Bob Love Ole' Butterbean... On Top of the World - Again Suffering from severe stuttering most of his life, Bob Love went from successful Chicago Bulls superstar to a low-paid dishwasher almost overnight. But Bob refused to give up and fought back to become one of the most sought-after speakers today! About Bob Love
Born in 1942, Robert Earl Love (nicknamed Butterbean after his favorite food) grew up in poverty as one of fourteen children in rural Louisiana. As a child and throughout his early life he was unable to do what most of us take for grantedspeak properly. He had a severe stuttering problem. There were long periods which he could not speak at all, as well as times when he just stumbled his way through.
To escape from his embarrassing speech problem, Love dreamed of one day becoming a basketball star. Not having the financial resources to afford a basket or basketball, young Bob nailed a coat hanger to the side of his grandmother's house and used his imagination, and what an imagination it turned out to be. As he grew to a six-foot-eight high school senior, Bob's dreams of being a great athlete became real. He was the first player from Southern University in Louisiana to be named to the All-America Team by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. After college, Bob played for the Cincinnati Royals basketball team and was later traded to the Milwaukee Bucks and then to the Chicago Bulls.

BOB LOVE Chicago Bulls Basketball Legend
3-Time NBA All-Star Growing up poor and one of fourteen children in rural Louisiana, Bob Love had a dream to play in the NBA. Not able to afford a basket or basketball, he nailed a coat hanger to the side of his grandmother's house and used his imagination. Despite his great successes as an athlete, Love was not able to do something we all take for granted-speak. As a child he dreamed of speaking without stuttering; to overcome the long periods where he could not speak at all and not stumble over his words. Forty years later, Bob Love would realize his dream and become a professional speaker. As the greatest player ever to wear a Chicago Bulls uniform before a guy named Michael Jordan, Love scored 12,263 points in his marvelous career. A three-time NBA All-Star who averaged 23.0 points per game over eight seasons, Bob Love had his jersey retired by the Chicago Bulls on January 14, 1994. Bob Love's presentations focus on the importance of dreams and how to hold on to them. He uses vivid examples from his own life's story to teach audiences how they can overcome adversity and be motivated for success through Love's rules for the game of life:

Bob Love grew up in near poverty, with thirteen brothers and sisters in a small Louisiana town. Bob dreamed of being a professional basketball player and practiced everyday with a coat hanger hoop nailed to the side of his grandmother’s door. As a 6’8” high school senior, Bob’s basketball dream became a reality. Bob played college basketball for Southern University in Louisiana and was named to the All- American Team by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. After college, Bob played for the Cincinnati Royals, the Milwaukee Bucks, the Chicago Bulls, and the Seattle Supersonics. Despite his great success as an athlete, Bob never had an endorsement deal, and was hardly ever interviewed after games because he was unable to speak due to a stuttering problem he had since childhood. Bob dreamed of being able to speak to large audiences like his hero Martin Luther King. When his basketball career ended due to a back injury, Bob found himself jobless. It took him seven years to find a job at a Seattle Nordstrom Caf© as a dishwasher earning $4.45 an hour. He endured humiliation as customers and former players recognized him busing tables. He would hear people whisper, “Hey that’s Bob Love… he was a great basketball player…. what a shame.”

LOS ANGELES DAILY NEWS Such a passion also attracted both male star Omar Epps an overzealous Lakers supporter who jokingly describes himself as being "like Robert De Niro in that movie 'The Fan'" and leading lady Sanaa Lathan, who had never shot a hoop in her life before undergoing five months of intensive training for the movie. It also attracted noted New York Knicks fan Spike Lee, whose 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks produced the movie. But it was a long, frustrating process to get this story about two Baldwin Hills neighbors' struggle to simultaneously stay in the game and stay in love with each other to tipoff. "For me, growing up, it was all about sports," says Prince-Bythewood, a UCLA Film School graduate and track runner who has written and produced for such TV series as "A Different World," "South Central" and "Felicity." "Then, once I realized that I wanted to be a writer and a director, it was all about that.
