By Wendell Maxey Jr. Feb 1, 2005, 10:41 The Oscar nominations were announced last week, and although we have to wait a few more weeks to find out who the big winners are, we already know who wins the award for "Most Dramatic NBA Team". The Portland Trailblazers easily dominate the competition in this category For the Blazers (17-25), the past week was a mixture of rumors, juvenile antics, and suspensions. And somewhere in-between the hype, basketball games were actually played. Can you believe it? Monday started with the wind blowing the old rumor mill round and round. The rumor had coach Maurice Cheeks leaving town for the nearest bread line and someone named Phil Jackson arriving in Portland to offer spiritual guidance disguised in the form of basketball fundamentals to the struggling Blazers. But rumors are the poor man’s information, so don’t believe everything you hear. Is the "Zen Master" on his way to the Rose City? I don’t think so. Jackson doesn’t hide the fact that the situation has to be just right for him to return to the game. Is Blazers owner Paul Allen’s fat pockets reason enough? Not likely. When Jackson eventually calls it a comeback, I see him taking the job with his alma mater New York Knicks instead. But it’s too late. The damage of the rumor has already been done. Just ask Mo. As if it things weren’t bad enough for the Blazers, the San Antonio Spurs (36-10) arrived on Tuesday to spread a little hometown heartache.

You know the ones - Sebastian Telfair showing off his quick hands, Travis Outlaw playing football with the kids, Darius Miles and his mom playing cards with fans, Theo Ratliff blocking swimming pool basketball shots, Derek Anderson playing Jenga, Zach Randolph and Damon Stoudamire taking on some kids at video games... I could go on and on, but I think you get the idea. The Block Party concept was created to give fans a chance to get a little closer to the players and find out they are regular people too. They like to hang out, have a BBQ, play some Jenga, hit the foosball table, talk about the newest music albums - just like everyone else.
