Any basketball program with as much tradition as Kansas is bound to be steeped in numerical glory. Anyone who has been in Allen Fieldhouse, for instance, has seen the retired jerseys hanging high above the south windows. Many more Kansas jersey numbers have not been retired, of course, and that's what this, with special thanks to the KU sports information office, is all about. For starters, how about 00? Double zero has been worn by only two Kansas basketball players down through the years and both of them became first-round NBA draft choices. Norm Cook was the Boston Celtics' No. 1 selection in 1975 and Greg Ostertag was a first-round pick of the Utah Jazz in 1995. Ostertag, incidentally, continues to wear 00 with the Jazz. The Nets added size and depth Thursday when they signed the 7-foot-7-inch Gheorghe Muresan and the small forward Scott Burrell to one-year contracts. But their most intriguing move of the day was working out Lazaro Borrell, one of four basketball players who defected from Cuba during last month's Olympic qualifying tournament in San Juan, P.R. After running the 26-year-old Borrell through a series of agility and shooting drills, the Nets placed the rangy, 6-8 small forward on their training-camp roster and invited him to a second workout at the Champion Center on Friday. "I like him," said Nets Coach Don Casey, who conducted the workout. "I think he's a naturally skilled player by himself. Now, the next thing is to see him play with others. I'm looking forward to getting him in some organized competition." Borrell, considered the best player in Cuba, does not speak English but said through an interpreter that playing in the National Basketball Association has been a longtime dream. That is why the temptation to leave the Cuban national team on July 17 was too strong to resist. Borrell began playing on the Cuban national team when he was 16, and he averaged 20 points a game. He spent the last two years playing in a professional league in Argentina, where he averaged 29.8 points a game during the 1997-98 season and 20.8 points last season.

A great film for kids and families, My Giant has a fairytale quality with its Central European setting, castles and giant, and its warm-hearted story. Making his acting debut, Gheorghe Muresan, the seven-foot-seven Washington Wizards basketball player, is completely winning as the film's giant. Muresan not only has an unusually expressive face, but he conveys emotional range and depth with a natural ease. His eyes are infused with sadness, sensitivity, kindness and exuberance. But it's his utter guilelessness that's so disarming. Here's a man the outside world considered a freak who has found a sense of peace and self that eludes most contemporary folk. Billy Crystal came up with the story line almost 10 years ago as a result of his friendship with World Wrestling Federation Champion Andre the Giant, who died prematurely of heart failure related to his size. Crystal met Andre while making The Princess Bride and was impressed by the large man's sensitivity. While My Giant isn't about Andre, it is inspired by him and, according to Crystal, captures his spirit.
