FALLACIES LECTURE
A Fallacy is a mistake in reasoning. The most common reason for mistakes in reasoning is allowing the emotions to affect the reasoning process. That is not to say that we should not be emotional. The emotions can provide us with premises, for example, "I love Bob," which with the premise "If I love Bob then I ought not to eat his cookies" yields the conclusion "I ought not eat his cookies." What I am saying is that once you've gotten to the reasoning process, it ought to be as cold and calculating as solving a mathematical formula. For example, to reason "Well, Bob probably won't notice," when you know he probably will notice is to commit the fallacy of wishful thinking Be careful to distinguish the fallacy of ambiguity from the fallacy of equivocation. In the latter, both senses of the word or phrase appear in the argument (or are implicit). In the former, confusion is caused by a word or phrase that is imprecise or can be interpreted in different ways. For example, once I was at a social gathering and someone introduced me to Carolyn, the mother of a three year old who is a graduate student in Philosophy. If I draw the conclusion "Wow! I sure would like to meet the kid!" I've committed the fallacy of ambiguity or, perhaps, the person making the introduction has induced me to commit the fallacy. To argue "The Bible parts are wood, then it follows that the cabin is wood. But not all composition arguments are valid. For example, "I am made up, ultimately, of basic atomic material (protons, neutrons, electrons...) and basic atomic material was formed in the big bang! billions of years ago, therefore, I am really, really, old!" is an example of the composition fallacy. Sting is way off when he observes "Russian families care for their children and (implicitly) are non-threatening and (implicitly) the Soviet Union is made up of Russian families, and therefore (implicitly) the Soviet Union is non-threatening." From that all the parts of a nation are non-threatening, it does not necessarily follow that the nation taken together is non-threatening. Nazi families cared for their children, too! So, Sting also commits the fallacy of composition.

1973-74 Topps Basketball Cards
By Patrick Mondout Topps stuck with the standard sized card format for '73-74. The cards were once again distributed in 10¢ packs of 10 cards. This year's inserts were a set of 33 team stickers, which are more valuable than you might assume considering they are just useless logos and not player photos. After several years of overly colorful basketball card sets, Topps toned it down a bit for their '73-74 set. The photography seems to be similar to past issues, with most players posed in front of walls. This may mean that Topps was originally going to give the cards the colorful airbrushed backgrounds of previous years but decided against it. While the colorful cards of the past may have been too colorful for some, these backgrounds were about as interesting as Al Capone's vault. The cards featured the team nickname at the bottom under the photograph. This was once again a slight problem since Houston and Denver both had teams called the Rockets. The Houston players got the word "Houston" printed in black letters over the net on the bottom left of the card. Not so for Denver Rockets cards which simply say "Rockets." The all-star subset cards feature action photography, but lose points for putting an unnecessary head shot of the player in a circle over the action shot.

1972-73 Topps Basketball Cards
By Patrick Mondout The picture on the right and the ones below do not do this set justice insofar as how colorful it is. They seem to have been designed by someone who grew up reading Timothy Leary's Cartoon and Coloring Book . The Super70s were colorful and I'm glad Topps was able to capture that in sets like this and the ' and ' 75 Topps baseball The standard-sized cards were sold in 10¢ wax packs of 10 cards with team sticker inserts. Cards numbered 1-176 were for NBA players and 177-264 featured the ABA. The fronts once again feature mostly posed shots with bright colored backgrounds though for the first time no part of the player extends outside the printed borders. The team nickname is printed in successively larger letters near the bottom of the card in vivid colors that differ (and sometimes clash) from the background. With two teams sharing the same nickname of 'Rockets', (the ABA's Denver franchise and the NBA's Houston), Topps had to place little boxes with the city name over the bottom right of the nickname for players from those two teams. The player's name and position is at the bottom in the white border area. The orange and blue on gray card stock backs were vertical for the first time since '69-70.

The Chicago Bulls are actually the third NBA team in Chicago, after the Packers/Zephyrs (now the Washington Wizards ) and the Stags ( ). The team began play for the season, and immediately posted the best record by an expansion team in NBA history, qualifying for the playoffs. Over the next few years, the Bulls assembled the pieces to be competitive, though they never quite reached the top. During the , the Bulls were known as a tough, defensive-minded team, built around hard-nosed defender Jerry Sloan , forwards Bob Love and Chet Walker point guard Norm Van Lier , and center Tom Boerwinkle . Nevertheless, the team only won one division title, and never made it to the Finals.

