Posted at 10:03 p.m. The Sonics close out a 106-85 victory, their biggest in a home opener since a 129-101 win over the L.A. Lakers on 11/6/93. That’s a wrap from Section 214; stay tuned to SUPERSONICS.COM for Postgame Quotes and Notes later tonight. Swift Scores!
Posted at 10:02 p.m. Swift scores the first of many points in his NBA career by hitting the second of two free throws, drawing what might have been the largest applause of the night. An angry Peja Drobnjak answers with a three. Big Man for Three! Swift!
Posted at 9:58 p.m. With 2:19 left to play, Robert Swift makes his long-anticipated KeyArena debut and gets a loud round of applause from the crowd. Anthony “Pig” Miller, also checking in at the same time for the Hawks, gets a significantly quieter hand. The Sonics immediately feed the big man, whose pass to a cutting Antonio Daniels is knocked away. Swift, at 18 the fourth-youngest player in the league, briefly matches up with the 42-year-old Willis, the NBA’s oldest player. No word yet on whether Swift asked Willis what playing was like in the days before color TV.

HIS LIFE Reggie Lewis was born in 1965. Reggie was raised in a modest urban home and lived with his mother Peggy and brothers Irvin and Jon. At an early age, Reggie already acquired a love for basketball and was seldom seen outside of the court. His devotion to the game would eventually lead him to the Boston Celtics and to national fame. Now Reggie's footprints appear in the cement outside of the court that he played on as a child. In high school he played for the Dunbar Poets. His talent eventually earned him a spot at Northeastern University , where he transcended everyone's expectations as a starter for the Huskies. In Freshman year he averaged 18 points per game, by Senior year he averaged 23.3 points per game. Lewis lead his team to victory in 4 National Atlantic Conference Titles and ultimately NCAA Tournaments. In 1987 he graduated from Northeastern, not only with the highest score in New England Collegiate history but also the position as the newest rookie on the Celtics. He made the team in the first round drafts, and eventually made his way to team captain, following Larry Bird's departure. In 1993 Lewis was at the pinnacle of his career. He was averaging 21 points per game and was leading the Celtics in a great season. However, a coronary defect in his heart would lead to the premature end of his career and his life. On July 27, 1993, Lewis collapsed and eventually died while practicing in Northeastern's arena.

The Reggie Lewis Athletic Center
The Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic center is a state-of-the-art facility that marks the culmination of a project 35 years in the making. Although construction of the facility was initially approved by former Governor Michael Dukakis, it was not until 1993 when former Governor William Weld authorized the construction site at Roxbury Community College and designated RCC as the custodian of the facility with responsibility for its oversight, administration, and operation. In June 1995, the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center opened. The Center is named after the local humanitarian and basketball hero, Reggie Lewis, who played collegiate basketball for neighboring Northeastern University and professionally for the Boston Celtics. Celtics Captain Reggie Lewis was revered not only for his athletic prowess but also for his dedication and advocacy for the educational, physical, emotional and social well being of the youth within the Boston community. It is this legacy which, in great part, shapes the vision, mission, and goals of the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center. The vision for the Track and Athletic Center is to serve and embrace the multiple constituencies and the surrounding community. The vision is thoroughly imbued with the spirit of the mission and philosophy of the College with respect to promoting academic excellence; student development through athletic and physical fitness; and service to the community. As an integral component for Roxbury Community College, the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center must be truly effective in facilitating the delivery of academic programs, student development opportunities, and community health initiatives as the College pursues its mission through the Center.

