    Basketball Interviews: Steve Nash
Basketball Interviews / June 2, 2005 In the 2005 NBA Playoffs , the San Antonio Spurs just eliminated the Phoenix Suns in five games. It was a Western Conference finals series. Here's what Suns basketball star Steve Nash said in post-game interviews:
    Q. Extended yourself in the second quarter, and then you looked like you struggled coming out in the third?
Steve Nash: I was a little stiff, to be honest. I couldn't get going. I felt a little constrained and just couldn't get loose again. I didn't really play well enough in the second half for us to win, so a little disappointing. But I will take my responsibility and lumps with that and, you know, try to build on it and not be too depressed.
    Q. Was that the difference in the third quarter? Struggling offensively, obviously?
Steve Nash: Yeah, I mean, we just didn't play great in the third quarter. I can't to be honest, I can't really remember at this point what happened. But they just outplayed us there and went on a couple little runs and usually we will go on ours, but we didn't really get on ours in that quarter. We just didn't play as well as them in the second half.

NBA Suspends Steve Nash for Season
By Dennis Hans / Apr. 1, 2005 MVP candidate admits to doctoring ball to increase shooting percentage. Recently resigned Mavs coach Don Nelson implicated in probe.
Steve Nash, all-star point guard for the Phoenix Suns and a candidate for NBA MVP, has been suspended for the remainder of the regular season and all of the playoffs for cheating. Commissioner David Stern will make the formal announcement Friday afternoon at NBA headquarters in New York.
Nash confessed to NBA investigators that he violated league rules by applying a foreign substance to the game ball before each free throw attempt and, when possible, before field goal attempts. He told his inquisitors that, compared to a shot with a "clean" ball, a shot with a "dabbed" ball has a steeper downward trajectory as it approaches the hoop and thus is more likely to go through it.
Nash said that prior to every game he would comb into his hair a clear, odorless substance that he bought in bulk from a Dallas-based hair stylist. So far, he has refused to identify his supplier and claims not to know the precise chemical composition of the substance, which comes in plain brown tubes devoid of a list of ingredients or any other writing. Nash did admit that the substance has a similar feel to K-Y Jelly, the doctoring agent favored by baseball pitchers who cheat.

Appreciating Steve Nash, basketball's anti-war MVP
by Derrick O'Keefe This article originally appeared in Seven Oaks Magazine
Photo: NBA Despite the fact that his Phoenix Suns – who are trailing the experienced San Antonio Spurs 3 games to 1 in the Western Conference finals – appear destined to be eliminated from the NBA Playoffs this week, Steve Nash has nevertheless put together a truly remarkable season. The Victoria-raised point guard has reached the pinnacle of the basketball world and the height of Canadian sports fame. Having already become the first player from north of America to win the Most Valuable Player award, Nash's playoff performance – especially his superlative play in eliminating his former team, the Dallas Mavericks – evoked only slightly hyperbolic comparisons to the likes of Michael Jordan and Oscar Robertson. In Canadian sports, Nash now stands alone, aided by the NHL season having been put on ice. In fact, perhaps only retired hockey star Wayne Gretzky eclipses Steve Nash's fame in Canada's sports world today. And while there are some striking parallels between these two compelling athletes, one hopes that they will end when Nash's career does. The Great One, now president and part owner of the NHL's Phoenix Coyotes, has maintained his post-career profile as a shameless corporate shill, pitching every product imaginable and never missing a shot at self-promotion. Nash, like Gretzky did during his prime, dominates his sport with unequalled play-making, passing, and vision and in spite of his lack of size and power. He also – like the hockey legend during his Edmonton years – is the centre-piece of an exciting, young, offensive-minded team. A final similarity is that Nash checks in at a playing weight well under 200 lbs. (though he's listed at a generous 195 lbs.), which can lead to rather absurd and metaphysical explanations for his greatness, while adding to his underdog mystique.

Steve Nash charity game thrills Toronto crowd
WebPosted Fri, 29 Jul 2005 22:41:17 EDT CBC Sports Steve Nash fought tremendous odds growing up in British Columbia to become the NBA's most valuable player. Now, he's trying to make that fight a little easier for Toronto's underprivileged. A young basketball player throws the ball to Phoenix Suns star Steve Nash after performing during Nash's charity basketball event in Toronto on Friday. (CP PHOTO/Adrian Wyld) That's the goal of the Steve Nash Foundation charity basketball game, which the West team won 171-149 over the East team Friday night at the Air Canada Centre. "All these great guys came up here and did a service for our community," Nash said. "We're going to look forward hopefully repeating this at some point and make it even better.

But not this year. Steve Nash of the Phoenix Suns added his name to the record books last week, becoming the first Canadian to win the NBA's most valuable player award.
The mop-topped, British Columbia native edged Miami Heat centre Shaquille O'Neal by 34 votes in one of the closest margins of victory in recent years.
"I think it is one of the greatest achievements in the history of Canadian sports," said Jay Triano, an assistant coach with the Toronto Raptors and the former Canadian national team coach.
But Canadian fans have been familiar with Nash's heroics for some time. He regularly gives up his off-season to play for his country while other Canadian NBAers decline.
Thanks largely to Nash's unmatchable energy, grit and desire, Canada catapulted back to the international basketball scene at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, making its first appearance at the Games in 12 years.
