Luc Longley throws himself behind Ningaloo Campaign
One of Australia's most successful sportsmen, basketballer Luc Longley, has thrown his support behind the growing community campaign to stop a massive marina resort proposed for WA’s fragile Ningaloo Reef. The campaign is advocating that genuinely sustainable alternatives should be pursued. This would have a much smaller impact on the environment and tap into burgeoning ecotourism markets. Luc said, "I'll never forget my first swim with manta rays right off the beach where the massive marina and seawalls would be built at Mauds Landing. I can't believe we could be so short-sighted to even contemplate this marina. We're living in 2002, not 1987." "We still have all the options open to us in WA, choices many places lost decades ago. Why follow the mistakes made in other places? Many people overseas would be shaking their heads in disbelief that we'd even consider permitting this development. They'd give their right arm for what we have in WA."

A high school student in the early 1990s, I got a chance to know a young Luc Longley during his rookie season with the Timberwolves. He was the teams' first round draft pick (7th overall) in the 1991 Draft.
Since the Wolves drafted a center, Felton Spencer, a year earlier, Luc's selection was not popular with the fans. When Longley's hold out lasted into the beginning of the season, his popularity was damaged further. Once he signed with the team all of the boos began to fade.

Over the past few years, basketball has been one of the fastest growing sports. It's fast, exciting, fun and exhausting! You can play 'one on one' or a full court competition. All you need is a ball, a basketball hoop and backboard, a court and lots of energy. In a normal game of basketball, you have 5 players each side; 2 guards, 2 forwards and a centre. You may have heard of specialist positions such as a 'point guard'. This usually occurs is the higher levels of competition and if you're just starting out, ask your coach or teacher which position they think you might be best suited for. The aim of basketball is to get the ball down to your end of the court and shoot a basket to score points. A field shot is worth 2 points if shot within the 3 point line, and obviously worth 3 points if shot outside the 3 point line. You must bounce the ball in your journey down the court and if you stop bouncing it, you either have to pass to one of your team mates or take a shot. Most of the passes used in basketball are chest passes and bounce passes. You can't run outside the lines of the court, you have to get the ball over half way within ten seconds and once you go over half way, you can't go back. Once in your half, your team has 30 seconds in which to weave around the defence to get good positioning and shoot.

High hopes for Australia's female basketball champ

KERRY O'BRIEN: Basketball star Luc Longley may already be a household name in Australia because of his groundbreaking deeds in the American NBA, but the name Lauren Jackson should soon be equally familiar.
A veteran of nine years in the toughest competition in the world, Longley is here this week to play with Australia's Boomers, and is keen to help them win their first Olympic medal.
At just 18, Jackson is preparing for her first Olympics, but already she's being touted as potentially the greatest player in the history of women's basketball.
Olympics reporter Sean Murphy.
LUC LONGLEY: I grew up aspiring to play for the Australian Olympic team.
The NBA was never my ambition.
It was never even really very relevant to me because you couldn't get it when I was a kid.
You didn't see it.
And so, still, for that reason, you know, playing for the Boomers and for my my country is still very dear to me. SEAN MURPHY: At 218cm or 7'2", Luc Longley is the man Australia's Boomers hope can match the biggest men in world basketball. Fresh from his ninth straight season in the American NBA League, Longley is hungry to help the Boomers win their first Olympic medal.

Thursday, 24 February 2005 Presenter: Russell Woolf Perth's Luc Longley was the first Australian bred basketballer to play NBA basketball. After beginning with the Minnesota Timberwolves, he was traded to the famous Chicago Bulls on 23rd February 1994. Russell Woolf rang up Luc on the eleventh anniversary. Luc was surprised, because he'd forgotten all about the date. He remembered the time well. Turns out he knew he was going to be traded anyway, and when word came he put a message on his voicemail to the effect "call back soon 'cos I'm going to Chicago in a couple of days". It annoyed some folk. The 7'2" Luc was under no illusions under his on-court role with the Bulls. He describes how they needed a big body to set screens. "They needed somebody to get in the way, and I was good at getting in the way", says our modest hero.

    Bogut v Longley
If my memory serves me correctly Luc went at number 4 in the draft many years ago. Bogut is expected to go 4 or above, maybe (hopefully) number 1. Does anyone recall what sort of stats Luc was posting at uni of New Mexico? He must have been doing some pretty impressive things in college to go at 4 in the draft, or was he seen more as a project player waiting to blossom?
Longley's got a few inches on Bogut, but from what I can gather Bogut has achieved so much more in his 2 years at college than Luc ever did (in college). Here's hoping he can pick up at least rings in the show.

"It's not even fair to bring that name up," Bogut said yesterday. "I'm not as tall as Luc Longley, I am not as slow, I'm more athletic, I shoot a bit better, I'm more competitive."
Bogut said his game was "completely different" to Longley's.
"I'm quicker on my feet, I've got more of an arsenal of close moves, I can go outside and I can play offensive positions," the 20-year-old said.
Bogut added that Longley was not followed that much in Australia when he was playing NBA because "he wasn't an all-star or a superstar".
"Hopefully if I can be an all-star in a couple of years, it definitely will be good for Australia," Bogut said. Bogut, who has just finished two seasons with the University of Utah, also said he was better than other Australian greats like Andrew Gaze, Shane Heal and Chris Anstey, who all played NBA, and Paul Rogers who was drafted by the LA Lakers. "I think I'm much more competitive and much more of a winner than a lot of those guys," Bogut said.
