National Basketball Association's Mr. Clutch
With another postseason of heroics to add to his resume, Reggie Miller, Indiana's sharp shooting guard joined Michael Jordan at the head of the class among great pressure performers in recent NBA history.
Miller had provided one of basketball's best dramas four years earlier, when he led the Pacers past New York at Madison Square Garden.
In 1998, Miller and the Pacers returned to the Garden for a Game 4 Conference Semifinals date with the Knicks. Once again, the results were electrifying. The upstart Knicks, a seventh-seed in this year's playoffs, were seconds away from evening up the best-of-seven series at 2-2 when Miller struck with a flash.
With New York leading 102-99, Indiana's Chris Mullin won a scramble for a loose basketball rebound and pitched it out to Mark Jackson at the top of the key. Jackson who would later say that "if I'm red-hot and Reggie's ice cold, I'd still rather have him take the shot" calmly swung the ball to a wide-open Miller behind the arc on the left wing for a game-tying three-pointer with 5.1 seconds remaining.

Miller made a franchise, city matter
    By JayNeal , Section NBA
Posted on Tue May 24, 2005 at 02:20:38 PM EST Basketball is only a game, a simple game actually. Take a ball, put it in the hoop, repeat. The game doesn't solve life's problems. The game doesn't stop a war or feed hungry children or give shelter to the homeless. It's simply a game. It shouldn't mean as much to so many people as it does. Reginald Wayne Miller is just man who could put a ball in a hoop. He shouldn't mean as much to a franchise, a city, a state as he does. He shouldn't be this important, but he is.
Last Thursday night, my favorite basketball player played his last game as an Indiana Pacer. In a valiant effort, Reggie Miller scored 27 points on 11/16 shooting, draining four three-pointers (his signature shot) in a nine point loss to the World Champion Detroit Pistons. The 39 year old marksman shot every last bullet he had left. Pacers fans like myself will remember that night as very bittersweet. Losing to your rival is nothing to be proud about, but after everything this franchise and the city of Indianapolis have been through since "The Brawl" on November 19th, Reggie didn't let us go quietly. He reminded us that he still had game. That he still could persevere through these obstacles. That he "tried". That's all we could ask from the skinny kid with the killer jump-shot and no other great skill. He tried and we loved him for it.

    We'll Miss You Reggie
    By dailytailgate , Section NBA
Posted on Thu Feb 17, 2005 at 01:47:00 PM EST After 18 distinguished season in the NBA Reggie Miller has decided to call it quits. I will always remember May 7th, 1995, we were in the midst of a championship season in Little League but the game meant nothing to me. May 7th was Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Playoffs between the Knicks and the Pacers. My dad - along with every other father - was on the sidelines busy listening to the game on the radio. Every 15 seconds, whether I was on the field or not, I was yelling to my dad for an update on the score. By the ninth inning the game was, for all intents and purposes over. The Knicks had a 105-99 lead with 18.7 seconds left and began thinking of what post-game party they were going to. Only Reggie Miller, the king of clutch, the king of bravado didn't believe it was over. In the most amazing collapse (pre-2004 Yankees, haha Yankee fans), Miller hit a three, stole the ball from Greg Anthony and hit another 3 pointer, ALL IN 3.1 SECONDS. Starks, the least clutch player in the history of the NBA (see 1994 vs. Rockets, and please don't remind me about "the dunk") missed both free throws and Patrick Ewing missed a 10 footer. Miller grabbed the rebound and was fouled, hit both free throws and started yelling "Choke artists, choke artists" to a deathly quiet crowd.

