PLEASE BRING MY CAKE BACK
Tip your Bowler hat to the original Lil' Flip. The Wolves were built for a short window, and that window has apparently slammed shut on their necks.
I'm saying this year's Wolves squadwith the return of Wally and the lost Neville brother, Troy Hudson, and the emergence of Eddie Griffinwas like some Ikea furniture or something. You got these pieces, the shit makes sense on paper, you think it should work, and by the end of the day you have a broken bookcase, a drinking problem and 6 extra screws. AND YOU CAN'T FIND THE ALLEN WRENCH! YAOMING?! (YO, OLOWOKANDI IS THE ALLEN WRENCH IN CASE MY METAPHORS ARE TOO FUCKING RAS KASS FOR YOU)
This team went into the season, restocked and loaded with a lineup that went 8 or 9 deep, in a Western Conference that was up for grabs for the first time this century. Flip's dismissal is sad and KG's apparent knee problems (that he is ignoring) are alarming. But perhaps most telling is the fact that in the beginning of the year, they were in the market for Jason Kidd or Shareef Abdur-Rahim, whereas now you've got this story . Now I know that sometimes the dudes at ESPN have to float shit to fill out column inches or whatever but let me just say that if this trade is consumated I am rolling up to Kevin McHale's like this man...

Getting The Point
Basketball
by Britt Robson
June 19, 1996 A couple of weeks ago, Minnesota Timberwolves personnel director Kevin McHale and Coach and General Manager Flip Saunders sent out a letter to the team's players, reminding them that each would have a specialized program to work on this summer and informing them that anything less than a spot in the playoffs would be an unacceptable conclusion to the 1996-97 season. Since the woeful Wolves have never won more than 29 out of 82 games over the course of their seven-year history (and that was more than five years ago), it's possible that more than a few players chuckled as they discovered what a relatively lofty goal had been set for them. But there are reasons to believe that the letter represents something more than the hollow rhetoric common to unsuccessful teams in the off-season.

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) The Minnesota Timberwolves were laying the groundwork for another lifeless loss when they got a jolt of energy from an unlikely source. Michael Olowokandi sparked a first-quarter rally that rejuvenated his teammates and gave the Timberwolves a badly needed 82-71 victory over the New Jersey Nets It was the first win for Timberwolves coach Kevin McHale, who fired coach and friend Flip Saunders on Saturday and watched the underachieving club lose Sunday at home to Chicago for the eighth time in nine games. Under .500 and in danger of missing the playoffs for the first time since 1996, the Timberwolves (26-27) were without injured point guard Sam Cassell and saw superstar Kevin Garnett get off to a slow start.

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) Another strong effort from Kevin Garnett assured the Minnesota Timberwolves of just their third three-game winning streak this season. Garnett scored 30 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for his league-leading 52nd double-double, leading the Timberwolves to a 102-97 triumph over the expansion Charlotte Bobcats The win avenged Minnesota's 102-84 loss at Charlotte on January 5. "(The Bobcats) came out really aggressive, just like the last time we played," Timberwolves forward Mark Madsen said. "We thought we could go down there and beat them, but they cleaned our clock." Winners of their previous two games, the Timberwolves were seeking their first three-game run since winning five straight from January 21-28. They also won five in a row from November 26-December 4.

NEWS SPORT LOCAL NEWS ... OTHER NEWS Liam McHale delights in Mayo's terrific bunch of players
With twenty years of football and basketball experience behind him, Liam McHale is a man accustomed to the ups and downs of sport. The loss of four All-Ireland senior finals still haunts him, but the sweetness of success in Connacht finals and national basketball finals remains dear - as a reminder of the good days.
In the early years men like John O'Mahony, Tommy O'Malley and Kevin McStay were the influential figures in McHale's career. Every player needs them, even the great ones. O'Mahony and O'Malley were the men on the line, honing his skills and building his confidence. McStay was his idol and the player he wanted to be.
When Kevin asked him to join the U21 management team two years ago, he couldn't refuse.
"I have always admired Kevin so much as a player that I couldn't say no," he says. "We have the same philosophy of the game. We played together for years and had an almost telepathic understanding on the field. I was delighted to come in and learn the trade from Kevin and Seamus."
As trainer of the Mayo U21s, McHale is a role-model for his players on two fronts. They still look up to him as a playing icon and they listen to him as a mentor.

January 14, 2005 KING OF PRUSSIA, Pennsylvania - He did all the dirty work underneath the basket for the Boston Celtics and starred in one the greatest college basketball games ever played. ADVERTISEMENT A blue-collar player, Ed Pinckney played six seasons (1988-94) with the Celtics and had the opportunity to play in the front court with the "Big Three" - Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, and Robert Parish. "Overall it was just a great experience," said Pinckney. "As a young player I was able to learn a lot from how they approached the game on an everyday basis. Those guys welcomed pressure and approached it in a way that made the team feel very calm. They lived to play in big games. For a young player to be able to be around them, it was unbelievable." Ironically, it was Pinckney, along with Joe Kleine, who was traded from the Sacramento Kings to Boston for current Celtics Executive Director of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge. Pinckney is most noted for starring with Villanova in the 1985 NCAA National Championship game when the Wildcats upset the heavily favored Georgetown Hoyas 66-64, which were led by Patrick Ewing.

Catching up with Kevin Gamble
May 1, 2004 SPRINGFIELD, Ill. He was a pure professional who came to play every night. ADVERTISEMENT That's exactly what the Boston Celtics received when they signed Kevin Gamble as a free agen from the CBA in 1988. "The Celtics were one team I didn't think would call, and it was very surprising when they did. I heard so much about them and all the championships and the hall of famers that were there," Gamble said. "I had some nerves going into it and did not know what to expect from those guys because they had been there and won championships before. Once I got there I learned what kind of players they were and what kind of people they were. They just wanted to win ball games and it didn't matter who was on the court as long as they won." Gamble played seven seasons with the Celtics from 1988 through 1994, averaging double figures during four of those seasons. For three consecutive seasons, from 1990-1993, Gamble played in all 82 games. "I took pride in showing up every night and strapping them up and playing," said Gamble. "I think a lot of players take a lot of pride trying to be healthy and play games at that level. Everybody has aches and pains and bumps and bruises. I learned from some of the great players with (Larry) Bird, (Kevin) McHale, and Dennis Johnson. You saw them in the training room getting worked on, but they strapped them up and went out."

We politely disagree and argue that the invitation to play power forward in Sunday's All-Star Game is the toughest one to come by. Anyone who remembers the days of Kurt Rambis will chuckle at the notion that power forward has become the NBA's glamour position. And there will always be a LeBron James or Kobe Bryant or Allen Iverson with the skills to argue otherwise. Mavericks/NBA All-Star Game
