USA Takes A World View of Basketball
NBA Commitment Key to 2008 Games
By Amy Shipley Washington Post Staff Writer Wednesday, July 27, 2005; Page E01 The attempted reconstruction of the U.S. Olympic men's basketball program began this summer over rigatoni and meatballs, pasta with Italian sausage and peppers and fried calamari. Some of the NBA's biggest stars unceremoniously ducked last year when Olympic team invitations went out, but on a Monday night this past June, many of the game's legends showed up on short notice for a brainstorming session designed to help fix the mess. Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Clyde Drexler, Chris Mullin and a host of other high-profile ex-players and coaches flocked to the third floor of Chicago's National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame to jump-start an overhaul of the U.S. men's senior national team program. The meeting came nine months after the U.S. team struggled to a bronze medal in Athens and fewer than three years after another roster of NBA players staggered to sixth place at the 2002 world championship in Indianapolis, completing a slide from dominant to dominated in a decade.

"This whole concept of a Dream Team, that's over and done with," said Phoenix Suns Chairman and CEO Jerry Colangelo, the newly named architect of the reconstruction who organized the June dinner. "The theme going forward is more about respecting the world basketball community, and it's also about redemption. We have a lot to come back from."

Per club policy, terms of the agreement were not announced. MacLeod joins Mario Elie, Keith Smart and Russell Turner on Head Coach Mike Montgomery’s staff. MacLeod arrives in Oakland with a wealth of basketball coaching experience as both a head coach and as an assistant, including over 20 years in the NBA. Having begun his NBA coaching career with the Phoenix Suns in 1973, MacLeod ranks 15th on the all-time NBA coaching win list with 707 career victories. In 18 seasons as an NBA head coach, he posted a 707-657 (.518) record. “We’re extremely pleased and fortunate to add someone the caliber of John MacLeod to our coaching staff,” said Mullin. “His impressive resume speaks for itself in terms of his success in the NBA and the experience he has gained in this league. We think he’ll make a wonderful addition to our organization and team.” Prior to joining the Warriors, MacLeod served as associate head coach for the Denver Nuggets during the 2003-04 season, when he helped guide the Nuggets to one of the biggest turnarounds in NBA history; Denver won 26 more games than the previous season and ended a eight-year playoff drought. MacLeod had originally joined the Nuggets staff as a basketball consultant in September of 2001 and moved to the bench as one of Denver’s assistant coaches in December of that same year. Before joining the Nuggets, he served as a special assistant coach for Phoenix from 1999-01.

It didn't matter that the Hawks drafted Josh Childress and Josh Smith last year and have Al Harrington under contract: Marvin Williams ' talent and potential were too much to pass up. Chris Paul might have been a better fit for a team in need of a quality point guard, but Atlanta is a few years away from winning and needs to gamble on greatness regardless of the obstacles involved. One of those might be the reaction of Harrington, who might foresee his future with Atlanta as limited with Williams on board. He'll be entering the final year of his contract, so if the Hawks find a taker, they could stockpile picks or more young talent. That's how teams rebuild. Give the Hornets an 'A' for taking Chris Paul fourth. (AP) In Salim Stoudamire , the Hawks picked up a superb shooter who must learn how to handle the ball and defend more consistently to maximize his potential. He'll have plenty of chances to learn on the job in a low-pressure situation. If he succeeds, the Hawks might have just had the night that turns around their grim fortunes.

SportsLine.com's Tony Mejia provides first-round live draft analysis for the 2005 NBA Draft. Second Round Milwaukee goes the safe route. Utilizing only the fourth No. 1 pick in its history, the franchise that once selected Lew Alcindor nets another high-profile 7-footer in Andrew Bogut, kicking off the NBA Draft. The Australian is chosen over North Carolina’s Marvin Williams, leaving Atlanta a difficult choice at No. 2 where it would have preferred to take Bogut. It seems fitting that the tough decisions begin almost immediately, as nearly every team faces toss-ups, thanks to what promises to be one of the deepest talent pools in history. As the envelopes find their way to commissioner David Stern, follow CBS SportsLine.com’s pick-by-pick analysis: 2005 NBA Draft 1. Milwaukee Bucks ANDREW BOGUT , C, UTAH: Bucks GM Larry Harris and his brain trust had a difficult decision, but made the right choice. It's tough to find 7-footers, particularly one with Bogut's upside. He's only 20, is effective with both hands and has terrific passing skills. He has succeeded on both the college and international levels and will make Milwaukee better.

Villanova pulls a shocker - 1985 By Joe Gergen For The Sporting News Courtesy Villanova University Rollie Massimino The field of teams in the 1985 Final Four was not unlike a Fab Four featuring John, Paul, George and Wayne Newton. One member of the group simply didn't fit. The sore thumb was Memphis State, the only surviving club in the NCAA Tournament not affiliated with the Big East Conference. Noting the other regional champions Georgetown, St. John's and Villanova, all Catholic institutions from the East Memphis State coach Dana Kirk claimed a victory of sorts before a shot had been fired. "We already won the non-Catholic championship of the nation," he declared. Ironically, the Tigers needed a last-second basket in the Midwest Regional semifinals to overcome Boston College, thereby depriving the Big East of a possible fourth team and a total monopoly of the Final Four. That achievement would have been all the more remarkable in a year in which the NCAA Tournament field, reflecting the skyrocketing popularity of the event, inflated to 64 teams. As it was, no conference had advanced as many as three teams to the national semifinals. That this feat was accomplished by the Big East, which had begun competition only five seasons before among schools that never had won an NCAA title, was a tribute to the vision of Big East commissioner Dave Gavitt.
