More and more, it appears the winning formula in the NBA requires at least a serviceable big man to keep defenses honest and space the floor for teammates. Playing inside out, rather than vice versa, is why San Antonio will hang another banner this fall, Miami made monumental improvement after adding Shaquille O'Neal and, just last week, Milwaukee made Andrew Bogut the No. 1 draft choice ahead of the more promising Marvin Williams. Eddy Curry missed the playoffs due to his heart condition. (Getty Images) That's what makes this season's free-agent centers so appealing. Teams will have to weigh potential payoffs against complete disaster and gamble with their checkbooks. The top four available players in this year's crop all have huge question marks, but their potential to help turn a marginal team into a competitive one or make a good team great will get them paid. Not quite as much as O'Neal, technically a free agent himself. He's not included on the list below, because the Heat will pay him the king's ransom he rightly deserves and keep him in South Florida.

On the Shoulders Of A Giant By JEFF CHU
Posted Sunday, April 20, 2003; 14.23 BST Little boys dream big. By the time Dikembe Mutombo turned 9, he knew he wanted to be a doctor. He would work hard, study abroad and return to Congo to help his countrymen. Then the son of a schoolmaster grew up. And up. And up, to 2.2 m. Mutombo naturally spent plenty of time on the basketball court as a youth, but he arrived at Georgetown University on an academic scholarship and with instructions from his father to return home with an education. He disobeyed. During Mutombo's second year at college, legendary coach John Thompson asked him to play basketball — and launched the career of the big man described by National Basketball Association coaches and teammates as a "relentless" player with an "excellent touch" who "works his tail off every time he steps onto the floor." For all those qualities, Mutombo, 36, the star center for the New Jersey Nets and four-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year, now needs just six-and-a-half seconds on court to earn the $450 his father used to make in a year. And he is using his four-year, $68 million contract to do what his inner doctor would do: he is helping to heal his war-torn homeland.

(Or: Cleaning Up After 10 Years of Dirty Work) A drama in five acts ACT I: HE HAS NO PLANS Dikembe Mutombo lopes into the Atlanta Hawks' locker room, doffs his jacket, loosens his tie. "I'm still here," he booms. Not that anyone asked. Not so far tonight, anyway. If the New York Knicks had not shed Patrick Ewing over the summer, no one would be obsessed with Mutombo's future. But with Ewing gone and Marcus Camby thought too fragile and immature to last a full season at center in the NBA, who is more qualified to replace one Georgetown center than another? And who is more entitled to have its voids filled than a team from New York?

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. In an upgraded division, the Miami Heat and Orlando Magic present serious challenges to the returning, conference champion Sixers FOR THE LAST FIVE YEARS, ever since Shaquille O'Neal changed coasts and moved from Disney World to Disneyland, the one given about the Atlantic Division was that the preseason favorite resided in the Big Apple or South Beach. So last season's run to the NBA Finals by the Philadelphia 76ers was a major shift in the status quo. And if nothing else, NBA teams are reactive to change.

Georgetown basketball coach John Thompson convinced him to play basketball. He became an excellent college center , continuing Georgetown's tradition of producing great big men. He was a celebrated shot blocker at Georgetown, setting a team record of twelve blocked shots in a single game. Building on the shot-blocking power of Mutombo and teammate Alonzo Mourning , Georgetown fans created a "Rejection Row" section under the basket, adding a big silhouette of an outstretched hand to a banner for each shot blocked during the game. While at Georgetown, Mutombo's international background and interests stood out. Like many other Washington-area college students, he served as a summer intern, once for the U.S. Congress

From Africa Recovery, Vol.12#4 (April 1999), page 32 Mutombo's message to the youth By Djibril Diallo, Director, Division of Public Affairs, UNDP We hold the key to a better future for Africa." Those were the words of Dikembe Mutombo, the basketball star who plays for the Atlanta Hawks in the US National Basketball Association. He was speaking at the Global Meeting of Generations in Washington, DC, on 14 January where UNDP Administrator James Gustave Speth had just announced his appointment as UNDP's first Youth Emissary. Mr. Mutombo was clearly elated at being named to this unique position and did not hide his enthusiasm. He saw the appointment as an opportunity to further enhance the work he has been doing to try and better the lot of youths worldwide. The first time I saw Mr. Mutombo play was against one of the New York teams several years ago. That day, he led his team to a dazzling victory. His impressive rebounds and dunks were the clinchers that put his team ahead. I was immediately impressed at his agility and dexterity with the ball, despite his outstanding physique. He was to go on to become one of the top players ever to grace the courts of the National Basketball Association. But Mr. Mutombo's excellence on the court, I was to learn later, is only one of his many talents. A product of one of Kinshasa's most deprived neighbourhoods, where he spent most of his formative years, he made a commitment early in his career to use his success on the court to bring relief to children trapped in poverty all over the world. He was particularly concerned about children caught in desperate situations across the African continent. Contributing some of his earnings from basketball, Mr. Mutombo has already helped thousands of African children gain access to basic medical care.

