Career Statistics Other Resources Johnson played just two years of basketball at Michigan State University, leading the school to the NCAA championship in 1979, when he was named outstanding tournament player and a first-team All-American at guard. He averaged 17.1 points per game in his collegiate career. The 6-foot-9, 225-pound Johnson was a charismatic figure on and off court. His remarkable all-around basketball skills, combined with his infectious smile and enthusiasm, made him one of the best-known professional athletes of his time. He was chosen by the Los Angeles Lakers in the first round of the 1979 NBA draft and was named to the league's all-rookie team in 1980, when he helped lead the Lakers to an NBA championship. After missing much of the 1980-81 season with a knee injury, Johnson played for four more championship teams, in 1982, 1985, 1987, and 1988, and he was named the league's most valuable player in 1987, 1989, and 1990. Johnson led the league in assists per game four times, with 10.5 in 1982-83, 13.1 in 1983-84, 12.6 in 1985-86, and 12.2 in 1986-87, and he set a record for most career assists, since broken by John Stockton. He also led in steals with 3.43 per game in 1980-81 and 2.67 in 1981-82. Unlike most guards with high assist totals, however, Johnson was also a prolific scorer, four times averaging more than 20 points a game.

Johnson to Join Calypte's Board of Directors and to Actively Promote Awareness of Calypte's Urine-Based HIV Screening Test Today, the Magic Johnson Foundation, Inc. (http://www.magicjohnson.org) and Calypte Biomedical Corporation, in a joint effort, announced that Earvin "Magic" Johnson will join Calypte's Board of Directors, and that he will also play an active role in promoting global awareness of Calypte's FDA-approved HIV-1 antibody tests for use with urine samples. Earvin "Magic" Johnson stated: "At the Magic Johnson Foundation our focus is on supporting community-based organizations and developing programs that serve the health, educational and social needs of those residing in inner-city communities. In addition, over the past twelve years, the Foundation has made a strong commitment to raise awareness about several health and social concerns that threaten under-served communities. "My decision to join the board of Calypte represents a continuation of this commitment. When I first heard of a test for the AIDS virus that uses urine samples, I was amazed and wondered why more people didn't know about it. I believe that the fear of a blood test is one of the biggest reasons why more people don't get tested. Now, with Calypte's urine test, there are no more excuses," Johnson added.

Earvin Magic Johnson (born August 14, 1959 in Lansing, Michigan) is an American professional basketball star who played for the Los Angeles Lakers during the 1980s. Playing point guard for this team, they won five NBA championships (1980, 1982, 1985, 1987 and 1988). He also led Michigan State University to the NCAA title in 1979. Johnson is also the only NBA rookie to win the NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Award (1980). He is one of only four players to win an NCAA and NBA Championship in consecutive years. Johnson earned his nickname of Magic in high school, both for his flamboyant passing style and winning ways. While not known as an exceptional scorer, Magic excelled in all facets of the game. In different periods in his career, he led the league in assists and steals. He led the Lakers in scoring three times (1987, 1989, 1990), in rebounding twice (1982, 1983. His unselfish playmaking and dazzling no-look passes on the fast break ushered in the Showtime era of Laker basketball in the 80s.
