CBS SportsLine.com wire reports
SAN ANTONIO San Antonio Spurs forward Robert Horry has agreed to a three-year deal with the NBA champions, according to reports. Advertisement Horry's agent, Robert Barr, told Houston television station KRIV and the San Antonio Express-News on Tuesday that the three-year deal would allow the Spurs the right to buy Horry out of the third year. No contract can be signed before July 22 when the free-agent signing period begins. Barr did not say how much the deal is worth. Express-News for its Wednesday editions. "For him, that's what this game is all about." He told KRIV that while Horry considered signing with the Dallas Mavericks, "Robert's love for the Spurs organization, head coach Greg Popovich and the city of San Antonio was too much for him to walk away from." Horry hit a 3-pointer in overtime to give the Spurs the victory in Game 5 of the NBA Finals with the Detroit Pistons. He averaged 10.6 points per game in the Finals.

BOB ROCK June 4, 2003. St. Anthony’s Church, Heightstown, NJ. I’m Tony Cotter, a Princeton classmate of Bob’s. I am deeply honored to have been asked by Marian Rock to say a few words about Bob. As many of you know, this is a Princeton University Class of 1959 Reunion jacket. It may look a bit over the top, but all you who have seen a Princeton Reunion, especially the Saturday afternoon P-Rade, know that this jacket symbolizes and celebrates the love and affection that generations of Princeton Alumni bear toward their alma mater, their undergraduate learning experience, the tradition, and the lifelong friendships they made. It is also symbolic of Bob Rock. Bob was a big man, but he was an even bigger human being. To many of us, he was Mr. Princeton - and a lot more. Bob is too big a subject to capture here, so I’d just like to touch on three aspects of his life: His Faith, His Family, and His Friends. Because of our mutual involvement with Princeton Class affairs (Bob has run our Reunion tent for 35 years), I have spent more time at 53 Rocky Brook Road with Bob and his family than with any other friends I have. I have been housed at "Chez Rock" 2 and 3 times a year for the last 35 years. We watched our children grow up together. My wife Twill and my daughter Sarah are here today. The rest of my family would be here too, but they are at work in Atlanta and Boston and L.A. and San Diego and couldn’t get a flight. But I can tell you that within hours of my arrival home this past Sunday with the tragic news, every one of them called to commiserate with me on our loss and to express their love and affection for Bob and his family and to tell stories about good times with Bob. My daughter Amy called again this morning from Atlanta.

by Christopher Weber It’s equally hard for writers to resist reciting Wideman’s credentials: He became an All-American forward on the basketball team at Penn. There he was named the second black Rhodes scholar ever in 1963, and the first since 1907. Wideman is the only novelist to win the prestigious PEN/Faulkner award twice; he has also won the MacArthur "genius" award. It’s an all-too-familiar story, a heartening stereotype: A kid from the ghetto makes good. "We went to the playground court to find our missing fathers. We didn’t find them, but we found a game, and the game served us as a daddy of sorts."
It should come as no surprise, then, that the first article ever written about Wideman, a profile in Life , was simply titled "The Astonishing John Edgar Wideman." Or that Salon called the young Wideman, with unintended irony, "an African-American golden boy." Or that Esquire As sensational as all this attention may be, the combination of adversity and critical acclaim places him squarely in the cult of personality in American literature, right next to such luminaries as Langston Hughes (accused by Joseph McCarthy of being a Communist) and Zora Neal Hurston (famous for her life on the road).

Former Boca Ciega player's love for basketball grows
By NANCY MORGAN Published April 24, 2005 It was the competition that first attracted Kelcey Roegiers-Jensen (Boca Ciega) to basketball. The thrill of the challenge still drives the Georgia State sophomore. Roegiers-Jensen, 20, played in all 30 games of her second season with the Panthers, starting the last 25. In the squad's final contest, the Atlantic Sun Conference championship, Roegiers-Jensen scored 14 points and was named to the A-Sun All-Tournament Team. "I first started playing when I was 7," Roegiers-Jensen said. "My dad coached a rec team at Robert's Community Center, and I was one of the first girls to play on the boys teams. "I really like the competition, and playing with the boys gave me plenty of it," she said. "Basketball keeps my attention. I tried other sports, but it was basketball that I really loved to play."

Courting trouble at The Heights
In recent years, there have been numerous cases of BC basketball players running afoul of the law
July 3, 2005 Newly cashed out of a video poker game, Boston College basketball player Akida McLain rode with a former high school teammate, Brennon Ely, to a convenience store in Penn Hills, Pa., a suburb of Pittsburgh, and bought a Gatorade with a counterfeit $20 bill. The pair then crossed a shopping mall parking lot to a Dollar Tree store, where McLain bought an inexpensive air freshener, again paying with a fake $20 bill and pocketing the change. Within days of McLain's crime in May, Sean Williams, another $40,000-a-year scholarship basketball player at BC, was charged with marijuana and liquor violations on campus, and police were investigating an incident in which another scholarship player, Jermaine Watson, leaped from a second-story window in a Brighton apartment to avoid assailants armed with guns, knives, and bats an attack Watson may have precipitated by pushing a woman during a late-night party in March. The events followed a tumultuous three-year turn at BC by Andrew Bryant, a scholarship player who became embroiled in a bloody barroom brawl, threatened to ''beat the [expletive] out" of a female student, violated a restraining order the woman secured against him, and was pistol-whipped by a convicted drug felon in a college dormitory in 2003 before the school cut its ties with him and a star teammate, Ryan Sidney, who was present at the pistol-whipping.
