Illinois head coach Bruce Weber did not have to find a genie to be granted this wish for Illinois. Illinois travels to Minnesota, who is 0-7 in the conference entering Wednesday, on Sunday (Noon, CBS). But this time Weber is borderline nervous about his opponent. "It's scary going to Minnesota," Weber said. "They may not have a win (in conference). They have had overtime games. It seems like they keep coming back but they don't find ways to win." Main August 05, 2003 Thank god for basketball. I Thank god for basketball. I have had a rough 48 hours. It fucking poured here yesterday. My clothes are STILL wet. Subways were all screwed up . The weather even stopped Monday Night Football. My car wouldn't start this morning so I had to have it towed to the shop. Wonderful. I was in a bad mood when I got back...I turned on NBA TV and lo and behold, life was good. Celtics v. Hawks from March 1985. This is the game where Larry Bird scored 60 points, breaking the old record he helped teammate Kevin McHale set two weeks earlier. It could have been 62 but the refs disallowed a 3 pointer he made in the waning seconds, calling the foul before the shot. Bird was unreal. Brought back some good memories. McHale lived by that motto during his Hall of Fame career with the Celtics. He has a pronounced limp to show for it. Playing with a broken left foot will do that to you. It didn't bring him a fourth NBA title, but it did earn him Boston fans' eternal thanks. Still a fan favorite, the free-spirited power forward with the impossibly long arms earned the loudest ovation of the night when he walked into the FleetCenter 23 seconds before tipoff. The ovation was nice, but the win was even better. Latrell Sprewell hit a baseline floater with 0.9 seconds to play and Ricky Davis' buzzer-beating 19-foot jumper wouldn't stay down in Minnesota's 99-97 victory, which snapped Boston's perfect 4-0 mark in the Antoine 2 Era. The 47-year-old Minnesota native and ex-University of Minnesota All-American won't forget the glory days in Boston. "It's always fun to come back to Boston," said the pride of Hibbing, which is also Bob Dylan's hometown. "I love the fans here. My best basketball memories are in this building."

I can hear them now crying "Break a leg!" when Kevin Heelan, the playwright, and Kevin Rigdon, theatrical scenery designer, open their latest shows in New York. I bet they nag Kevin Sessums, the Fanfair editor of Vanity Fair, to put their names in print. I bet they're proud that Kevin Maxwell has become publisher of The Daily News.
