There are 98 player cards and one checklist - there are no subsets. The ruler inserts were printed on paper and folded as their size (2.5" by 9 7/8") made them far too big to fit in the wax packs in other way. They feature one real player drawn as a cartoon that is skinnier relative the guy's actual size than a Barbie doll is to the average Barbie-basher. Next to the player is a not-to-scale ruler showing the players reported height. In case you are collecting the Topps Rulers, note that there is no #5 ruler - it was never issued. The cards themselves - nicknamed "Tall Boys" - are very collectable and popular and feature a posed photo of the player with a vivid color for a background within a large oval, with the some part of the player extending beyond the border into the white border area. The white border area has four black and white drawings of basketball players - one in each corner around the player's oval. They player's name is typeset across the top of the card in red while the player's city is at the bottom - also in red. The player's position is below their name, but not always centered and whether or not they were left, right or centered seems to be pretty random (you can find cards were a player's head sticking out of the oval "forced" the position to the left or right, but others with the same amount of head protruding and the position centered above the head).

Monroe says whatever fame he found he owes to former coach Clarence (Big House) Gaines, who died Monday night at 81. When Earl Monroe played for Winston-Salem State, the fans who worshipped him there simply referred to him as "The Pearl" or "Black Jesus." Monroe, the former Knick All-Star guard and a Hall of Famer, was a legend at that historically black college in North Carolina, one of the great players to ever play for Clarence (Big House) Gaines, who died Monday night at 81 in a West Forsyth, N.C., hospital following complications from a stroke. "Bighouse" Gaines Clarence E. "Big House" Gaines, Sr. was born in Paducah, Kentucky, May 21, 1923, to Lester and Olivia Bolen Gaines. He attended the public schools of Paducah and graduated in 1941, as class salutatorian, from Paducah's Lincoln High School. He excelled academically, played basketball, was an All State football player, and played trumpet in the school band. Although he qualified academically to attend numerous colleges and universities "Jim Crow" segregation and a suggestion by the family physician (a schoolmate of legendary Morgan State University football coach, Eddie Hurt) caused young Gaines to enroll at Morgan State University in 1941. It was upon his arrival at the Baltimore, Maryland campus that Gaines received the nickname he is widely known by "Big House." According to oral accounts the school's business manager took one look at the 6 ft. 3in., 265lb Gaines and declared: "Boy, I never seen anything bigger than you but a house."

Coach Gaines was admitted to the Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC on Friday of last week suffering from heart problems, according to WSSU Athletic Department officials. He was released on Saturday afternoon but was re-admitted later that evening. Lisa Gaines McDonald, the daughter of the legendary coach, told the Associated Press last evening that her father passed away at 9:10 PM on Monday, possibly from the complications of a stroke. “Big House” Gaines was a national coaching legend at Winston-Salem State University where he led the Rams to 18 20-win seasons and guided WSSU to eight Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) titles. In 1967 he led WSSU to a 31-1 record and coached the Rams, and future NBA star, Earl “The Pearl” Monroe, to an NCAA Championship, making the Rams the first basketball program from a historically black college or university to capture an NCAA national championship. Gaines was named the CIAA’s coach of the year a record five times during his 47-year coaching career at WSSU. Over the span of those 47 seasons, Gaines compiled an overall record of 828-447, good enough to place fifth in wins in NCAA history behind Dean Smith (North Carolina), Adolph Rupp (Kentucky), Bob Knight (Texas Tech and Indiana) and Jim Phelan (Mt. R I C H The oldest, locally hosted college basketball tournament returns to the Entertainment and Sports Arena in Raleigh this week. It isn't the ACC. It's the CIAA, the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. February 27, 2002 T R I A N G L E S It's not known to most fans, but the CIAA is the conference that gave basketball the match-up zone and the transition game. It's the league that produced Earl Lloyd, (West Virginia State when it was a CIAA member) the NBA's first African-American player. It was in CIAA gyms that Earl Monroe (Winston-Salem State) became "The Pearl," where Curly Neal (Johnson C. Smith) developed a dribble that would trot him around the globe, where Sam Jones (North Carolina Central) perfected his patented bank shot and it's where Ben Wallace (Virginia Union) became the defensive and rebounding force that would help him lead the NBA in blocks and be ranked in the top three in rebounding average.