I wasn't prepared to agree with Bob Batchelor. When he e-mail me and told me about his book, which postulates that basketball has now replaced baseball as America's game, I was more than happy to review it, but I was very skeptical of his hypothesis. I still tear up every time I watch "Field of Dreams." That speech James Earl Jones gives at the end about how baseball has been the lone constant in an America that has been wiped clean and rebuilt time and time again - that movie always leaves me feeling that baseball is truly America's game. And then I read this book . . .
Basketball in America begins with Michael Jordan. Sensible enough, given that Jordan is one of the most recognizable faces on the planet. It's not just a tribute to the man, though, it's an in-depth look at how he changed basketball forever. When Jordan's Bulls defeated Magic's Lakers in the 1991 NBA Finals we witnessed, unknowingly, what Batchelor calls a "defining moment." Jordan was a player of destiny, and he seemed to have to power to stop destiny or change destiny as he saw fit. He became an icon, a true hero in a world starved for heroes. The beginning of his reign as the best athlete on the planet put the NBA on the global front page for the first time and made Nike a household name. What many people don't know is that when Nike wrote Jordan that first check for $250,000 for five years they were putting the entire future of the company in his hands. If Jordan hadn't become Michael Jordan Nike would be no more.

by Tom Stephen It wasn’t until I became a senior pastor, after 15 years of full-time youth work, that I finally understood my call in youth ministry. This revelation came at an odd time: the all-church potluck. After the obligatory fried chicken and casseroles, I instinctively began to greet people in the room. Within minutes, I felt myself drawn to the middle school guys playing poker outside on the church steps. Here was my logic: the adults were already in the church, and the middle school boys were still deciding whether they wanted to come in. I wanted to help them. When I first felt called, I didn’t realize that the greatest threat to continuing in ministry with young people was a job description and a paycheck. I was so grateful when I received my first paycheck. I couldn’t believe the church paid me for doing what I love. That gratitude, at some point, became a burden. After years of developing leadership teams, planning Sunday school, and designing mission trips, I was ready to leave youth ministry and become a senior pastor. It wasn’t because of kids, though; I’d simply grown weary of trying to fulfill the job description, yet felt obliged to because I needed the paycheck. By the time I officially left youth ministry, I vowed never to return.

Inheriting a program that had not finished higher than sixth in the league and posted only two double digit victory seasons in more than a decade, Marlin directed Sam Houston to a 22-7 record in 2000, a 16-13 mark in 2001, a 14-14 slate in 2002, a 23-7 record in 2003, a 13-15 record in 2004, and an 18-12 mark in 2005. Since Marlin took over the Bearkat program, the Bearkats have produced more non-conference intersectional victories than any other Southland Conference team. Sam Houston stands 37-33 in non-league play under Marlin. Among Marlin's non-conference victories are wins over Texas Tech, Nebraska, and Baylor (Big 12 Conference), Houston (Conference USA), Idaho State and Montana State (Big Sky Conference), Chattanooga (Southern), New Orleans (Sun Belt), Northern Illinois (Mid-American), Bradley (Missouri Valley), Norfolk State (Mid-Eastern Athletic), and Wisconsin-Milwaukee (Horizon). All of those victories have come on the road. Bob Marlin is interviewed on CBS TV during halftime

Five for 500 March 24, 2004 A quintet of Division II women's coaches have reached the 500-win mark By Kevin O'Keeffe They are as diverse as the schools they represent and the areas of the country in which they are located. They are two women and three men. They include:
    • a cancer survivor, a longtime former high school coach, a captain of her college tennis team, a football coach who tutored defensive backs and linebackers, a 29-year veteran of teaching in public schools.
Yet, they all share a trait of loyalty, living examples what the Beach Boys had in mind when they recorded "Be True To Your School." The least amount of time any one of them has been at their school is 15 years. Two have been at their schools since the 1970s 1977 and 1979. One started in 1980 and another in 1981. Some may have looked elsewhere, but all have stayed. They are the "Five for 500" ... victories, that is. A couple of them even have reached the 600-win mark.

Archive: Campus News, General News Alexander Meacham never played in a Bearcats basketball game for more than a few minutes when he played at all, yet he doesn't voice any complaints about it, and he never failed to show up. That's because he loves the game of basketball and now he wants others to learn to do things for the sheer passion of it.
Meacham, a senior majoring in communication in UC's McMicken College of Arts and Sciences well known for his seasons as a walk-on basketball player for UC from 1997-1999, is spreading his philosophy of pursuing what you love in a new book to be released this summer. Walk of a Lifetime: An Inspirational Journey from a Shattered Dream to the Cincinnati Bearcats will be published by a small hometown press, Clifton Hills Press Inc., run by College-Conservatory of Music professor Simon Anderson. The book will be geared to children ages 11-18 to tell them that stardom and fame aren't what it is all about - it's passion. Cheered by fans at UC games because he tried out for the team and made it, rather than being recruited, Meacham saw his share of lows before he came to the Bearcats. He never got a chance to play a full season of basketball in high school. A broken patella and academic problems sidelined him more than once during seasons at Seven Hills Academy, Purcell Marian and Roger Bacon high schools. "High school, oh yeah, it was probably the hardest time in my life," Meacham said.

Posted: Thursday October 14, 1999 07:09 PM AP KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Wilt Chamberlain arrived at Kansas in controversy and left in bitterness. He was a black kid from back East and much of this area was still segregated in 1955, including the Kansas City restaurant that refused to seat him after he had driven all night from Philadelphia. Three years later, one season after Kansas had lost to North Carolina in triple overtime in the NCAA title game, Kansas fans were resentful when Chamberlain gave up his senior season and joined the Harlem Globetrotters. But by then, thanks to Chamberlain, many of the segregation barriers in the Kansas City area were beginning to come down. "He was instrumental in helping to integrate public facilities around here in the late '50s," said Bob Billings, a Lawrence, Kan., businessman and former Kansas teammate.
