The Minnesota Timberwolves executive doubted that Kevin Garnett, a Chicago schoolboy who had just turned 19, was worth the attention of a special workout, worth the serious consideration of a first-round draft choice. Kevin Garnett is the Timberwolves' all-time leading scorer. Agent Eric Fleisher had organized the workout in June 1995 and invited the 13 NBA teams with the highest draft picks. The 6-foot-11 Garnett ran through a series of drills, many of which seemed better-suited for players much shorter. He thought he had failed. McHale and Minnesota general manager Flip Saunders, though, were so enamored of Garnett's skills that they made plans to take him with the fifth overall pick.
