The most competitive of the four preliminary groups, Australia, Italy and the USA figured to battle for the two medal round qualifying spots. Playing its preliminary games in Larissa, Greece, the U.S. was served notice that repeating as junior world champions would be no easy feat as Australia slipped past the U.S. 71-69. Australia took a 71-69 lead after Aaron Trahair made two free throws after he was fouled with 7.8 seconds left. The USA's Stephon Marbury was fouled on a drive to the basket with 3 seconds left, and after missing his first free throw, he purposely missed the second and the ball went off an Australian giving the U.S. once last chance with 1.5 seconds to go. The U.S. alley-oop try failed and Australia had the 71-69 win. The USA's Samaki Walker turned in a strong showing, accounting for 26 points and 10 rebounds.

Even though the NBA draft has been severely depleted, there are still some great players remaining. Last year, Duke started out 11-0 in route to a Number 1 ranking. After that, the team was very inconsistent as Elton Brand missed two months of the season with a broken foot. The Blue Devils are loaded at every position. sharp shooter, Trajan Langdon is a fifth year senior who averaged almost 15 points a game last year. Another popular final four pick are the Stanford Cardinal. This Pac-10 powerhouse is the only team in the country that can rival the depth of Duke. All five starters are back from a team that reached the final four last year. Stanford has every element that is needed to be successful in March. The final team that looks like an obvious chioce to make the final four are the Connecticut Huskies. All five starters return, on a team that reached the elite 8 before being eliminated by North Carolina.

Virginia Falls to Top-Ranked Duke.
DURHAM, NC - Trajan Langdon scored 17 of his 22 points in the first half as top-ranked Duke scored the first nine points of the game and never looked back in a 103-59 pounding of Virginia in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both schools. Roshown McLeod added 11 of his 15 in the first half for the Blue Devils (8-0), who forced 22 first-half turnovers and took a 53-25 lead at halftime. Langdon finished 10-of-15 from the field. Norman Nolan scored 19 points and Curtis Staples added 16 for Virginia (4-2), which had a four-game winning streak halted. The Cavaliers fell to 0-6 against Duke when the Blue Devils are ranked number one. It was the worst loss in the Jeff Jones era for Virginia and its worst defeat since a 109-61 drubbing at the hands of Oklahoma in the Maui Invitational during the 1987-88 season. Duke, which has won four straight over Virginia, holds an 89-45 lead in the all-time series. It was the largest victory in the series by the Blue Devils since a 136-72 pounding on February 11th, 1965.

View My Guestbook Well, another college basketball season is upon us, five great months leading up to the frenzy we know as March Madness. On this page, you'll see a few things: a Top 25 with brief insights on each team, a NCAA Tournament prediction, 3 all american teams, and a group of sleepers ripe for the upset. TOP 25
  • Kansas - The past two years, Kansas has had the most talent in the country and has been unable to win it all. This year they may get it done, as two All-Americans, in Paul Pierce and Raef Lafrentz return. A lot of hope has been placed in Lester Earl, a midseason transfer from LSU. Jacque Vaughn is gone but Ryan Robertson will fill in admirably, although he can't hope to be as good as Vaughn. Duke Although on their own, neither Trajan Langdon or Steve Wojciechowski is spectactular, together they form a deadly tandem which will be tough to stop. A great deal rides on the recruits, especially Burgess, Brand, and Battier. These three should lead the inside game which will determine how far Duke goes, the backcourt is a given. Arizona - You know Arizona's loaded for a repeat when their leading scorer isn't even one of the top three returners. Miles Simon, Mike Bibby, Micheael Dickerson, and company are back and better than last year. But like Arkansas, UCLA, and Kentucky know, everyone will be shooting for them, making it tough to repeat.
