I read Jim Caple's article about Steve Nash's Canadian city of Victoria, often making references to it as Nashville (yes, the same as the one in Tennessee) in honor of this year's NBA Most Valuable Player. With his humble demeanor and no-tattoo display, Nash is a rarity among the field and an ideal model of the league in reviving its deeply tarnished image caused by drug abuse, domestic violence and to some extent, selfishness ("I told you I needed to feed my family (sic) that’s not going to cut it. And I’m not going to sit here and continue to give my children food while this front office takes money out of my pocket", noted an NBA player who was offered $21 for three year extension).
Nash's humble beginnings as a basketball player came as a secondary option to his sport while growing up: hockey and football player born in South Africa and raised in Canada with aspirations of hitting it big in the hardcourt.
Unbelievable work ethic made him what he is right now: he shoots the ball by the hundreds and never leaves the court until he hits his goal for the day. Exuding confidence of the game sans experience enabled him to send letters and videos to dozens of colleges and universities in hopes of getting a scholarship. Nobody paid attention. And who would, to a six-footer from an obscure Canadian city whose interest in basketball is next to hockey and baseball and whose basketball's biggest name at the time was Bill Wennington?

Despite the fact that his Phoenix Suns – who are trailing the experienced San Antonio Spurs 3 games to 1 in the Western Conference finals appear destined to be eliminated from the NBA Playoffs this week, Steve Nash has nevertheless put together a truly remarkable season. The Victoria-raised point guard has reached the pinnacle of the basketball world and the height of Canadian sports fame. Having already become the first player from north of America to win the Most Valuable Player award, Nash’s playoff performance – especially his superlative play in eliminating his former team, the Dallas Mavericks – evoked only slightly hyperbolic comparisons to the likes of Michael Jordan and Oscar Robertson. In Canadian sports, Nash now stands alone, aided by the NHL season having been put on ice. In fact, perhaps only retired hockey star Wayne Gretzky eclipses Steve Nash’s fame in Canada’s sports world today. And while there are some striking parallels between these two compelling athletes, one hopes that they will end when Nash’s career does. The Great One, now president and part owner of the NHL's Phoenix Coyotes, has maintained his post-career profile as a shameless corporate shill, pitching every product imaginable and never missing a shot at self-promotion. Nash, like Gretzky did during his prime, dominates his sport with unequalled play-making, passing, and vision and in spite of his lack of size and power. He also like the hockey legend during his Edmonton years is the centre-piece of an exciting, young, offensive-minded team. A final similarity is that Nash checks in at a playing weight well under 200 lbs. (though he's listed at a generous 195 lbs.), which can lead to rather absurd and metaphysical explanations for his greatness, while adding to his underdog mystique.

Jul. 28, 2005 03:35 PM TORONTO - Fans at Basketball Day in Canada applauded politely when Prime Minister Paul Martin came to the podium, but hooted, hollered and gave NBA star Steve Nash a standing ovation when it was his turn to speak.
Hundreds gathered Thursday at Nathan Phillips Square to honor the Canadian, who was given the James Naismith Award for his MVP season and his contributions to basketball both on and off the court in his country.

"I also want to say how excited I am that there are so many kids out there playing basketball," Nash said to the group of star-struck children.
The basketball day included free-throw and dribbling contests for all ages, while players and coaches of Canada's national teams conducted skills clinics and autograph sessions.

ITS TAKEN AWHILE, BUT I FInally found my first runaway "One-on-One." Going in, I had a sense that Steve Nash would have a significant advantage over the younger Tony Parker, but the gap is actually pretty wide, thanks in large part to free throw shooting.
Nash, in his eighth year at age 30, certainly benefits from his maturity and experience, while Parker, a 21-year-old third-year player, has all the tools, but has yet to develop his overall game.
Granted, Parker's rookie stats9.2 ppg and 4.3 apgas a 19-year-old were beyond anything Nash could compile (3.3 ppg and 2.1 apg in only 10.5 mpg), so if Parker continues to work hard and improve every year, he has the potential to become an elite point guard.
