VANCOUVER - Premier Gordon Campbell congratulated Victoria native Steve Nash on being voted the National Basketball Association's Most Valuable Player today. Nash is the first Canadian player to win the annual Maurice Podoloff Trophy.
"Steve Nash is an inspiration to everyone. It was 13 years ago that Nash helped lead Victoria's St. Michaels University high school squad to the British Columbia Championship. Today he's the MVP in the NBA," said Campbell. "Nash's career is a testament to the fact that big dreams, hard work, and dedication can take you to the top of your game, no matter what you play or do."
The MVP title is determined by a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters from across the United States and Canada. Nash also got the nod from NBA fans as their choice for most valuable player. "This is a proud day for the people of Victoria, and indeed all of British Columbia and Canada," said Campbell. "Nash is a proud British Columbian and Canadian - today we can all let him know just how proud of him we all are." Nash has helped transform the Phoenix Suns squad since he joined the team in the off-season. The Suns finished last season one game out of last place in their division. This year they have the league's best record and are in the running for the NBA championship.

    Basketball players-Biography.
National Basketball Association. Grades 9 and up / Ages 14 and up.
    Review by Alison Mews. excerpt:
One day, when Stephen was about 11, he stayed out in the backyard and juggled his soccer ball for 612 touches, keeping the ball in the air off his feet, knees and head, John [his father] says, still shaking his head in disbelief. He came into the house and he fell down, exhausted. He was always doing things like that. That kind of determination continued and then mutated when Steve eventually turned his full attention to basketball. During his junior high and high school summers, he often played basketball for as many as eight hours a day. And when the other kids went home to eat supper, or out with their friends, Steve hit the playground alone, setting himself up with a regimented workout schedule. One day, he would assign 500 jump shots to be made before he would allow himself to leave court. The next day, it would be 200 free throws. Steve made a schedule and he stuck with it, refusing to go home until his job was complete. It wasn't like work, really. Steve looked at it as more of a challenge. But often that challenge meant going home in the dark, alone. Long Shot is an inspirational biography of a young Canadian athlete who beat the odds and made it to the prestigious NBA league. The odds of an American basketball star getting into the NBA are 7,600 to 1, but for a Canadian the chances are microscopic. As indicated in the subtitle, this book chronicles the journey of Steve Nash towards his NBA draft pick rather than his career since. Jeff Rud is well-positioned to write this biography since, as the sports columnist in Nash's home town of Victoria, he has followed Nash's rise to stardom from his high school days.

A point guard is a basketball team's on-court leader, who controls the flow of a game. Kidzworld takes a look at what it takes to be a top point guard in the NBA
The Point Guard - Team Leader
A point guard's job in the NBA WNBA or any other basketball league is to be a team's on-court leader and control the flow of his team's offence. A point guard brings the ball upcourt and directs the offence to get the ball to other teammates who are in the best position to score. A point guard needs to decide when to run a fast-break and when to slow down and run a half-court offence. A good point-guard can completely turn a team around, as Jason Kidd did when he joined the New Jersey Nets in 2001. In 2004, point guard Steve Nash 's leadership at the point guard position has helped turn the Phoenix Suns into one of the most exciting teams in the NBA
NBA Point Guards - Quick Hands, Quick Wits
A team's point guard is usually smaller quick and the team's best ball handler . He must be able to make split-second descisions to dump the basketball to an open teammate who has a hot hand or look for an opening to take the ball to the hoop himself. A

Will Nash Walk? : According to the Winnepeg Sun, he just might. With the Canadian National Team coming up short in Puerto Rico, there will be no Olympic berth for those crazy canucks. So I ask you, is 10 out of 12 years of possible service enough? Should Nash take part in (meaningless) NT friendlies? Does he try to bring Canada back to the Olympics in 2008? As an aside, I hope he does. He's an all-around fascinating player to watch. Not to mention Canada's basketball savior, and only chance at qualifying.
posted by lilnemo to Olympics at 1:01 PM CST (10 comments total) Steve Nash has done as much for Basketball Canada as any one has ever done. He is our Vlade Divac, our Yao Ming, our saviour. Rick Fox, Jamaal Magloire, and Todd MacCulluch were always concerned about their contracts, workouts or partying time (though Fox is really a Canadian by birth only) - while Nash bled Red and White for a decade.
Now I love basketball, and I want my country to put out a team that reflects our love of basketball. Nash embodies Canada like no other - small but not undersized, fearless but not reckless, a hellacious competitior but a true sportsman - shaking hands and buying beers after the game. He played basketball like hockey - the body but a vessel for victory during game time, Winning more important than anything save winning justly and fairly.
He deserves a medal and absolutely no heat if this is his final appearance. No one tried harder or left it all on the floor like Nash - Captain Canuck forever.

I was hoping, as a casual Mavericks fan, that Steve would begin to suck as soon as possible. Turning the Suns into a championship contender in the first 20 games was not part of the plan. posted by rcade at 11:38 PM CST on December 15 A very fun and convincing article to be certain. Consider though that this is from a website that has the current playoff matchups listed. posted by geekyguy at 11:58 PM CST on December 15 You could make the argument that Mike D'Antoni is as responsible for the turnaround as Nash. He chose to play his best players, which resulted in the small and incredibly fast lineup that Nash directs so well.

The Phoenix Suns point guard and other NBA stars will take part in the Steve Nash Foundation Charity Classic on Friday night at the Air Canada Centre.
"I felt like it was the perfect time to do something," Nash said. "For me, the opportunity arose and why say no, why not do it, why not be proactive and have a go at it, regardless of how it turns out." Proceeds from the inaugural event will be dedicated to establishing an all-age all-access basketball centre in Toronto. "I love basketball obviously and I'd love for kids to play basketball, but for me it's most important that kids are just active and participate and are fit and healthy," Nash said. "If they play basketball and we can develop better and better players in this country and a better national team that would be ideal. "To be able to fill that void is very exciting for me," Nash said.
