NOT TO ROOT AGAINST THE AMERICAN OLYMPIC BASKETBALL TEAM . . .
But their recent loss to Puerto Rico is one of the reasons why I think that the college basketball players ought to be brought back. It is perfectly obvious that for the current Dream Team, representing the United States is, at best, a chore. For amateurs, it would be an honor. Of course, it need not be the case that professionals would take no pride in representing the United States. Magic Johnson, Larry Bird and Michael Jordanamong othersrepresented us splendidly. The difference however is that the aforementioned three giants of basketball were primarily winners, competitors and champions whose fame and fortunes were side effects of their prowess on the basketball courta side effect that was secondary to the object of winning games, championships and Olympic Gold Medals. Whereas so many members of the current Dream Team could not care less about developing their basketball prowess, and simply view the opportunity to represent their country as another way to gain endorsements. Winning, for the current Dream Team, is a side effect that is secondary to fame and fortune. I don't want these people representing me. Bring back the amateurs. Bring back the college players. They know that the name on the front is more important than the name on the back.

The heart and soul of a champion: his life, his career, his game. To understand basketball, you have to understand Larry Bird. Arguably the greatest all-around player the game has ever known, he led the Boston Celtics from the basement to three world championships, collecting three NBA Most Valuable Player awards along the way. Bird Watching: On Playing and Coaching the Game I Love by Larry Bird with Jackie McMullin "On August 18, 1992, I announced my retirement from the Boston Celtics. It was one of the happiest days of my life." Larry Bird takes us through his unique world. He tells us for the first time what really happened in "Celtics Land" after he retired and why he chose Indiana for his first coaching job. He shares a last look back at the Celtics dynasty, at Robert Parish and Bill Walton, at Kevin McHale and Dennis Johnson. He describes his last duels with Magic Johnson and with Michael Jordan, as well as his experience playing on the great 1992 Olympic team...knowing that it was the last time he would be sharing a court with them.

Men's Basketball Archive April 14, 2005 Johnson officially signs letter of intent to play at Long Beach St. 2005 All-State guard Kejuan Johnson made his college selection for next year official today. He signed his national letter of intent to join Long Beach State University in front of family and friends at a signing party in the LBCC Hall of Champions Gym on Wednesday. Johnson was joined by the LBCC coaching staff and team, men's athletic director Larry Reisbig, as well as his mother Sheila and aunt Pamela. "I'm excited to move on," Johnson said. "We have some pretty good players coming in for next season. Hopefully we can start a new tradition of winning there." Johnson will suit up for Larry Reynolds next season, who returns for his fourth year at Long Beach State. "Kejuan has won at every level he has played at," said Reynolds. "He is a proven winner and we hope he continues that record at Long Beach State. He is a big point guard that can score and he will be a welcome addition to our program." Johnson helped lead the Vikings to a South Coast Conference South Division championship in 2005. This past year, he averaged 20.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 2.8 steals per game and was selected SCC South Division MVP.

and Casey Morse '00 Earvin Johnson didn't give a lecture last Thursday at Cornell. Instead, the basketball legend, AIDS activist and businessman gave some memories to a largely student audience of 2,000 who packed Bailey Hall and gave him a standing ovation when he entered. Sure, "Magic" Johnson helped the Los Angeles Lakers to five National Basketball Association championships and nine NBA finals appearances. Going one-on-one against the Isaiah Thomases, Moses Malones, Charles Barkleys, Larry Birds and Michael Jordans of his era, Johnson set a high standard of athletic excellence. But on Nov. 7, 1991, the high-flying, championship world of Magic seemed to come crashing down. "That was the hardest day of my life," Johnson told the sold-out Bailey Hall crowd Thursday evening. His doctor had summoned him to his office to give him some chilling news: Johnson had been diagnosed as being HIV positive. "After I got myself off the ground, I decided to get a positive attitude. There would be no stress in my life, I would take the medicine and do what the doctor told me to do," recalled Johnson.

For six years in Dallas, Steve Nash, Dirk Nowitzki and Michael Finley lived and laughed, hugged and cried, won and lost. And they did it all together. Tonight, Mr. Nash will be in that purple-and-orange Phoenix Suns uniform. Two of his best buddies, Mr. Nowitzki and Mr. Finley, will be visiting America West Arena in Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals series. Emotions will tug at all of them. These are friends who created great memories not only for fans, but also for themselves. Whether it was on the basketball court, enjoying the nightlife or merely hanging with one another doing what young people do, the Big Three personified the Dallas Mavericks for more than half a decade. Pacers' fourth-quarter spurt leads to victory over Wizards Apr. 3, 2005
SportsLine.com wire reports
WASHINGTON The Indiana Pacers needed a late surge to keep their momentum going. Stephen Jackson and Anthony Johnson each scored 15 points to lead the Pacers to a 79-76 victory over the Washington Wizards on Sunday afternoon. The Pacers made three treys during a big 16-2 run in the fourth. Johnson capped the spurt with four free throws to make it 77-71, but Larry Hughes pulled the Wizards to 77-73 on a breakaway dunk with 1:05 remaining. Nonetheless, Indiana was able to hold off the rally for its third consecutive win and seventh in the last 10 games. "I think the first team that showed a sign of energy was going to win that game," said Jackson, who savored the victory despite shooting 0-for-9 from 3-point range. "We knew we had to make the first run and keep it, and we were able to do that." Washington cut the lead to 77-74 when Damone Brown made the first of two free throws with 36.7 seconds left.

With an ordinary soccer ball, Naismith assembled his class of 18 young men, appointed captains of two nine-player teams, and introduced them to the game of Basket Ball (then two words). Naismith, who had outlined 13 original rules, dispatched the school janitor to find two boxes to be fastened to the balcony railing at opposite sides of the gymnasium, where they would serve as goals. The school janitor, however, only found two half-bushel peach baskets, and the game was played with these.