Honored with USA Weekend Magazine's "Most Caring Athlete Award," NBA All-Star Dikembe Mutombo Mpolondo Mukamba Jean Jacques Mutombo of the Houston Rockets has long been dedicated to helping people in his birthplace, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). In 1997, Mutombo created the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation to improve the health, education and quality of life for the people in the DRC. One major project of the Foundation is the construction of a new 300-bed general hospital in the capital city of Kinshasa. The Dikembe Mutombo Foundation is also actively involved in assisting other relief-effort organizations in their efforts to eradicate childhood diseases in Central Africa. Having played basketball in the NBA for the better part of a decade, Mutombo spends the off-season traveling throughout Africa on behalf of the NBA, performing at free basketball clinics for as many as 2,000 children per day. He has made four Goodwill Ambassador trips in five years to Africa. In 1996, Mutombo provided uniforms and paid the expenses for the women's basketball team from the DRC so that they could participate in the Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta. Mutombo has also served as an international spokesman for CARE and is the first Youth Emissary for the United Nations Development Programme.

Giving back has always been a trademark of Mutombo ever since he entered the NBA in 1991. As spokesman for CARE, the international relief agency, Mutombo visited the Somali refugee camps in Northern Kenya in 1993 and traveled with NBA Commissioner David Stern and Georgetown colleagues Patrick Ewing and Alonzo Mourning to Cape Town and Johannesburg.
Recently, Mutombo and Hall of Famer Bob Lanier led a contingent of current and former players who served as coaches for the Basketball Without Borders Africa initiative, which took place September 6-10 in Johannesburg, South Africa. It was second year of the program and the 100 participants were selected from more than 20 countries in Africa, based on their basketball skills, leadership abilities and dedication to the sport. In addition to the on-court instruction, the program featured extensive community outreach and incorporates educational seminars addressing important social issues such as HIV/AIDS prevention and education.
Dikembe Mutombo is the first Youth Emissary for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and as an Atlanta Hawk; he was actively involved with Strong STARTS (Schools Taking Action to Reach Troubled Students). He also served as a spokesman for the Atlanta Hawks Team Up program, often visiting children at local hospitals and held a basketball clinic with on-court drills for the Georgia Special Olympic athletes.

He saves lives off of it. How many pro athletes can say that? Any? The Nets' center can. That's why on a day when fathers are being remembered, Mutombo makes for a shiny example. Mutombo has donated millions to rebuild parts of Africa. He's bankrolled medical facilities and breathed life into a country torn by starvation. His current project is the construction of a $24 million hospital in his homeland of Congo. Mutombo has put up $8½ million. He went out and solicited assistance from his NBA brethren. All but a few ignored the request. Mutombo's asked how many players have chipped in. "Four or five," he says, shaking his head.

K INSHASA, Congo - Under a searing African sun and accompanied by the thrum of a traditional dance troupe, 76ers center Dikembe Mutombo yesterday broke ground on the hospital he hopes to build in his impoverished homeland. "This is a happy day for me," said a beaming Mutombo, who had spent a chaotic week racing around Congo's capital, greeting officials, visiting health-care facilities, and handing out thousands of dollars to destitute mothers, humanitarian groups and grateful relatives. The groundbreaking ceremony was a manifestation of a dream for the 7-foot-2 NBA all-star, whose $13 million annual salary is beyond comprehension to most people in a war-ravaged country where the per capita income is barely $115. "There is not much more you can do to demonstrate your love for others as Mutombo is doing now," Dr. Mamba Mashako, Congo's minister of health, said at the ceremony, which was filled with plaudits for Mutombo, a national hero.
