RED RAIDER HEAD COACH
Bob Knight
In college basketball, the name Coach Bob Knight is synonymous with greatness and winning. Just take a glance at the Bob Knight file. The numbers and achievements that illustrate what he has done for the game of basketball are there for all to see. Everyone knew Bob Knight would get the Red Raider program back to its winning ways. Many didn't think it could be done so successfully or so quickly. In his initial season, Texas Tech went from 11th in the Big 12 Conference to a tie for third and posted a +14 victory margin (9-19 in 2000-2001 to 23-9 in 2001-2002). Texas Tech's 23 wins in that initial season represented Coach Knight's 25th season of winning 20 or more games and were Tech's most single-season victories since the 1995-1996 season. The Red Raiders also earned an NCAA Tournament berth for the 11th time in the school's 77 years of fielding basketball teams and marked the 25th time Coach Knight has taken his teams to the NCAA Tournament.

A Technical Guide for Editing Gonzo Hunter S. Thompson from the other end of the Mojo Wire By Robert Love I never drank with Hunter, nor did I do drugs with him, but I was his editor on about a dozen pieces over three decades and with three magazines. Some of these were short and pointed, like the obloquy for Richard Nixon on the occasion of his death or his review of Kitty Kelley’s loathsome book on Nancy Reagan. Two were lengthy gonzo creations for Rolling Stone . The first, “Fear and Loathing in Elko,” took the reader on a fanciful night ride through Nevada, where Hunter ran into Clarence Thomas driving two surly hookers through sheep country. “Polo Is My Life, Part I” followed the Aspen polo team to the U.S. Open at the Meadowbrook Club on Long Island, and included a long bar chat with the ghost of Averell Harriman. In the twenty-three years that we worked together, it was usually from different time zones: he was on the road, in a hotel, or writing in Woody Creek in the dead of night. I was always in New York, as steady as a pyramid, as Hunter liked to say. Our collaboration was by telephone and fax, except for the earliest days, when we relied on the so-called Mojo Wire. For the record, the Mojo Wire was Hunter’s nickname for the Xerox telecopier, a primitive, pre-FAX system that required two large spinning machines, special paper, hours of long-distance charges, and a sleep-deprived human attendant at each end. Hunter would wrap a page of finished typed copy around the Mojo Wire’s rotating drum, and hit the SEND button. At our end, the drum slowly began to turn and a needlelike device hopped around like an industrial lathe, carving out the images of Hunter’s prose while it emitted acrid little puffs of titanium dioxide. A miracle at only six minutes a page.

Weiss hired as Sonics head coach
WebPosted Mon, 18 Jul 2005 18:01:58 EDT CBC Sports Bob Weiss was nam ed head coach of the Seattle SuperSonics on Monday. Bob Weiss is all smiles on Monday upon being introduced as head coach. (AP Photo/Elaine Thompson) Terms of his three-year contract were not disclosed. Weiss, 63, replaces Nate McMillian, who, surprisingly, filled the head coaching vacancy with the Portland Trail Blazers. "I am thrilled to be named head coach of the Seattle SuperSonics and cannot wait to get started on what I'm confident will be another successful era for this franchise," said Weiss, an assistant coach with Seattle since 1994. "It's an honour to take the coaching reins at an organization I very much respect and one where I've dedicated the last 11 years of my basketball career."

Feb. 20, 1963- Basketball player. Among the preeminent talents in the National Basketball Association is the outspoken forward of the Philadelphia 76ers, Charles Barkley, whose quick and aggressive play around the basket has placed him among the league's leading rebounders and scorers since the 1986-87 season. At six feet five inches tall, Barkley is the shortest player ever to lead the NBA in rebounding. The 250 pounds packed onto his relatively stubby frame helps Barkley to overpower taller players; never has a player so heavy been able to leap as high or dribble as skillfully. "Charles Barkley is unique with his body frame, with his structure, with his jumping ability," Pat Riley, the former head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers and currently the head coach of the New York Knicks, explained to Jan Hubbard of New York News day (February 25, 1990). "The whole thing is unique, and that's why he is truly great." An extraordinarily intense competitor, Barkley plays every game as though it were his last. "A game for Charles is a passionate experience," Matt Guokas, Barkley's former head coach with the 76ers, told Mark Ribowsky for Inside Sports (June 1986). "I've never seen anyone so ferocious in wanting to prove he's better than his opponent." But Barkley's highly emotional nature and his frequently blunt comments to reporters have often made him the center of controversy.

Tuesday, July 19, 2005 Low-key Weiss no longer a 'spectator' By JOHN LEVESQUE
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER COLUMNIST I'm rooting for Bob Weiss. Just as I did in 1967. Growing up in Celtics-crazed Rhode Island in the mid-1960s, my NBA team of choice was the Philadelphia 76ers. JOSHUA TRUJILLO / P-I Bob Weiss smiles after getting his fourth opportunity to coach an NBA team. He's been on the Sonics bench since the 1994-95 season. Go figure. Like any right-thinking Rhode Islander, I usually gravitated toward Boston teams. But, in basketball, the Sixers of Wilt Chamberlain, Hal Greer and Chet Walker were it. Imagine my surprise years later when I discovered that Bob nee Bobby Weiss was a member of the 76ers team that rolled past the Cincinnati Royals (now Sacramento Kings), Celtics and San Francisco (now Golden State) Warriors to the 1967 NBA title. I can say with absolute certainty that Weiss flew under my rooting radar nearly 38 years ago.
