Return to What's Up
The greatest basketball player to ever lead a New Mexico team did not attend any of the state's high schools or universities. He played on the White Sands Missile Range (then proving ground) team in 1955 and 1956. His name is Sam Jones and last year he was named one of the 50 greatest players in the history of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Jones was born in 1933 in Laurinburg, N.C. He played high school ball in Durham, N.C. where he was selected to the All-American high school team in 1951. He then attended North Carolina Central College. He was relatively unknown on the national scene but did captain the basketball team for two years and was voted its "most valuable player." In September 1954 Jones entered the Army and took basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C. He then attended the Pole Lineman's school at Camp Gordon, Georgia.

Feb. 20, 1963- Basketball player. Among the preeminent talents in the National Basketball Association is the outspoken forward of the Philadelphia 76ers, Charles Barkley, whose quick and aggressive play around the basket has placed him among the league's leading rebounders and scorers since the 1986-87 season. At six feet five inches tall, Barkley is the shortest player ever to lead the NBA in rebounding. The 250 pounds packed onto his relatively stubby frame helps Barkley to overpower taller players; never has a player so heavy been able to leap as high or dribble as skillfully. "Charles Barkley is unique with his body frame, with his structure, with his jumping ability," Pat Riley, the former head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers and currently the head coach of the New York Knicks, explained to Jan Hubbard of New York News day (February 25, 1990). "The whole thing is unique, and that's why he is truly great." An extraordinarily intense competitor, Barkley plays every game as though it were his last. "A game for Charles is a passionate experience," Matt Guokas, Barkley's former head coach with the 76ers, told Mark Ribowsky for Inside Sports (June 1986). "I've never seen anyone so ferocious in wanting to prove he's better than his opponent." But Barkley's highly emotional nature and his frequently blunt comments to reporters have often made him the center of controversy.

In the history of the National Basketball Association, only three coachesRed Auerbach of the dynastic Boston Celtics, Pat Riley of the fabulous Los Angeles Lakers, and Chuck Daly of the swaggering Detroit Piston "Bad Boys"have led their teams to back-to-back championships. If the Larry Bird-led Celtics provided the NBA with a chord-crunching rock-'n'-roll soundtrack in the 1980s and the gifted Lakers were its soul music, then the Bad Boy Pistonsaggressive, menacing, and physically intimidatingwere the league's rap attack. One of basketball's most respected and well-liked coaches, Chuck Daly reached the pinnacle of his profession after more than thirty years of toil, starting out as a lowly $3,600-a-year high school coach in rural Pennsylvania. "People in our business were genuinely happy for Chuck," Ron Rothstein, a former assistant of Daly's, has said. "He worked his way to the top, from high school to college to here. Nobody ever handed Chuck anything." The dapper and fashion-conscious Daly exudes what one writer has called "an easy one-of-the-boys conviviality." "It may have taken a long time," Jack McCallum wrote in Sports Illustrated (December 18, 1989), "but the coach with all those suits and all that hair has proved to be a man of style and a man of substance. And how many men like that are there?"

Jones and his University of San Francisco teammates rode a defensive train all the way to the 1955 NCAA title
ON THE EVE OF THE 1955 NCAA tournament title game in Kansas City, we had just finished our pregame meal when coach Phil Woolpert began to go over the scouting report.
The word on the street was La Salle was going to beat us by 900 points, that the University of San Francisco had a better chance of being struck by lightning on a sunny day. La Salle had won the title the previous two seasons and, with three-time All-American Tom Gola leading the way, they were going to slaughter us, so everyone said.
But coach Woolpert, as always, had done his homework. He knew what made La Salle tick, inside and out. And with that in mind, he turned to me and said, "You're going to guard Gola."

B ill Russell, NBA Basketball Sta r
Born Feb. 12, 1934, in Monroe, Louisiana American basketball player regarded in his day as the greatest defensive centre in the history of the game. He set standards by which other exceptionally tall players were judged (his height was 6 feet 10 inches). On April 18, 1966, he became the first black coach of a major professional sports team (the Boston Celtics) in the United States.
Reared in Oakland, Calif., Russell led the University of San Francisco to National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) championships in two consecutive seasons (195455 and 195556). After playing on the U.S. team that won the 1956 Olympic basketball gold medal in Melbourne, he joined the Boston Celtics of the National Basketball Association (NBA). With Russell at centre, the Celtics won 11 NBA championships in 13 seasons. He coached the last two of those championship teams but retired as coach in 1969.

Jones' coaching women's team is step to prove league is serious
OPINION: Fans can watch solid performances, not flashy shows like NBA Why in the world would K.C. Jones, a Hall of Famer and owner of 12 NBA championship rings, want to coach the New England Blizzard of the women's American Basketball League? After all, as head man of the Boston Celtics he coached Larry Bird and company to two titles and accumulated the all-time best winning percentage in professional basketball's most storied franchise. Is it the possibility of coaching another Bird, such as Kate Starbird, who recently signed with the league after winning the 1997 Naismith Award in her final year at Stanford? Probably not. Is it the money? Considering the fact that Rick Pitino will earn $70 million with the Celtics over the next 10 years, we can safely rule that possibility out. Maybe Jones is an extremely gender-conscious individual. It's more likely, however, that he's doing it because he loves basketball and he loves coaching. There aren't many dunks, and there probably will never come a time when there are several thousand screaming fans at every game. But there will be solid, fundamental basketball. There will be strategy, hustle and players coming off of perfect screens for jump shots.

Russell was proud, fierce warrior

"It wasn't a matter of Wilt versus Russell with Bill. He would let Wilt score 50 if we won. The thing that was most important to him was championships, rings and winning," says former teammate John Havlicek about Bill Russell on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. They were pro basketball's most dominant team. Never mind "three-peats." The Boston Celtics of the fifties and sixties pulled off an "eight-peat." The Celtics had Cousy and Sharman and Havlicek. They had the Joneses K.C. and Sam. But only one star was there for all 11 titles from 1957 to 1969. Bill Russell the prototypical defensive center was a champion from his rookie season until his last game in his last Final. Before he arrived, the Celtics had never won an NBA title. Five times the 6-foot-9½ Russell was voted MVP. Four times he was the league's leading rebounder. He played in every All-Star Game after his rookie year. His 21,620 rebounds (22.5 per game) are second all-time to Wilt Chamberlain's 23,924 (22.9 average). Relying on his left-handed hook shot, Russell averaged 15.1 points in 963 regular-season games. He probably would have led the league in blocked shots several years, but that stat wasn't kept then. He was complex, introspective, enigmatic, principled, aloof. His refusal to sign autographs during his playing days was legendary. "You owe the public the same thing it owes you," he said. "Nothing."