By InsideHoops.com / May 19, 2005 The Indiana Pacers and Detroit Pistons are battling in the second round of the NBA Playoffs. The Pistons have a 3-2 series lead, so the Pacers lose tonight's Game 6 in Indiana, it's likely the last time we see Reggie Miller in an NBA game, as he stated a few months ago that he's retiring after the season. InsideHoops.com scanned the web for key quotes about Reggie from newspapers in Indianapolis and elsewhere. Obviously, all quotes are credited to the newspaper/media outlet:
These are from Thursday morning, before Game 6 was played.
May 19, 2005

Indianapolis Star: The obstacles seemed insurmountable. Injuries and suspensions decimated their lineup, but still the Indiana Pacers persevered. They rallied late in a season marred by the Nov. 19 brawl with Pistons fans to finish with a winning record and secure a playoff berth. Once there, they won three road games, including the decisive Game 7, to capture their first-round series against Boston. Tonight, the Pacers need to muster all the energy they have left and effort has been an issue in their past two losses because this isn't an ordinary Game 6 against the Detroit Pistons.
Indianapolis Star: A loss not only ends the most turbulent season in franchise history when Pacers players lost 435 games to suspension and injury it also will be the curtain call on Reggie Miller's 18-year career. "Everybody has thought about that," Pacers forward Stephen Jackson said Wednesday. "He doesn't like us to think about it. He wants us to win for ourselves as much as him. It's on everybody's mind." Prolonging Miller's career won't be easy.

Miller and Malone Hang 'em Up
A double shot of farewell.
By Colin Twomey Published: Thursday, February 17, 2005 The clock begins ticking on Miller Time
I hate Reggie Miller. I hate the way he shoots, his right hand slapping the back of his left wrist like a mother reprimanding her child reaching into the cookie jar. I hate the way he looks, his freakishly skinny 6'7" frame and big ears matching the physique of a young basketball prodigy who has yet to grow into his body. I hate the way he plays, trash-talking, taunting, and flopping to his heart's content. But no matter how much I hate Reggie Miller, I can't help but respect him. In his nearly 18 seasons with the Indiana Pacers, Reggie has proven himself to be one of the best pure shooters the game has ever seen. That shot, no matter how awkward, always seems to fall. That body, no matter how unimpressive, will forever live on in the nightmares of New York Knicks fans. That style of play, no matter how detestable, has made Reggie one of the most confident and consistent players in basketball for over a decade.
In a game filled with many so-called heroes, Reggie provided basketball with a marketable villain, a superstar that was much easier to boo and despise than to cheer and love. After all, for every warm welcome received by Larry Bird or Magic Johnson there must be a chorus of jeers aimed at Charles Barkley or John Stockton. While Jordan and others seemed capable of arousing spontaneous applause even from opposing fans, no one proved defter at manufacturing boos than Reggie Miller. Players and fans alike loathed his habit of kicking out his leg as he shot and leaning into the defender, miraculously creating contact out of nowhere and drawing phantom fouls. His swagger on the court was almost unprecedented; he once bowed at center court to Chicago Bulls fans after hitting a shot to put the Pacers up by one with two seconds left. (Fittingly, the Bulls ended up winning the game on a shot by Toni Kukoc with 0.8 seconds left).

  • One thing that I wonder: Will the Hall of Fame hold John Stockton over so that he and the Mailman can go into the Hall together? It would be a sappy gesture, but it would be poetic in its own little way.

Actually....in the span of just a few hours.....two men, who will be inducted in the Basketball Hall Of Fame, retired. Combined, Karl Malone and Reggie Miller went to the NBA Finals 4 times.....losing all 4 times....and scored over 60,000 points. Malone went to the All Star game 14 times. Miller was a 5-time All Star. Back in 1987, Miller was selected with the #11 pick by the Indiana Pacers [right after Ho Grant and right before Muggsy Bogues]. Miller was actually booed by Indiana fans who wanted Steve Alford, from Indiana University’s NCAA Championship team, instead. Well, Miller is retiring from the NBA while Alford’s been the head coach at Iowa for a while now. Two years earlier, Malone was selected #13 by the Utah Jazz [right before Kenny Green and after Al Hughes]. They leave those franchises as their all-time leading scorers.
