Because the seasons are reversed in Australia, the 1956 summer Olympics were held during the USA's winter time. The Australian government poured a then unthinkable sum of $13,440,000 into the Olympics, at that time the highest amount ever spent for the Games.

The United States averaged nearly 100 points a game, actually surpassing the century mark in four of eight games, and the USA's average margin of victory was an impressive 53.5 points a game. Arriving in Melbourne November 15, the USA opened the Olympic competition with a dominating 98-40 win over Japan as Russell poured in 20 points. Background - Boston Celtics
One of the most successful and celebrated franchises in professional sports, the Celtics have captured 16 NBA championships since their founding in 1946. From 1959 through 1966, they won eight titles to establish the longest streak of consecutive championships in United States sports history. The Celtics have faced the Los Angeles Lakers ten times in the NBA Finals, establishing one of the best-known rivalries in professional basketball.
Under coach Red Auerbach, Celtic lineups featured early NBA greats such as guards Bob Cousy, K.C. Jones, Sam Jones, and Bill Sharman; forwards John Havlicek and Frank Ramsey; and center Bill Russell. Coach Tommy Heinsohn led the franchise to two more titles in 1974 and 1976 with a lineup featuring center Dave Cowens, forward Paul Silas, and guard Jo Jo White.

But realistically, the players who left college before the formation of the American Basketball League and American Basketball Association in the 1960s had two three options: The National Basketball League, the Eastern League or AAU basketball. AAU basketball was attractive to many players for two important reasons, first, for those who wished to remain eligible for the Olympics, they were able to maintain their amateur status. Second, for players looking to earn a living, many teams were sponsored by corporations which provided jobs to the players on their teams. Top players who played AAU basketball at one point in their career include Ace Gruenig, Jack McCracken, Bob Kurland, Clyde Lovellette, Jim Pollard, Don Barksdale, Richie Guerin, Andy Phillip, Burdie Haldorson, Hank Luisetti, Kenny Sailors, Vince Boryla, Burdie Haldorson, Cazzie Russell, K.C. And although some never went on to play in the professional leagues, they were among the top players of the era. DENVER AAU BASKETBALL HISTORY 1935 - 1968

By George Edmonston Jr. Forty-eight years have passed, and the sound of a leather ball clanging iron can still be heard. Well, not really, for no one that Saturday night in 1955 could hear anything. The record-setting Gill Coliseum crowd of over 11,200 was screaming loud enough to trigger a blip on a seismograph machine. The crowd was watching the last 13 seconds of a struggle of historic proportions. Whoever "hears" the clang today does so symbolically, in a lasting testament to what is remembered as the greatest might-have-been, could-have-been, should-have-been basketball game ever played by an Orange and Black men’s quintet. Observing every play are head coach Slats Gill and Freshman coach Paul Valenti. Photo from the

Missouri Southern Women's Basketball Coaching Staff Maryann Mitts, Head Women's Basketball Coach Maryann Mitts, the eighth head coach in Missouri Southern women's basketball history, is beginning her fourth season at the helm of the Lions. Mitts holds a record of 51-35 (.593) at Missouri Southern and 134-92 (.593) in eight years as a collegiate mentor. Mitts has the Lions headed in the right direction, as her 2003-04 squad turned in the best season at MSSU since 1995-96. Southern went 19-9 in '03-04 and made the program's fourth straight berth in the MIAA postseason tournament. What's more, the Lions reeled off a 7-1 February, knocking off three nationally-ranked teams in the process, and Mitts received national consideration as Division II Bulletin Coach of the Month. Mitts' squads have also been successful in the classroom. Her 2001-02 Lions were ranked ninth in the nation by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's Academic Top 25. That year, Southern finished with a 3.434 GPA, a figure that placed the highest among all Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association teams. Additionally, Mitts' 1998-99 squad was No. 1 in the nation academically in NCAA Division II, and her 1999-2000 Lady Hawks were 13th. While the assistant at Rockhurst, Mitts also initiated and directed the men's and women's tennis teams. In three seasons, she led her team to a 41-14 record and two national tournament appearances. She was also named Midwest Region Coach of the Year in 1995 and 1996.
