At 7-7, Romanian center Gheorghe Muresan was one of the tallest players ever to wear an NBA uniform. He was also one of the most popular players of his era, as his friendly smile was only surpassed by his great height. Muresan's popularity led to a number of popular TV commercials, as well as a leading role in the feature film, "My Giant." More than just a pop-culture icon, however, Muresan could hoop as well. He was named 1996's Most Improved Player after averaging 14.5 points (on .584 shooting), 9.6 rebounds and 2.26 blocks in 76 games for the Bullets. All-Access recently caught up to "Ghita" when he stopped by the NBA TV studios to shoot an episode of "Basketball International." From being an instructor at Basketball Without Borders to fatherhood, Muresan talked about life away from the NBA.

Basketball.
By the Wizznutzz
As seen in McSweeney's
The Washington Wizards headed into the NBA playoffs last week as the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference. It was a remarkable accomplishment for the long-moribund franchise, a team that many have, perhaps generously, dubbed "the Clippers of the East." In 1978, the then Washington Bullets won the franchise's only NBA title. The Bullets returned to the finals the following season but were swept in four games. In the 25 years since, the franchise has only won a single postseason series. It has been a quarter century full of questionable trades, off-the-court scandals, and old-fashioned bad luck.
The 1979-80 team posts a losing record. After the season, head coach Dick Motta resigns. His replacement, Gene Shue, in a misguided effort to fire up his team and bond with the community, institutes the "slash and burn" offense in honor of D.C.'s 1968 riots. Record: 39-43. Swept in first round of playoffs.
Forward Spencer Haywood wins NBA's "Most Pensive Player" award.

Basketball is very popular in U.S. colleges. Here, center Kent Benson of Indiana U. shoots a hook shot. Basketball is a ball sport in which, under organized rules, two teams of five players each try to score points by throwing a ball through a hoop. It is primarily an indoor sport, played in a relatively small playing area, called the court. The speed and grace of the game, combined with the close proximity of the spectators to the action, make basketball an exciting spectator sport. It is one of the most popular sports in the United States , and is also popular in other parts of the world, including South America Europe Asia , and the former Soviet republics

    The Game of Basketball:
    An Overview
Basketball is a ball sport played by two teams of five players on a side. It is highly suited to viewing by spectators as an indoor sport with a relatively small court with only ten players. The ball is large and easy to follow, and the lack of protective gear makes it possible to see the reactions of players. It is one of the most popular sports in the United States and is also reasonably popular in other parts of the world such as southern Europe and in the former Soviet Union. Table of contents Basketball History
Basketball is that rare sport that was invented, largely from scratch and with rules close to its present ones, by one man. Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian, invented basketball in 1891, at a college for YMCA professionals in Springfield, Massachusetts. The first official basketball game was played there on January 20, 1892. Dr. Naismith wanted an indoor game of vigor and grace to keep young men occupied during the long New England winters. Basketball was popular from the beginning and, within a year, was being played all over the United States.