After finishing last season with a 13-15 record and losing four seniors from the team Marauder Head Coach Doug Lewis knew he had to find the players that could help turn the season record around as the Marauders continued to move into the realm of NCAA Division-II Basketball.
Lincoln Bradley is another transfer to the Marauders, a 6'3" 170 lbs. swing player comes from Sacramento CC (CA). His hometown is Sacramento, CA. Also making the move to the Buckeye State from California is Geormel Benson, 6'6" 235 transfer from San Jose CC (CA) Benson was a Top 50 player in the state of California in 2003. He averaged 18 ppg along with 11 rebounds. "He's a physical and athletic player who will give us a presence in the paint. Geormel is tough as nails both mentally and physically" commented Lewis. Benson hails from Berkley, CA.
Aaron Jones, 6'7" 205 lbs. will transfer to Central State University from College of Lake County, (IL) where he was 1st team all conference averaging 13 points and 11 rebounds a game. Aaron is from Waukegan, IL
Reggie Harwell, 6'7" 205 will come back home from Midland College (TX) where he averaged 14 ppg. and 7 rebounds. In high school in Cleveland, OH Harwell was a top 20 player in the state of Ohio and 1st team All-Ohio (Division 1) while averaging 22 ppg. 7 rebounds and 7 assists. On Harwell Lewis said, "Reggie has the potential to be one of the best players to ever play ball at Central State. He has multi-dimensional skills. He can handle the ball like a point guard and has an understanding on how to play the game of basketball. He can become as good as he wants with a lot of hard work on and off the court.

The widow of Reggie Lewis, the Boston Celtics captain and NBA all-star who, in 1993, collapsed while shooting baskets at a college gym and later died, recently filed a lawsuit against doctors who treated her late husband. In the lawsuit, which was filed just months before the state's three-year statute of limitations, Donna Harris-Lewis charged that her late husband's treatment by Dr. Gilbert H. Mudge, Jr. and other cardiac specialists at Brigham and Women's Hospital was "rendered carelessly, unskillfully and negligently."

You knew you were going to lose a lot of games just because of the fact you didn't have a lot of good players. That's how it is with expansion teams. But we tried every night, gave it our all, and once in a while, we would sneak up and beat a good team. There was one game in our first year that really helped put us on the map and helped us form some kind of a positive identity. We played the Boston Celtics, and I believe it was a nationally-televised game, on February 2, 1990, at the Hubert H. Humphrey Dome in Minneapolis.

http://www-unix.oit.umass.edu/~excs597k/carpenter/sdathlete.htm
CARDIOMYOPATHY AND ITS RELATION TO EXERCISE: SUDDEN DEATH IN ATHLETES Sudden death is associated with vigorous exercise and has occurred to some professional and collegiate athletes. For example, Hank Gathers, a Loyola Marymount University basketball player collapsed on the court and died later with cardiomyopathy complications, Reggie Lewis, Boston Celtic basketball star, died of a cardio-myopathy heart attack during a pick-up basketball game, Sergei Grinkov collapsed on the ice during a practice for Stars on Ice, and Greg Menton, a University of Massachusetts swimmer and water-polo player collapsed and died at a swim meet against Dartmouth College. click here to read more about Celtics star Reggie Lewis click here to read more about Loyola Marymount University basketball star Eric "Hank" Gathers click here to read more on my teammate, Greg Menton click here to read more on Sergei Grinkov and his wife Ekaterina Gordeava Sport by its very nature includes inherent risks, including the risk of death. Death in sport is tragic. Fortunately, it is rare. It is important to be aware of the remote possibility and the need for shared responsibility for sports safety among athletes, parents, coaches, and sport organizations. A study done by Dr. Van Camp and colleagues (1995) described 160 cases of non-traumatic death in high school and college athletes between 1983 and 1993. The ratio of males to females was about 10 to 1, 146 males (average age 16.9 years) to 14 females (average age 16.2 years), and the age range was 13 to 24 years. In another study, Dr. Barry Maron and colleagues (1996) described the clinical profile of 134 athletes who had cardiovascular causes of sudden death between 1985 and 1995. The ratio of males to females was again about 10 to 1 (120 males to 14 females). The median age at death was 17 years, which means that one-half of the cases were 17 years of age or younger; the age range of the total sample was 12 to 40 years. Interestingly, the sample included 12 boys, 14 years of age or younger, who were involved in organized youth sports or junior high school sports.
